When Jack White was a kid, he misheard "Salvation Army" as "Seven Nation Army," which is how he got the title for this song. White will often take a distinctive phrase he finds interesting and use it as a song title. This song deals with The White Stripes' rising popularity and the negatives that came with it. After White came up with the riff, he devised a storyline in which a protagonist comes into town and all his friends are gossiping about him. "He feels so bad he has to leave town, but you get so lonely you come back," said White. "The song's about gossip. It's about me, Meg (the drummer) and the people we're dating." Seven Nation Army has one of the most famous basslines in music, but it wasn't created with a bass. The White Stripes didn't have a bass player, so Jack White played the riff using a guitar with an octave effect to sound like a bass.

I lived in Detroit back when this came out. The hate from the local Indy and rock groups was real. He couldn’t go anywhere without getting literally bullied. “Sell outs”. They were just jealous of course. When he points to his hand it’s a Michigan thing. “Show me on your hand” is because MI is shaped like a hand, so you can point to where you live on your hand. So he is pointing and calling out Detroit for being haters without naming it. They pretty much had to leave for their safety.

Jack White is literally keeping rock n roll alive. Everything he’s does is intentional but manages to make it seem effortless. He literally has 20 different jobs, starting Third Man Records along with 2 record manufacturing plants in Detroit and Nashville which has created thousands of new jobs, cataloging and preserving tens of thousands of old records and rereleasing them, to building eclectic pieces of furniture. He is 1000% original and yet at his core he’s still a humble working class kid from Detroit.

The White Stripes, an American rock group consisting of Jack White (guitar, keyboards, piano, vocals) and Meg White (drums, percussion, vocals) were formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1997, a year after they got married. They were a leading group of the 2000s indie rock and garage rock revival. By the time they released their debut album in 1999, Jack and Meg were separated. When they released their second album in 2000, their divorce was finalized. None of this hurt their musical chemistry. Meg was happy to let Jack set the musical direction - he did the songwriting and played most of the instruments while Meg held down the drums (he started out as a drummer and taught Meg how to play). Her unrefined drumming style became a hallmark of their sound and complemented Jack's unruly guitar and vocals very well. There's really no trace of their relationship tribulations in their songs. In fact, they claimed to be brother and sister until an enterprising reporter found their marriage certificate in 2001.

I always thought they started the band the year after they got divorced, not the year after they got married. And had always told people that they were brother and sister so they didn't have to explain that they were married and divorced and still working together.......
@stephenstrudwick8095
@stephenstrudwick8095 4 ай бұрын
@@decolonizeEverywhereAfter dating for a few years, Jack and Meg got married in 1996. Jack Gillis took his wife’s surname, becoming Jack White. The White Stripes formed in Detroit in 1997. Their reputation quickly grew beyond the Michigan underground music scene, and by 1999 they had a record deal that allowed them to make their self-titled debut album. A pillar of the group was their ongoing lie that they were siblings, not a couple. According to Jack White: “When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think, ‘Oh, I see…’ When they’re brother and sister, you go, ‘Oh, that’s interesting,’” he said. “You care more about the music, not the relationship-whether they’re trying to save their relationship by being in a band.” It's true that the group had been on the rocks before they properly began. Jack and Meg White secretly divorced in 2000 before they achieved the height of their fame. Jack White assumed that was it for the band and asked some local musicians to play with him at their remaining booked shows. On the day of their first gig, Meg showed up and said that, despite the split, the group should keep going. So they did, giving the world their biggest hits after their romantic relationship was over.

@@decolonizeEverywhereIf you're saying the White Stripes formed in 1997, put out their first album in 1999, while tellling people they were brother and sister, then yes. They actually started the White Stripes, got a record deal, and put out their first album in 1999 while they were still married. Jack White did not want their marriage to be a distraction from the music. They became much more famous following the release of their second album. At that point, they had split romantically, and I think they had also finalized their divorce. They continued to tell everyone they were brother and sister because, in my opinion, why complicate things at such a crucial point in the group's career, and most certainly take the emphasis away from their music. Plus this ruse gave Meg more room to become iconic for her primitive drumming style, rather than being viewed as the "Linda McCartney" of the group....

