They do this live as well. You can look up 90s Dance Medley Hollywood Bowl September 2022. Mitch's voice doesn't quite sound as voluminous, but it's super-strong. ETA - this one is recent enough that I imagine they were dressed by their current stylist, Candice Lambert. She does "streetwear as stage wear," and she gets them everything from vintage to the latest fashions. If you look at the photos and videos from the recent tour (Asia and Oceania, just finished), you'll see that they all wear different things, but on the same color palette. It's a great effect. Kirstin wears a lot of club looks (and in Japan and Singapore, anime looks), Scott and Mitch recently wear suits or slacks/jackets, but Kevin and Matt do fitness/streetwear.

The auto tune was homage to Cher since she was the first to use it artistically. Great reaction.

They don't use reverb, auto tune or instruments of any kind. No effects except what their voices can do. GOT IT! I'm a Pentaholic and know them very well. I'm tired of negative comments. They have control over their voices plus perfect pitch Mitch goes up C5 D5 & higher to whistle note, OK.

As a couple of people have mentioned, "Everytime We Touch" is a Maggie Reilly sone from 1992. Also, "Around the World (La La La La La)" is a cover of a Russian song "Pesenka (La La La)" released in 1998, so, technically a 90's song. 🙂

Mitch's highest note recorded for an official release is a Bb5 (proof of a B5 in a livestream where he was goofing around singing). The Bb5 is in the background on Deny U, an original from Superfruit - Mitch and Scott's shelved sideproject duo. You can hear him hit an A5 much more often - notably in Can You Feel The Love Tonight aaand the very popular fan-phone footage from their performance of Aha! during the concert in Singapore at the Star Vista, which was the first time fans heard one from him. The Aha! studio track doesn't go that high. If you're okay with kinda crappy audio, that fan video is amazing... Mitch and Avi (the bass) killed it. That's Mitch's actual moustache, he has it again right now. You'll find that his style changes a LOT through the years. Prep, emo, bald, mullet... he does it all. Yes, there are effects in the studio recordings. And vocal layering to varying degrees. They looooove reverb, especially. There are interviews with their main mixer/sound tech Ed Boyer and also Ben Bram who produces much of their music as well as arranging with them... both talk candidly about what is and isn't done so it isn't a secret or anything. Fans are weird.
@perfectkismet

Also, while I know nothing about making music... a DJ who does reaction videos explained that the autotune effect Cher started happens when you set whatever it is to zero... so, like, you aren't telling it to adjust the pitch to anything in either direction but it still does whatever electronic weirdness to the vocal.

I graduated HS in 1992, college in 1997. Houndstooth like Matt’s jacket was VERY in. And Kirstie’s curls…. Those full ringlets are front and center in my graduation picture. Mitch changes his look A LOT. The mustache is just his current look. He still has it in The Prayer that released a few weeks ago. They typically don’t use auto tune, but did in this song as an homage to the Cher Effect.

the Cascada version of Everytime We Touch certainly isn't from the 90s, but thats a cover - the original song is by Maggie Reilly and was released in 1992 - so it fits in the medley just fine :)

@@RobRobbie but the actual song is still a 90s song, so I don't see that it makes any sense to claim otherwise. I had to look it up because you made me doubt myself for a second. I think you might want to add some clarification in the future if you merely mean that the cover theirs most closely resemble was not from a certain year or decade, and not that the SONG itself wasn't from that year or decade.

I very clearly remember the Cher song Believe and the autotune was not used so much to fix tuning in that song as much as it was used as an overt effect. You can hardly do that song without heavy handed autotune. It’s kind of remembered as the song that introduced autotune to music listeners.

For this official video they did deliberately use reverb in some spots & autotune on Cher's song in tribute cause the 90s is when those started to get popular for use as an actual sound effect for style. However if you check out "PTX Daft Punk live private performance " it's an off mic performance & you can clearly hear how they don't have to add effects with a mic to get an electronic sound, it's just an enhancement.

You asked about Mitch's mustache. It shows up now and then. He went through phases with it, with mustache and beard, with no facial hair, with a really close hair cut, with a bit longer hair... you name it, he's tried the look. Check him out on the video of the song that was their 3rd Grammy - "Jolene" with Dolly Parton.

