As a legal immigrant, I tear up when I hear this song. Neil Diamond is singing about oppressed people throughout the 20th century leaving their countries with nothing and coming to America for the American dream for themselves and their children. They assimilate, become Americans, and they love their new country. The United States of America!

My uncle was the most recent, from Mexico City, but my mother’s family came from Germany via Canada. Three brothers going through the immigration lines to end up with three different spellings of the same last name 🇺🇸⚓️🇺🇸 back in 1910. My grandmother was born in Detroit in 1911. Both integrated and relinquished citizenship to any other country. However I think that my uncle did it a tad differently by making sure that his kids (and cousins) had Spanish in the home just as much as English. My grandparents parents said we in America now speak only English. And I didn’t really think I missed out on anything until I had children of my own and could not pass on to them the German language.

@@reddragonready True. But please remember, this is wartime, many that escaped could have been Spies, the number one factor was to keep the USA safe and free from the fighting coming here. Times were very different then, you couldn't simply jump on the internet to Vet someone, even making overseas phone calls was very difficult. Can't say I agree or disagree with the decision, but I do know we were kept safe, and helped keep other countries safe. The US accepted more immigrants and most Jewish than any other country during this time, and sadly turned away thousands and thousands.

You had to prove you did not have a communicable disease. There were no other tests or limits to who could come. If you could afford the boat fare, you came. If you weren't sick, you stayed. Remember, those immigrants were the grandparents and great grandparents (or earlier) of the people who are now saying we need to keep "feriners" out.

@terri249418 күн бұрын
I second the recommendation of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”. A little background on the song: Neil wrote it and released it as a solo. Barbra then did a cover version. A DJ spliced the two versions together and played it on the radio and people loved it. Neil and Barbra, who went to the same high school and were in choir together, then recorded it as duet. Neil had a busy schedule and I don’t think he usually went to awards shows. Barbra developed severe stage fright early in her career and for 27 years she rarely performed in public. At the 1980 Grammy Awards there was a commercial break and then a few moments of silence. Without an announcement, two figures emerged from opposite sides of the stage, walking towards each other and into the light. It was a total surprise, and when the audience realized it was Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand they went nuts. That’s the performance to watch.

Short story I am old now 68 and I’ve always been a rock and roll or r an b girl. Well my brother in law made me go to a Neil diamond concert….can I say I was BLOWN AWAY AND BECAME A BIG FAN OF HIS! That was his parents in the crowd they kept showing.

Actually it was his girlfriend (wife?) and his dad, played by Lucie Arnaz (daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) and Sir Laurence Olivier.

This entire album kicks butt…”The Jazz Singer” this song always gives me goosebumps. Neil Diamond remains the best concert I’ve ever been to.

There were 2 groups my friends and I would drive around and belt out their tunes when we were in college. They were Neil Diamond and John Denver! Oh those were great days!!

my ancestors came here in the 17th century from England and fought in the Revolutionary War for the 1st fight of freedom from the oppressive King of England....they'd be rolling around in their graves now.

Yes they would be. Big difference between legal immigrants and illegal aliens. Obama deliberately muddied the waters by calling illegals immigrants when they aren't. (Let's see if the algorithm blocks this reply.)

This is a remake of The Jazz Singer. The woman they keep panning to is Lucie Arnez, the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez. The man sitting next to her is Sir Laurence Olivier. He played Neil Diamond’s father and she is Neil’s sister in the movie.

I have been to a lot of concerts, but Neal Diamond was maybe the most fun. People were standing the whole time, dancing, singing, laughing. Sooooooo much fun. He is a legend and has so many great songs. Great reaction

I took my mom in law to see him! We had the worst seats ive ever had foa concert but she was thrilled! Neil put on a wonderful show in his sparkly shirt and some old man spilled red wine 🍷 on my boots 😂❤

The second time I saw him my sister and I were in the nosebleed section, on the back row. The ceiling of the stadium sloped down and I could reach up and back and touch it while sitting in my seat. I had binoculars so I didn’t mind. That’s funny about you getting red wine spilled on your boots. Prior to that concert I had wondered if Neil was offended at the reggae version of “Red, Red Wine”. He sang it that night and then busted into a rap about how people asked if it bothered him. The only lyrics I remember are the last line: “I don’t care ‘cause they’re playing my song!” I didn’t know at the time that he had started out as a songwriter. What a great showman he was! 💕

This is old school rock. My girlfriend first saw Neil Diamond in the early 70's. Before all the KZbin extras, it was still a powerful, popular song.

