Poor Waylon Jennings....Remember "the day the music died" (February 3rd, 1959), the day memorialized by Don McLean in his 1972 hit "American Pie"? On this day, a plane crash killed up-and-coming musicians Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (ie, the Big Bopper), and Ritchie Valens. The plane had been chartered to transport the performers from Iowa to their next show in North Dakota. One member of Holly’s travelling band who did not make this plane trip was Waylon Jennings. He had been hired by Holly to play bass for him on that fateful Winter Dance Party Tour. Rather than further enduring tour bus issues and a long frozen bus trip, Holly decided to charter a small plane. Unfortunately, it could not fit everybody. Richardson, who was suffering from the flu, asked Jennings, who was 21 at the time, for his seat on the plane. When Jennings told Buddy Holly that he was going to take the bus, Holly jokingly told him he hoped the bus broke down, to which Jennings replied, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.” Waylon never really got over this encounter, and it haunted him til the day he died in 2002. RIP Waylon. Sometimes fate deals us a terrible hand. Fortunately, Waylon Jennings did go on to be a trailblazer in outlaw country music!!!

he was but they would not put his picture on his first album because they knew that a lot of country music fans would not buy his record because of his color. Country music and America has come a long way but we should never minimize the truth about our past. For the first 18 years of my life i never listened to anything but country music and still love to listen to the artist of the 60' and 70's because they were stars when i was growing up so i am not a country music hater. I just remember that country music was not friendly or helpful to black artist trying to start a career in the business.

Several years ago, his grandson called the Kansas Vietnam Veterans and Family reunion an a Saturday morning ti see if he could bring hid band up to play at the reunion. He was advised that they didn't have the funds to pay him and he advised that he didn't care. He brought his band up , from Oklahoma, to El Dorado Lake State Park in Kansas. He had started to play the second song and it started raining. He continued to play for another half hour. When he started singing one of Waylon's songs, you would have thought it was Waylon singing! He was a realy down to earth guy,and said he just wanted to give back to the veterans!

I have been watching many videos here on KZbin from people from North Korea that defected from NK as well as people from other countries that have visited the USA and watching their amazement and admiration of us, not only as people individually but as a nation, has reawakened me to the realization of how much influence the US has on the rest of the world and what a huge responsibility we have as a nation to set an example of what it's like to live in a free society. We aren't perfect but we struggle every day to be better. We are a most fortunate people to have been born here or to have been able to become naturalized citizens here and even those that haven't become citizens yet, we all have a responsibility to live up to the dream that founded our country. America isn't just a country it's an ideal, an idea, a goal, a hope and I firmly believe that together we can set aside our differences, join in the things we share and continue to keep our beacon of light shining for those that long for liberty, justice, human dignity and the right to build the life they choose.

You are going to get comments from this video for a long time with stories about the man the legend. Mr. Waylon Jennings. Here's mine . I don't recall the year but its been quite a few years ago. I will condense it to save time. The IRS had taken Willy Nelsons home in Evergreen for back taxes owed. Well when it came time to auction it off Waylon was there and won . A couple days later Waylon caught up to Willy on a Farm Aid tour and handed him the keys on stage and said something to the effect of '' Here's your house keys, don't lose em again'', Then they embraced like two brothers reunited after years of being apart.

I grew up in southern Oregon, graduated in 1977. I later learned I lived in a very racist town. It surprised me, because none of my friends were racist. It was their parents. My generation actually thought that shit got settled, we thought we had taken care of that. I guess some didn't get the message, but overall, I don't think Americans are racist. I now live in NW Washington State. We got some proud boys in the neighborhood, along with many Ukrainians, Latinos and natives. Overall, we all get along. One of the proud boys actually stepped in to shoot at a drunk dude with a shotgun that shot 2 cops in our neighborhood. We can coexist. Peace out.

🔴⚪🔵 Most all the foreign reactors have talked about of the things they love about America is our patriotism, and how they wish their home country was more like that. I'm starting to wish ours was too. So much has changed since 9-11, when there were flags everywhere and more people had pride in our country. If it's so bad, why do people risk it all to come here? 🔴⚪🔵

BP you need to check out Home Free “Brothers in Arms”. It’s a cover, actually an upgrade, of a Dire Straits song. A Capella, no instruments.. just pure harmony and patriotic chills. 👍👍👍