I love watching reactors go back to their youth with this medley, miming the lyrics and dancing along with the tunes. I get the same feeling with their "Evolution of Michael Jackson" video, and their cover of 'Sound of Silence," which is way more S & G than Disturbed. Music definitely unites the generations. Great reaction, once again!

If you really want to hear what Kevin (the beat boxer) can do, check out the Daft Punk medley. I believe Mitch's highest recorded sung note (in the sense of an actual sung syllable) is an F7, but there are several caveats on that. First, it's in one of those fooling-around-in-the-studio videos (I don't remember which one exactly), not part of an actual performed song, so it's possible that he can't do it reliably. Also, it's in an abnormal vocal register, and you can really tell; it doesn't sound like his normal voice, or like his falsetto either. As for the mustache, he changes his hair almost as often as he changes his clothes, and sometimes that includes facial hair. Tall blond dude (Scott) is the baritone. Hmm, which song shows him off best? Sound of Silence maybe? Dunno, that one's also really good for Matt's upper range. Almost all a capella groups use amplification and reverb, yes. They usually don't count those as "effects", perhaps because they are so often necessary for live performances, to compensate for the acoustical properties of the space. (Without them, in a typical large concert hall, any a capella group with fewer than about 200 members isn't going to sound right.) Whether Pentatonix uses other effects, I'm not 100% certain, but (apart from the megaphone distortion in Bohemian Rhapsody) I think mostly not: for evidence, I submit that there's a recording on KZbin of a private performance of the Daft Punk medley that they did in a medium-sized room backstage, with no microphones, and somebody filmed it with a handheld device, and you can clearly hear them do some of the stuff that sounds like EDM effects. It's not as good as in the music video, but (apart from the amazing visuals of course) I think most of what it's missing is amplification, reverb, and mixing (i.e., relative volume of each singer at various points in the song). The stuff that sounds like effects distortion and record skipping and so on is largely there in the raw vocals, including the Autotune effect in better/faster/stronger/our/work is/never/over (which, admittedly, is not as striking as the AutoTune effect on Kristi's Cher voice here). That video is on a channel called "Nick Riddell" if you want to look it up.

They did a Robyn song!!! During their "transition" between bassists (2017 Avi leaving & Matt joined during Christmas) It's Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, Kevin & Beyonce(Kevin's cello is named Beyonce lol). It's a live recording of them just sitting & singing. SO GOOD!!!!!!! And yes the autotune is used for effect as homage. Also, you should check out their Evolution videos. They are of different artist's extensive catalogs. And they are all live one takes!!!! Evolution of Rihanna is my favorite. But they have one for Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Nsync, Rihanna, one called Evolution of Music. They are put together as medleys like this one. Scott & Mitch have a channel called Superfruit where they did one for Lady Gaga & Miley Cyrus as well lol. If you want pure Kevin......check out his KOver of Down or Sign of the Times. Beatboxing, singing, cello, looping.....all him.....all simultaneously. Pentatonix got ALL the talent when God handed out portions!!!!!

From the techno side of PTX. Yes, they do a weird trick where they take Mitch's voice and split it to run through all 3 channels. Course you caught the auto-tune. It was not anything bad about Cher, and I loved it too. I didn't think "Every Time We Touch" was from the 90s, either but, apparently, Cascada's version was a semi-cover where the chorus was taken from the original Maggie Reilly song from 1992. So, technically, it's a 90s song.

Ok, Mitch can sing whistle notes. Which are usually not listed in the videos for his voice range. There are, however, videos that show both Kirstie and Mitch doing whistle notes. There's even a video where he replicates a marker on a white board. Plus, everyone in PTX, with the exception of Avi can rap. So face it, PTX is just way too talented. Accept it. Ok, in regards to the Cher bit, when PTX was on the sing off, they were going to sing that song for their guilty pleasure song and they were having issues with it, and switched to the buggles "video killed the radio star", which really launched them as the winner.

I think Mitch can go up to E flat 5...not sure. There is reverb on all voices...typical recording technique to work the dynamics, but there is no effect on his voice. Occasionally they will use a effect to pay homage to the original (e.g. the Cher piece in this mashup. They didn't change how they sing...they just used the autotune. Additionally, Mitch likes to change up his look frequently. Try not to pause so much. It makes it hard to vibe with you as you enjoy the music.