Neil Diamond (his REAL name) wrote most of the soundtrack for "The Jazz Singer." You can't go wrong with any of them. He has written so many hits, that is a rabbithole which would take a long time to go down. Also, check out Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA" with Home Free & The US Singing Sergeants.(military). You've heard the song, but never like this. It is Amazing. Then there's "Courtesy Of The Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)." Both are both classics that can be played on the 4th of July! Appreciate you.

this is about what made America amazing and real. Real immigrants who put their previous lives aside and started anew here as American Citizens, who took the risk, who paid the price, who are proud to say they are Americans. God bless America and it's people.

I'm so glad you've crashed into Neil Diamond. HUUUUUUUGE diverse catalogue - and he really loves including bit (or a lot!!) of orchestra in whatever he composes and performs. Try "Love On The Rocks" and "Hello Again" from the same movie, and then hit the whole Hot August Night album ((Live At The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles/1972)

When I hear this song it makes me think of my grandparents coming by boat to this country from Scotland. They were young adults leaving their families and everything they knew to come to the unknown. Hoping to have a better life for themselves and their future children.

OMG I love Neil Diamond!!!! Reminds me of being a little girl dancing with my dad in the family room. Neil was one of my parents' fave. You should react to Love on the Rocks. Such a great song. Too many amazing songs to list. Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane. I feel like a little girl dancing with my dad again. 🥰🥰 We always heard this song at the end of fireworks events in Florida during the 70s. Btw, please dance with your daughters. They will treasure those memories!!! Much love and peace ❤

BP, it's great that you found Neil Diamond. He's one of the best singers/songwriters ever. For yourself and the many commenters discovering Neil Diamond for the first time I'd like to pass along a vast number of his hit songs for your archives. If people can find it, I'd also like to recommend that they look for his 3 CD set titled "Neil Diamond - In My Lifetime." Here is a vast list of his originally released songs from that 3 CD set: 1) Solitary Man 2) Cherry, Cherry 3) I Got The Feelin' (Oh, No No) 4) I'm A Believer (Recorded by The Monkees) 5) A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You (Also recorded by The Monkees) 6) Kentucky Woman 7) The Boat That I Row (This song was also recorded by Lulu) 8) Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon 9) You Got To Me 10) Thank The Lord For The Night Time 11) Red, Red Wine (Song also recorded by UB 40) 12) Shilo 13) Brooklyn Roads 14) Sweet Caroline 15) Holly Holy 16) Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show 17) Cracklin' Rosie 18) Soolaimon 19) He Ain't Heavy... He's My Brother (Song recorded by The Hollies) 20) Play Me 21) I Am... I Said 22) Song Sung Blue 23) Longfellow Serenade 24) Desiree 25) Forever In Blue Jeans 26) You Don't Bring Me Flowers (Duet with Barbra Streisand 27) Love On The Rocks 28) Heartlight (Beautiful song about ET from the David Spielberg movie). ** Lastly, there's an awesome song not on this 3 CD set. People should look for the long 4:40 minute version of the song "Walk On Water" from '72 which has a lovely outro. ** Enjoy people if you've never heard these songs before!

This is from the film The Jazz Singer. The guy in the audience wearing the yarmulke plays his father (I think it was Sir Lawrence Olivier). Neil Diamond is a prolific songwriter. He wrote this and 90% of the songs he performed. You should check out Brother Love's Salvation Show (the BBC version is excellent because it has a spoken intro by Neil that's very relevant to how he came to write the song). He's a Jewish boy from New York who was on a spiritual journey which you can see in his music, particularly in the Jonathan Livingston Seagull album. He can also do country! In the Hot August Night concert he performed a couple, including You're So Sweet (Horseflies Keep Hanging 'Round Your Face!). He was hospitalized after that concert for exhaustion and dehydration. There is a concert album with is a must listen. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. He put on one hell of a show.

The older man in the audience is Sir Lawrence Olivier, he is sitting next to Lucy Arnez (Lucille Ball's daughter) the amazing about Sir Lawrence is that he would not respond to anybody who called him "Sir Lawrence" he was adamant that people call him "Larry". This is actually a re-make of the Jazz Singer from 1927 which was the first "talkie".
