I know I'm 2 years late commenting on this vid. Big Tool/Primus follower here (also a bassist mom), and I haven't scrolled all the comments but did anyone let you guys know that Les' voice style is based on the lead singer of The Residents, which Frank Zappa helped to get those guys on the map for underground psychedelic music in San Francisco in the late 60s. But The Residents are originally from Louisiana. Les has spoken from freely in interviews about their musical influences, and The Residents were the ones who inspired them to do something different. You guys crack me up, I enjoy your delight in discovering music that meeds to be remembered. Torched passed; Fish on, fellas🤙🏼 Spiral out🌀

I know Primus is good because I’ve known people who didn’t like them because they don’t like “weirdness for the sake of weirdness” and I’ve also known people who didn’t like them because they don’t like “virtuosity as an end in itself” and the fact that Primus can tick these two vastly different boxes is informative and representative of the strange tone that they manage to create. It’s theatrical, goofy, and not to be taken too seriously, but they clearly have something to say about blue collar America and they say it with flair and with a groove that is all their own.

Primus is still active. They came out with a new album a year or 2 ago, and I saw them tour with Tool maybe 4-5 years ago. Then he has a number of other bands. Two of his main ones are his solo project band, just under his name, “Les Claypool” and his project with Sean Lennon, son of Beatles legend, John Lennon... “The Claypool Lennon Delirium”... but one of my favorite of his projects was “Oysterhead” which comprised of him, Trey Anastasio, guitarist and singer of “Phish” and Stewart Copeland, drummer for “The Police”... sadly they only released one album in 2001... but it’s a damn amazing album!

To my knowledge, Les has never endorsed a bass. He has always used custom basses by Carl Thompson until about 6-7 years ago when he started developing and using his own custom bass dubbed the Pachyderm bass. His most famous CT bass is his 6-string fretless called The Rainbow Bass. And they're from San Francisco.

Les Claypool plays primarily Carl Thompson custom Basses. However he’s been seen playing any kind of bass from a bowed electric upright to his Whamola one string crank top upright that he beats with a drumstick to regular Fender bass and Rickenbacker Basses. He even has a custom bass banjo and steel top bass dobro. He’s a bass madman. An absolute bass wizard from another planet. He’s the God of the Low End! Les Claypool is from Richmond, CA. He now lives in Sebastopol at Rancho Relaxo in Northern Cali SF Bay Area. They sing a lot about the small towns (El Sobrante, Booneville, Petaluma) they grew up in in Northern Cali. There are apparently a lot of hicks and tweekers up there in the towns surrounding SF Bay Area. Believe me if you do a deep dive into Primus, Les sings all about them! I suggest the songs El Sobrante Fortnight and Booneville Stomp. In addition to bass slappin’ Claypool loves to fish for the Ol’ Diamondback Sturgeon! He also makes his own wine called Purple Pachyderm. You can visit the Booze Caboose in Sebastopol to sample. Oh yeah and of course I gotta mention PRIMUS did the South Park theme song and also Claypool went to school with Kirk Hammet and actually tried out for Metallica. They didn’t choose him because he was “too good” at the bass and Claypool even asked to jam on some funk tunes such as the Isley Brothers!

Les Claypool's voice is totally a stylistic choice. I do think the country theme of this song really makes that "accent" predominant. If you listen to Tommy the Cat, yes, that twang is still there..but he also sounds like an auctioneer. Look, they are just different. That's a lot of sound out of 3 people. 3 VERY talented people. It's basically a wall of sound. I completely agree with everyone requesting Tommy the Cat live at Bonaroo. Strap in for some Funk! Primus Sucks!! 👍😀

Haven't seen this mentioned in the comments yet... So, yes, Claypool is from CA but his vocal style is based on the Louisiana accents of The Residents, who Les is a huge fan of. Some of his vocals sound EXACTLY like early Residents' vocals. When Claypool was asked about stealing their vocal style in the Residents' documentary "Theory of Obscurity", he shyly laughed, as he knew he couldn't deny it. There is a great early live video of Prints doing two Residents songs, "Hello Skinny" and "Constantinople" .

First off let's play pool has a myriad of different bands that he's been involved with over the years, most recently the Lennon Claypool delirium where he plays with Sean Lennon, John Lennon's youngest son. And Studio the record as a two piece on the road as a quartet. All the guys in Primus are still the original guys. The only band member that's ever changed has been the drummer, one of the drummers was brought back to the band when Primus released their first new album in years. His name is Jay Lane, that drummer was part of a band called sausage that was a total typical band of Primus before Claypool had found the other members who are now in the band being Tim Alexander on drums and Larry Lalonde on guitar. One of clay pools other big collaborations was with the band Oysterhead, where he played alongside Stewart Copeland from the police on drums and Trey Anastasio from Phish
