El Manana is such a beautifully sung and arranged song & video, it makes me a bit teary eyed whenever I listen to it. Melancholy Hill is great with it's haunting undertones juxtaposed with the almost wistfully hopeful melody. I literally cannot watch it without watching Stylo first, I'm hard wired to watch/listen to them in the stories chronological order haha.

The first 2 Gorillaz albums back in 2001 and 2005 were so far out of left field compared to everything else that was coming out at that time. And nearly every track on their self titled first album and Demon Days their second were absolute bangers. There was such a depth and fervent passion for what Albarn & Hewlett were creating, and it shows in the lyrics, the melodies, and the videos. They were classics as soon as they released, and they hold up over time so so well. Even 20 years later, they still have that same energy and the same hook that gets into you. Glad you're digging into these songs. Others to listen to from that era: 5/4, 19-2000, Tomorrow Comes Today, Dirty Harry, Dare, and El Mañana.

The music video ties into an other music video, for "El Mañana". Their discography is quite broad, but I think you might enjoy "Stylo", "Pac-Man", "Dare" or "Garage Palace" for very different reasons. The animation and music is of the highest quality in all of them. Also, the person on the edge of the windmill is not 2-D the singer, but Noodle, the guitarist ( who kicked the sh*it out of undead apes in "Clint Eastwood").

If you plan on diving deeper into the tracks in Demon Days, keep in mind that it came out in 2005, and the major thematic elements involve the political climate of the West post 9-11, especially the US’s war in Iraq. The album starts out very pessimistic about the state of the world but it ultimately ends on an optimistic note. If you haven’t listened to the entire album from beginning to end, you’re missing out. What does the windmill represent in Feel Good Inc? 2D is reminiscing/dreaming about the windmill that's headed for real land - the land he belonged to before the Inc took over his autonomy. He sings about the love and freedom that turned forever on the windmill land and invites everyone at the Inc to join in.
@JakobeB
@JakobeB 5 ай бұрын
Feel good inc. is where the band is going partying using drugs/sec to feel good. The windmill is outside of all that where noodle is happy without the drugs. The tower is even shaped almost like a needle. 2-D wants out that’s why he longs to be on the windmill with noodle. De La Soul represents when the partying starts again and 2-D is drawn back into partying and dancing. Then he goes back to longing for the windmill and getting away from the drugs. The second rap verse he doesn’t start dancing he just gets sad it’s starting again.

one of the best bands i've ever seen live, saw the plastic beach tour in the UK at the o2 arena, theres like 30 band members on stage including 2 drum kits, one had electric samples and a sub-bass sidechained to the kick it was immense. De la soul supported AND did their featured gorrilaz songs, Damon Albarn has this signature sound for those 2 albums where his mic is like a repurposed police radio receiver so the white noise distortion and feedback isn't post processing he can genuinely just sound like that its got this like ethereal quality to it

For me, this song always felt like they were singing about the difference between artificial happiness provided by drugs/sex/etc vs the happiness that is actually real and fulfilling. The person outside playing the guitar is a girl by the way, her name is Noodle. The one singing the song is named 2-D, he's not the only one on the island.

This is probably the closest I've seen any reaction channel get to the true meaning of the song. You are right about it taking shots at the music industry and the idea that they're selling good feels in an Orwellian Utopia kind of way. The only mistake you made is that it wasn't 2-D, the singer, on the floating island with the windmill it was noodle, the bassist.

to correct you too noodle is a guitarist and not bassist, that's Murdoc the mastermind of evil :D

At 11:22 - I just realized something. They mentioned Motown, which is in Detroit, Michigan. But at this point, they mentioned Cheddar-Headed... Cheeseheads are fans of the Green Bay Packers in Wisconsin, the state next door to Michigan. They might be talking about "cheddar" as money, but I think it is another interesting layer.

"Why does he look 2D there?" Well, his name *is* 2-D, after all. Lol. Also, he wasn't seeing himself. That was Noodle on the windmill island. When I first saw the video I thought it was him, too. I didn't know Noodle had aged at the time (I was a casual-at-best listener of Gorillaz. Check out the Gorillaz lore on your off time. It's crazy deep). The video for "El Manana" (I don't know the alt+ code for the appropriate N and am currently too lazy to look it up) picks up immediately after this video, with the attack choppers chasing the windmill island.

alt+164. (part of being a Spanish speaker. It's muscle memory by now) I also thought it was 2D outside when I first saw this video. Even though it's Noodle outside, his analysis still kinda works; 2D is locked inside looking out while Noodle is sitting oustide with her legs dangling form the edge.

So, to break this down for you - this song is about the music industry, which they call "Feel Good Inc." This song is a cautionary tale - "Feel Good Inc" got their claws into the band and now owns them. They supply the bass guitarist with women, the drummer just keeps his head down and observes what happened to the band, the lead vocalist is singing about how they can't sing about what they want to any more, and he just wanted to be free "like a windmill" to make his own music, for his own creative soul, while looking out the window at Noodles, the lead guitarist, who left the band, thus getting away from the record company, and is now free to make the music he likes. As a final allegory, the helicopters you were wondering about, were from "Feel Good Inc" - and were chasing Noodles on the windmill to either convince him to rejoin the band (and be under their control), or they will try to destroy him. That was the actual explanation of the song from the "Gorillaz" band - its shots at how record companies do things and destroy artists to further their own greed.

One small correction.... the character on the floating island in the video is not 2-D, it's Noodle, she looks different from her appearance in the Clint Eastwood Song because Feel Good Inc is part of the Demon Dayz Album... which came out in 2005... 5-6 years after Clint Eastwood was released. The fictitious world where the characters of Gorillaz live evolves and passes time simultaneously to our real world. When the Clint Eastwood song released Noodle was only 10 years old, here in Demon Dayz she's 15 (and currently she's more than 30yrs old). Also... I Really recommend you to watch/listen the Song called "El Mañana" directly after this one, since El Mañana Is the direct continuation of Feel Good Inc.

The windmill is actually a reference to pre-Industrial Revolution. It's supposed to be a commentary on how back then windmills didn't cause pollution and physical harm to people, like how music back then used to be about expression and making good music. Now music is all about pumping out as many tunes as possible and they all sound the same and empty. It's amazing how Gorillaz ties in not just politics, but actual history too

Thankyou. Like alot of people have said Damon Albarn is the singer and also the singer of a band called Blur who were around in the mid 90s. Their stuff is Brit Pop so would be interesting to see some of that. Some suggestions would be Parklife or Song 2 but there are many others. Like the other one I have heard this so many times but never really listened and i forgot how good it was untill the last video and i went back. Also there is alot of things i missed which now i hear them i appreciate even more.
