From Lyric Interpretations: This song is about suicide. A heart full up like a landfill. A job that slowly kills you. Bruises that won’t heal, captures perfectly how you feel when you’ve finally had enough. A quiet life, a handshake of Carbon Monoxide is not an allegory about pollution or climate change, it’s simply the method in which to make it all stop. I’ve always believed the chorus is essentially a lyrical DNR order. If you find me in time, don’t try and save me, don’t hook me up to machines. No alarms, no surprises. Just let me go. “This is my final fit. My final bellyache” speaks for itself. “Such a pretty house. Such a pretty garden” I’ve always thought as the final hallucination before the brain dies. The hope of an afterlife. A pretty house with a pretty garden. Somewhere peaceful where I can finally rest, free from the pain of the world I’ve left behind.

Agree though i always pictured it a bit more literally with a guy in his car on the drive with the exhaust piped into the car looking out over his house and garden and taking the carbon monoxide handshake.

i took it to be the song for the unsettled soul that is checking out of life because whatever that dream is that you have in the hand, the soul can never be satisfied by it even when you have it. it just does not fulfil that unquiet soul inside, build all the shinny towers of your imagination, the pretty house, the pretty gardens, the pretty life but it still is never enough to quell the malcontent. our free spirit inside can't accept it and so it takes it's last look and checks out.

Radiohead is the culmination or many genres rolled into one. The early stuff was kind of grungy. They morphed into the sound you hear on this song. And have gone more experimental and electronic ever since. But through all of that they still borrow from so many different kinds of music. They can be soft and jazzy one minutes and hard and angry the next. But you are spot on about Thom. He is a master at pulling you in and making you feel whatever he is feeling. Radiohead definitely one of the all time greatest bands. And the reason they don’t get recognized in the mainstream is mostly by choice. They have broken away from the norm and chosen to release their music their own way and not be controlled the way most artists are traditionally.

One of my great regrets is not paying attention to Radiohead back in the 90s. I was too dialed in to Grunge and Britpop. It wasn't until _Kid A_ that I tuned into them and realized what I'd been missing. Which sucks because _OK Computer_ is their _magnum opus_ and to have been into them when it came out would've been something else. And my list would be Thom Yorke Maynard James Keenan Eddie Vedder Trent Reznor Laine Staley Billy Corgan would be on the list but I'm not sure if he's more iconic than representative.
