"More" honestly sounds like the Korean word "물" or "Mul/Mur" which means "Water". And with that, he starts by saying "Yeah I'm thirsty" then "On this beat, I'm surfin'" and then the direct Korean translation of the line "I'm on my element" is basically "The fish meets the water" which is ohmaghad a really great metaphor of being in one's element (which is music, dancing, and rapping for jhope), and lastly "Soak up the music". So it is really playing around with bars relating or connecting to both music and water. I'm REALLY REALLY glad you caught on to that real fast even if you ain't understand Korean. Respect! [edit: I realized someone posted my comment on Twitter and it got a lot of corrections, and even hate. My theory comes from the fact that Jhope's rap style is very distinct and he usually pronounces words with a bit of shortcutting accent, or slang. Examples like "했어요" become just "haess" when he raps, or like when he says "믿음으로" in the song Run BTS, he pronounces it as "mideumrow". So I'm just putting it out there as a theory. You don't have to believe it. I just find Jhope's pronunciation very interesting to dissect. I know my interpretation is quite a stretch as it is simply an interpretation, it is not the truth ofc.) ] [edit 2: And if anyone is wondering, I have self-studied korean for more than 10 years, starting from when I was just merely 11 years old. Its not that deep, you can move on from my theory or interpretation.]

I'm kinda thinking that Jack in the box is inspired by Pandora's box, Because jack is like the HOPE(the only thing that left in Pandora's box) Which is both of them are just waiting for someone to open the box so they can be free now:') (Also the caption on Hobi's new insta post is he's asking hope if he's still gonna stay in the box) "Are you just going to stay in the box?"

So that first verse all strings to water. He did say a lot missed on the bars in this song due to language barrier. j-hope is extremely clever with his lyrics. Uses a lot of literature and pop culture references. He is so brave to experiment which is what a true artist should do. Not stagnate. He is so good at blending genres. Extremely versatile since he could do it all. Sing and manipulate his voice to fit the song. He is a true artist & musician!