Seven Nation Army has become a very popular tune for sports supporters to chant out during games. I believe it started when supporters of one of the Spanish football clubs (I cannot remember which one but Malaga & Sevilla come to mind) were in a bar in the Netherlands before a game when Seven Nation Army came on the TV. The fans sang along with the riff and reprised the chant during the game. Supporters from other clubs starting to copy and the song became viral across stadiums in Europe.

The White Stripes was a rock band from Detroit, USA. They were one of the best-known representatives of garage rock. The guitarist and singer Jack White and the drummer, percussionist and occasional singer Meg White pretended to be siblings, but were married from September 1996 to March 2000. In earlier music projects, Jack White played drums and only later switched to guitar.

Wikipedia-John Mulvey of NME described "Seven Nation Army" as a "diatribe against fame". The song's lyrics were inspired by the growing attention received by the White Stripes. According to Jack White, the song tells the story of a person who, upon entering a town, hears its residents gossiping about him and proceeds to leave the town in response. Driven by a sense of loneliness, he ultimately returns. Regarding the song's meaning, White stated, "The song's about gossip. It's about me, Meg and the people we're dating." Maginnis described the lyrics as presenting an "obstinate attitude", citing the opening lines: "I'm gonna fight 'em off / A seven nation army couldn't hold me back / They're gonna rip it off / Taking their time right behind my back".

When he says the line, "Go back home", you'll notice that he points to his palm. That's something that Michiganders do, the state kinda looks like a mitten, so they hold up their hand and point to where on the mitten they're from. Where he puts his finger is about where Detroit is. He and Meg(the drummer and his ex-wife) are from Detroit, so this song could be about going out to the middle of nowhere to get away from it all for a while and then going back home to get back to your roots.

I played the sousaphone so I played the bass line which is actually played by the guitar. The sousas would start off the song for the first four measures and then the band would come in. Every time we played this song I got so hype that I would sometimes mess up so this song really is one of the best hype songs.

Great level of vibe for a two-piece band.I think this song is about how gossip and rumors can drain your confidence. I think 'going to Wichita'(and there is one in Kansas and one in Texas btw)is a reference to getting away from the mainstream ,putting your nose to the grindstone and focusing on your goals. By using you time in that manner, you won't have time to be distracted by other nonimportant things.

The song is about rumours & gossip. Some say it’s about the rumours about Jack & Meg themselves as they played into the rumours that they were siblings when they were actually a married couple. Btw, the expression is ‘he said, she said’ as it refers to a past conversation, not a current one.

Sporting events/venues play this a lot - the crowd will chant "dah, da-dadada-da daa" along with the riff. But this song is more about the vibe than the lyrics. So you could go crazy trying to fully break it down.

I love that song. The riff kicks ass. Another artist did a cover of this that is also amazing. Pistmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhardt. Its so different its like a different song but with the same amazing central riff. Not suggesting you do a reaction unless you want to, but really worth a watch.

Jack White is an interesting character, and whether you like him or not you have to appreciate his creativity. He became close friends with Loretta Lynn a few years back, and they actually did some work together. You may want to check out Loretta Lynn's video of the song "Portland Oregon" as an example.

I always liked this song. Meg and Jack are a couple, and formed the White Stripes band in Detroit in 1997.

They were a couple nearly 20 years ago. Now both got married again. Jack is writing music (of course), and Meg is just living in Detroit, raising kids and avoiding public attention.

I really enjoy the art of Jack White hes an interesting artist. Some fun facts.. he and Loretta Lynn are close friends and in his journey of his art he collabed also with Ricky Scaggs once. This song here was big like award big of im not mistaken and this is also just him and his wife on the drums. Jack also has been in a couple other bands as well. If I recall correctly the design of this vid was based on the triad of 3 colors which he spoke about once but I can't recall all that was said but he mentioned something about the art of designing the vid in the simple 3 color scheme js. BP this artist is such a good artist in my personal opinion just sayin I dove into the rabbit hole for a short bit but gave lost touch as to what he is currently into of which I may go take a look now because of this reaction lol. Thanks as always such a pleasure ✌ take care
