This was my dad's favourite song. The moment it started he'd dad dance to the dance floor calling us "kids" up saying "it's the walk, it's the walk" much to our embarrassment. But as we grew older each time we heard it, we'd do an impersonation of dad and smile. Last year, we had his funeral in the church he was christened and married in. We played this song as the coffin was carried out after the service. In the lyrics it says that there's always a song no matter what happens. Just keep a beat and dance on. Cheers

What a bittersweet story!😊 My dad requested this one as well at his funeral, he does amazing impressions, but could never do Mark or his guitar work, so he has had a love/hate relationship with him from the jump lol I know I'll never hear them without thinking of my father either, so we got that! ❤✌️

IDK about at your dad's service but, the very last song we played at my late wife's was "Regulators" by Warren G and the looks on some of those faces was priceless! If ya know, ya know!

@Jangles we had Dire Straits song Romeo & Juliet as our wedding song... everyone who knew it giggled like we were set up for disaster lol 25 years yesterday, and we only chose it bc it was the first kiss tune. I was his bartender, and how we met, etc, so I preferred that to Ted Nugent for sure hehee I'm sorry to hear of your loss!

Smoky got the meaning right, I think. Mark Knopfler wrote this song about musicians making a living as street buskers in London. “I saw a photograph of a kid playing a guitar in a subway, turning his face to the wall to get a good reverb,” Knopfler said. “When I started playing the guitar, because I didn’t have an amplifier, I’d put the head of the guitar on the arm of a chair and put my head on the guitar to try and get into a loud noise. It kinda reminded me of that, I suppose.” The sports video was for the US market, the original UK video had a young guy performing in an underground station ;)

One thing you missed which plays into the "get knocked down, get back up" theme is that near the end they stopped showing blooper type plays and switched to victorious ones.

One of the most fun videos of the MTV era, the highlights were current at the time. Dire Straits were one of the most accomplished bands of the 80's, and using current cultural references was only one of the reasons why. Excellent musicianship was another, and great song writing was the third.

FYI: the original recipe for coke did contain coca leaves, so there was cocaine but it wasn't refined, so it wasn't like they were dumping a ton of refined cocaine into the mix. In its natural state the effects are similar to coffee, it's only when you refine and concentrate it a 1000 times its natural potency, that you run into problems. The only reason caffeine is legal is because you can't concentrate it like you can coca leaves, but there are parts of the world that you can consume products made with coca leaves, gum, sodas, all sorts of things, they simply set restrictions on the concentration etcetera, for the products made with it.

I think he's just describing life...we go along, we fall, we pick ourselves up and keep going. I like the way they compare the walk of life to a sport. Just like a sport we're all struggling to reach the finish line. I wonder if you guys would like to listen to another song by The Cars. If so then, here's a live performance "The Cars - Let's Go (Midnight Special)" this song is from the second studio album called "Candy-O" and was released in 1979. The album produced two top singles and peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200. All that being said, you might recognize some of the song from a tv show or commercial. Really enjoyed you're fun reaction, thanx so much fellas

And: There is the still the combination of impressive lyrics and the excellent music writing of the Dire Straits! This complaining is rediculous - or just to provoke comments for the YT algorithm? 🤔 You really deserves the thumb down and beeing ignored in the future ...