hobi's album is called Jack in The Box (thus the box we've visited in the mv and the jester hat) The imagery used for Jack in the Box’s concept is closer to a Jester than a classic Clown. Jesters, also called “Fools”, were entertainment in medieval courts. In fact, they were known for being heard from afar due to the loud bells on their caps and their fake sceptres. The real comedy is that a “fool” was not synonymous with someone who was unintelligent. In fact, their fake sceptres were symbols of masking reality with humour. Jesters/Fools were actually famous for accurate observations and delivering profound wisdom with funny loudness. Even today, “you jest” or a “jester” is a phrase for someone pretending to not understand when they’re acutely aware of everything and even have wise opinions on it. For many the jack-in-the box is known as an amusing and harmless children's toy, but its origins convey a much darker story. To the casual observer the object is usually regarded as consisting a clown rigged to a coiled spring that pops out for an entertaining display. However original jack-in-the-box actually contained a very particular variety of joker, augustes. Whilst most clowns have a face of white makeup, often attired in a pointy hats and ruffles collars, augustes have a large red noses and are clothes in oversized trousers, often flowers in their buttonholes. While the Jack character certainly looks like a comical figure, his purpose wasn't always amusement. In 12th century Norway Sir John Schorne was a cherished figure, his people declaring he possessed the powers of healing. The way he did this was supposedly due to the fact that he had captured the devil in a boot and was now exploiting the powers. There are many famous artworks that illustrate him holding a boot with a creature peeking out, leading many to believe this was the foundation for the jack-in-the-box. One ofthe earliest documented cases of the traditional jack-in-the-box can be traced back to 15th century Germany. A clock maker crafted the gift for a local prince, using a wooden box with metal edges and a cranking handle. It played a spirited tune and held the traditional auguste exhibiting a leering smile. When other nobles caught sight of it, their desire of these toys for their own children began a trend that has lasted for centuries. It has been expressed through folklore and legends that in 15th century France they were using the boxes for a very specific purpose. In French, a jack-in-the-box is called a diable en boîte, which translates to "devil in a box." It is said that these boxes were actually created to capture and hold demons or evil spirits. Many would fashion the boxes with elaborate engravings and amusing artwork to lure the demon's interest. They would then employ the playful music and surprise opening of the lid to trap the demons. Their essence was then believed to become trapped in the Jack character, which was why they were originally made to look sinister with maniacal grins. The box was then to be hidden away where no one would ever be tempted to open it again, as doing so would cause the demon to be released back into our dimension considering all that and hobi's own words that this album will show his darker side and thoughts, plus the fact that the corridor set with doors is soooo similar to the same one in BTS' Interlude: Shadow mv, I am pretty sure Jack is hobi’s shadow. Shadow (by Carl Jung with whose work bts’ art is very connected) is an unconscious part of our personality: suppressed thoughts and traits that we feel we'd be shamed for if shown, something we are afraid to release in a fear of harming or disturbing the life we have. it is represented in the mv by the box with all kind of places inside. hobi goes through the doors there and meets Jack with a modern mechanical jester hat - his shadow - in a hospital without a heartbeat - it was so suppressed to the point of dying. Which is no good because we still need not so positive parts of us to in order to be whole. As bts talked about it in Map Of The Soul album series and even earlier with Blood Sweat & Tears, accepting all good and bad about yourself is the way to become a better person, a process of individuation. In the mv Hobi opens the box to look inside of himself, to look at the unwanted parts of himself. In the end he’s in thoughts as of deciding what to do with those, he is aware of his shadow, the next step is to accept it. He posted the jack in the box album visual teaser on his Instagram with the words “Are you just going to stay in the box?”. I guess the album will let us know if the shadow is unleashed also i think it's cool to mention that hobi's stage name J-hope and first mixtape name Hope World come from another box: Pandora's box. story reminder: Pandora opened the jar releasing all the evils that visit humanity like pain and suffering, leaving only hope inside once she had closed it again. actually we’ve already seen Jack in the box from hobi. In the mentioned first mixtape released in 2018 he had a short outro song called Blue Side. In 2021 he released Blue Side again, but this time a full version. In the message attached to the song he reminisces his younger self from three years ago writing Hope World and, since these were his first steps, says that he maybe couldn’t express everything he wanted in the music yet. So with the rerelease he wanted to say that he has matured enough to show more. on the cover for Blue Side rerelease among all the scribbled drawings there’s already a jack in the box. The words “Pandora box” are also there Visual teaser for Jack in the box album was posted with the words “Only one thing was left in the box. It was "Hope" “. I believe Hope in quotation marks means that it’s a name, frankly boys often shorten stage name J-Hope to Hope and call hobi like that. So we are not only told that Jack is Hobi’s shadow, but also that Hobi’s shadow is the same Hope that we’ve known all along. It’s the same person, just different side A cool thing: if we look at Jack in the box album concept photos, we notice that hobi is wearing round and big clown boots, but also that the font for J in the name of the album is stylized to look like a boot too. Remember demon in the boot? Another fun thing: MORE was released 1st July. July 1 is International Joke Day lol

Always love a rapper's and musician's analysis of raps and music. Thank you. You are the only one who managed to do a solid breakdown of his rap and lyrics here in ways "civilians" like myself can digest. At least the English part of it. So many of those had been totally lost on me. Until now. I am sure I am not alone! Sadly, the English translations of a lot of these Korean raps seem to be very inadequate from what I heard Korean speakers shared. Like "in my element" was actually "fish meeting water" or something like that. I mean. Sure, we get the idea with "my element". But seriously. Is it that hard to translate to English "Fish Meeting Water" and type that instead of "in my element"? The word play was TOTALLY obliterated. This is easily one of J-Hope's best work. A channel called Just React described J-Hope's rapping as "chewy" and I thought that was a very apt description. Thanks again for your invaluable breakdown which gives someone like me a window to a whole different world.
@aarceeandtannies22172 жыл бұрын
On another thought, they might have purposely dumb down the trans on MVs to give another layer to the bars.. for army, that would be easily translated accurately by our translators on twitter so we see everything.. BTS bars goes cross languages a lot of times, also multiple entendres, one line can be understood multiple ways depending on the listener’s state of mind or knowledge. How I wish people would be like Knox who finds the possible meanings by getting the context from other lines. But I do to wish that BH will provide literal translations for the simple minded, some people doesn’t get the idea that there’s a lot of things lost in translation.

