The Rev is amazing, he is technical and precise and incredibly fast. But Mario is raw talent. You cant do prog drumming from a standard outlook. Like Smoky said, he couldnt even keep track of the time signatures. Mario is next level, on par with Danny Carey. Dont take that lightly.. Also, yall realize that the drummer and the singer are brothers right? Thats why the song ‘Stranded’ was written, its about their mother passing away early

I'm into a lot of prog/djent stuff, but I still give it to The Rev over Mario. Rev was playing sick pop-punk beats that matched the rest of A7X with their overall old school neoclassical, arguably prog metal guitars. These guys were on Total Request Live. That's normally for teenybopper shit, and the Rev was their secret weapon. They made a lyrical reference to Dream Theater then hired Mike Portnoy to fill in. Fuck a duck.

First off, I’d like to say, Jimmy didn’t have much time in this world to prove himself, the drumming from self titled to nightmare was crazy, Mario is still alive and had the time to show what he can do. This is the song, that Jimmy influenced me the most on, just the double ride part was fucking crazy the first time I heard it. Also the song is about I think trying to say your sorry and it’s almost easy to say it but to not mean it.

Oh if y'all wanna see a drummer that sings, check out Atreyu. Brandon Saller is now only the lead singer but up until last year, he was the drummer and backup vocals but (in my opinion) he was the lead singer the entire time cause his vocals over shadow the original lead.I'd recommend Falling Down to start with. He usually did the choruses and has a very distinct voice.

This is a good song by A7X but didn't show off the Rev if thats what it was going for. Bat Country would have been a better performance if you were trying to even compare him to Mario. A7X as a band has proved they can prevail through ultimate hardships with the death of Sullivan and the vocal strain of the lead singer. But their trademark is by far their guitarists and their singer. They've had three different drummers in the seat after Sullivan passes which leads you to believe that most could follow where he left off technically. I don't know if you could say that with Gojira, meaning that if something happened to Mario, I think that would be it. It's hard to replace that piece. A7X is a good fan band. Mario is a better drummer.

Facts I like A7X more and probably always will but Mario is forsure a better drummer. Most special thing about the Rev was his songwriting and overall composition skills, just a hell of an overall musician. So as a drummer I’d put Mario above Rev forsure but as a musician as a whole I’d rate Rev higher. The people in this thread and in general who think Rev or someone like Joey jordison are better than Mario just drumming wise are crazy. My favorite drummer personally is Brann Dailor of mastodon.

Fellas… I do not think we should declare one winner, I think Mario and Rev should both win, allow me to explain this logic that I have…. The Rev was taken too soon from us, though his talents were already clear, I believe Mario has an edge because he’s had more of a body of work than The Rev to fully blemish. So in this case, why not honor two men that are pioneers and just insane on the kit? That’s just my thought but, as much as I love Jimmy I would have to say Mario this time, but if Rev had the same time Mario has had, I’d vote reverse

Love the Rev, absolutely not the best drummer of the 2000s but one of the best musicians, his songwriting and overall composition skills were special, great composer of music and multi talented instrumentally. Just drumming wise tho Mario is forsure a better drummer than the Rev but I think Rev was definitely the better overall musician. For me my pick for best drummer of the 2000s is Brann Dailor of mastodon, absolutely nobody has a better discog in the 2000s than remission/leviathan/blood mountain/crack the skye, plus every single album they’ve released has been critically acclaimed not just those 4. May not be the best drummer technically in the world but he absolutely is one of the most talented ever because of his songwriting/singing on top of his insane drums, also imo the most fun to listen to, listen to the drums on albums like remission is glorious. y’all gotta do some more mastodon they’re way too under represented by reaction Channels, best discography in metal the last 2 decades. Anyway RIP the Rev, fuckin sweet musician and one of my favorite forsure, left a very good body of work in a short period of time.
