@@reddragonready True. But please remember, this is wartime, many that escaped could have been Spies, the number one factor was to keep the USA safe and free from the fighting coming here. Times were very different then, you couldn't simply jump on the internet to Vet someone, even making overseas phone calls was very difficult. Can't say I agree or disagree with the decision, but I do know we were kept safe, and helped keep other countries safe. The US accepted more immigrants and most Jewish than any other country during this time, and sadly turned away thousands and thousands.

My uncle was the most recent, from Mexico City, but my mother’s family came from Germany via Canada. Three brothers going through the immigration lines to end up with three different spellings of the same last name 🇺🇸⚓️🇺🇸 back in 1910. My grandmother was born in Detroit in 1911. Both integrated and relinquished citizenship to any other country. However I think that my uncle did it a tad differently by making sure that his kids (and cousins) had Spanish in the home just as much as English. My grandparents parents said we in America now speak only English. And I didn’t really think I missed out on anything until I had children of my own and could not pass on to them the German language.

You had to prove you did not have a communicable disease. There were no other tests or limits to who could come. If you could afford the boat fare, you came. If you weren't sick, you stayed. @terri24943 ай бұрын
I second the recommendation of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”. A little background on the song: Neil wrote it and released it as a solo. Barbra then did a cover version. A DJ spliced the two versions together and played it on the radio and people loved it. Neil and Barbra, who went to the same high school and were in choir together, then recorded it as duet. Neil had a busy schedule and I don’t think he usually went to awards shows. Barbra developed severe stage fright early in her career and for 27 years she rarely performed in public. At the 1980 Grammy Awards there was a commercial break and then a few moments of silence. Without an announcement, two figures emerged from opposite sides of the stage, walking towards each other and into the light. It was a total surprise, and when the audience realized it was Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand they went nuts. That’s the performance to watch.

This video is from the movie The Jazz Singer (the 1980 remake). Neil Diamond is playing a singer who chooses to become a pop singer rather than become the cantor (the singer who leads the Jewish religious services) that his father wants him to be.

I was soooooooo lucky I listened to Neil Diamond as a kid. He was one of my favorite artists then and still is. But even more I was soooooooo lucky I've seen him in concert twice! One time was in a small college auditorium I was only like 20 rows away. This is one of my favorites. My first time listening to 'Black Pegasus' really enjoyed.

This is from The Jazz Singer. Came out in 78 or 79??? My high school dance troupe used many songs from the album for our ballets. I know every beat and note of this album by heart 😅 Neil is known for his sparkly shirt!!!!❤❤❤ He has a huge catalog of great music 🎶

This is old school rock. My girlfriend first saw Neil Diamond in the early 70's. Before all the KZbin extras, it was still a powerful, popular song.

Saw Neil in concert many, many years ago and he was phenomenal!!! He sang this song and we were all on our feet clapping and screaming. The movie is great, even though the critics blasted it because of his acting. I thought he did pretty damn good considering he'd never acted in his life.

Neil Diamond is a true classic. He sang with Barbra Streisand - You Don't Bring Me Flowers. I know how you feel about Barbra so it's fitting that you react to that duet soon. Keep digging up the classics though. I am enjoying you experiencing them all!

Watch the 1980 Grammy Awards performance. It was a complete surprise to the audience when they walked out on stage.

Trivia - Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand went to the same high school and sang in its choir, I think they were a couple of years apart so they were not in the choir at the same time.
@terri24943 ай бұрын
@@justwondering5651 From what I’ve read multiple places on the internet (which is never wrong, you know) they were in choir together. I don’t know if they were in the same class but they were both there together for at least one year.

Neil recorded YOU DON’T BRING ME FLOWERS and so did Barbra Streisand, both had big hits with it. Some DJ got the great idea to do a mix of them both singing the song. An even bigger hit, I believe they actually performed it together. A must hear for you.

The lady looking at the old Jewish man is Lucy Arnez ( Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez's daughter) and the man is Sir Laurence Olivier. As many have said this is a. Remake of Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer.

this is about what made America amazing and real. Real immigrants who put their previous lives aside and started anew here as American Citizens, who took the risk, who paid the price, who are proud to say they are Americans. God bless America and it's people.

This is from the film The Jazz Singer. The guy in the audience wearing the yarmulke plays his father (I think it was Sir Lawrence Olivier). Neil Diamond is a prolific songwriter. He wrote this and 90% of the songs he performed. You should check out Brother Love's Salvation Show (the BBC version is excellent because it has a spoken intro by Neil that's very relevant to how he came to write the song). He's a Jewish boy from New York who was on a spiritual journey which you can see in his music, particularly in the Jonathan Livingston Seagull album. He can also do country! In the Hot August Night concert he performed a couple, including You're So Sweet (Horseflies Keep Hanging 'Round Your Face!). He was hospitalized after that concert for exhaustion and dehydration. There is a concert album with is a must listen. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. He put on one hell of a show.