When you said "What's in the box?" it made me think of Brad Pitt's iconic line in David Fincher's film 'Se7en'. Then I clued in that the musicians look like Jared Leto's character Angel Face from David Fincher's film 'Fight Club', which also starred Brad Pitt (Jin's self-professed Hollywood mancrush, lol). So much reference, detail and layers go into these videos, never mind into the music and lyrics!!! Oh, that's a court jester's hat, like the album name 'Jack in the Box', like a joker in a deck of cards. Jared Leto also played The Joker...and Fincher just did 'The Batman'. The connections never end, lolol! I just looked up Dali and jester together, and there is a book called Salvador Dali, The Surrealist Jester. He used jesters as a common image in his paintings.

This is one that gets even better the more you listen as there’s so much to pick out! I take the box as in the whole song was in the box, because the sound was muffled until he opened it. Then by closing it I feel like he’s saying “that’s one side to me, let me show you more” and that’s where the album will come in. I’m excited for Chapter 2, BTS aren’t going anywhere and it’s awesome that each member can take time to find their individuality a bit before coming back as a group and blowing us all away with new music! You were right that we’d love this man! Great breakdown. I’ve enjoyed diving into all the sneaky and hidden references J-Hope has been scattering for a while now. His album will be called ‘Jack In The Box’ and on the cover art for an outro song off his first album (2018 but released a full version of the song in 2021) there is a picture of a Jack in the box. So this has been in the works a long time. This song was also released on national joke day and in the mv he has clown shoes on and a jester’s hat. I think the box represents what you said and also (if related to the Pandora’s Box teaser from the other day) then it’s the question…’what is left in the box?’ ‘What sides have we still to discover from him’? He’s very good with lyricism especially with literary references (I think his dad was/is a literature professor).

Enjoyed this reaction so much I’m back for another watch! Someone pointed out that some of the scenes mirror the film Fight Cub! I Wonder if that was intentional 🤔 Also this is a random thing to say but as I saw a couple of questionable comments. There may be some views that are like ‘oh now he’s doing solo songs he can show his true self’ or ‘finally not a Kpop song’. From BTS’ own words and journey, and if you know and listen to their lyrics, you know they haven’t really ever followed Kpop trends or for the most part even make typical ‘Kpop’ songs. What they’ve done in their journey so far has been honest and raw, they’ve explored themselves as a group and conveyed important messages and raised awareness. None of that was ‘fake’ or not a ‘true part of themselves’. Yes they can be more open about themselves individually and they’ve done that before. All their previous mixtapes were still a part of them. Human beings change and it’s impossible to be happy 24/7. J-Hope’s last mixtape was more upbeat but the lyrics were not all upbeat, and that was still a real part of J-Hope. And this next album will be another side to see. Being in BTS wasn’t ‘holding them back’ but has shaped them and given them the opportunity to individually showcase more sides to themselves, and experiment with new sounds etc. With solo projects you might encounter ‘toxic solo fans’. But all seven are BTS and always will be, as they have said so many times. Just wanted to say that to be wary of some mindsets, they tend to twist narratives to fit their own desire/fantasy but don’t actually listen to their favourite member’s own words. It’s a weird controlling mindset. ANYWAY. Now they get to explore so much more like you said Knox! And I’m LOVING this sound. I’m very excited for his new album! Hope you can check that out too!
@leej6762 жыл бұрын
Oh 100%! I think a select few (not the 90% army that V mentioned 😂) have been waiting a long time for the chance to say “finally he’s free to really be himself” which is ridiculous, because 1, anyone that knows BTS from their own words and songs knows they love each other and will be BTS for a long time. And 2, experimenting with new sounds and having a ‘darker, grungier’ concept does not mean all the past work (group or solo) isn’t also a part of their true selves - it was just another part and how they were feeling at that time. Now is the time to really dig into that individual style and I’m here for it 🔥

So jhope name is related to pandora box when the box was open the evil got out and just one evil remains inside hope The mv was all inside the box in the end of the mv the evil that got out of the box was looking at hope that was left inside the box but the question is will this hope that was left inside the box remain there forever in one of his ig posts jhope posted a jack in the box toy asking “ are you just going to stay in the box ?” With the # hopeinthebox This man blows my mind 🫠 and he literally dropped the mv on 1/7 (7 members and he is the first to start this new chapter) which also was the international jester day

Apparently they're holding a concert in October this year too to help with Korea's bid to host the World Expo in Busan in 2030...so it's quite funny that people think BTS are going anywhere. It's going to be nonstop music, I'm scared haha.

Ahhh I was waiting for your reaction on this! His album is coming on 15 and is called Jack in the Box, refering precisely on stepping out of the box on every level, talking about letters and music genre, you should watch this old solo song like Hangsang, Ego and Daydreaming, and you'll see the contrast and huge change of style it is!!! P.S. Your new Survivor song is on another level, you are so damn talented not only for music analysis, also creating music Knox!!

This was great thank you Knox! I had the same reaction at the chorus 😂 Really hope you’ll be able to have some time to do his album as sounds like he’s put a lot of thought and layers into the whole thing. The tracklist just literally dropped too and seeing the song titles has got me more excited 🔥 Somehow think that ‘Arson’ is about to be an absolute headbanger haha!

the box actually symbolizes the title of his album Jack In The Box originally a Court Jester entertains over and over so it’s speaks volumes about this song and him too he wants to keep making more music keep learning keep growing keep looking for new sounds it’s his passion he’s so driven to keep following his heart he’s always thirsty for more basically what we all are recognized with that journey of stick to playing with the right cards right people don’t sacrifice others to selfishly get what you want because you end up messing up your own future.

One of the smartest reactor out there. Thank you for your reaction! Btw, J-hope closing the box is a reference to he not wanting to be box in as an artist. He wants freedom.

Of all the reactions to More, yours is the one I've been waiting for. I know you'd be able to appreciate the hard work Jhope has put into this song and the video and hearing you unpack More makes me understand the song more. Thank you! I really hope Hobi gets to watch this 💜

You are so good!! I really like his cadence styles in this and the delivery. As a pre-hype song this did the trick! I’m assuming there’s a title track still to come for the album but it’ll probably drop on 15th together. As J-Hope said, the album is a story and shows different sides so it would be a great one to do in a live 😉🔥

Yeeeeaaahhh i was waiting for this reaction ! I love to watch your brain boiling and how you catch to the flow. The title of the album is Jack in the box. And in a Festa dinner (BTS content) they said that J-hope's album will be really structured with a strong theme. So maybe in each songs (box) well discover a new J-hope's side ? Thank You for this reaction 💜

His entire album drops on the 15th and it is gunna be amazing and have so many layers so I really hope you do a full album reacts. Great work as always, I was waiting on tenterhooks for you to get to the first chorus as its just so different to anything in terms of genre to what BTS as a group has released. Jhope's deep voice and high pitch sound is suitable for Rock and Hip-hop. He makes his own unique metal hip-hop in Rock; Jhope is no longer a street performer, but he is the hardest factory workman to make the music in his jumpsuits. He seems to want to express behind the dark music industries that constantly copy idols like machines in the box. Even though he has to live as a clown and zombie to become an idol of many people, he still feels thirsty to show his music more more more to his fans so that he can breathe in and out of what he feels is alive. He's a real genius for this metaphor to show a clown and zombie as an idol. Next time, I guess Jhope will come out of the dark box and go to the Sunlights to fly high like a butterfly 🧚♂️ 🦋 he will gain freedom as an artist. In chapter 2, he would shout freedom and feel alive outside the box and show more and more his music to more fans.
