I went to see Radiohead on this tour when they played Manchester. Before the last song, Thom read out a letter from a fan who was in the audience. This letter said how the girl and her brother had gone to see Radiohead on their previous tour, the crowd cheered. Thom continued, the show the girl had watched was made more special because two days later, her brother died. The crowd fell silent. I mean silent. You could hear a pin drop. The letter concluded, the fan was really looking forward to seeing the band again and that although her brother could not be there in body, he would be there in spirit. Thom folded the letter, put it in his back pocket and the band ended the night with Street Spirit. They played the song like they knew it was the most important thing that the girl would ever hear. It was perfect. They finished the song, put down their instruments and walked off stage. The crowd had no idea what to do. Cheer, cry, remain silent. When the lights went up, I would say 75% of the audience, including the girl I was with, where in floods of tears. I have seen literally thousands of bands play live and that one song remains the most memorable thing I have ever seen any band do.

Fuck, I wouldn't be able to perform this song after reading a letter like that to the audience. I'd just break down in the middle.

Exactly bro this was basically me for my entire life (I’m 29) until like a year ago when I finally decided to properly check them out. I always figured they were just a decent rock band with several singles like Creep and Karma Police…had no idea that every single song they ever recorded is amazing lmao

It always frustrates me when reactors' only experience of Radiohead is Creep. I've seen them just react to that and move on, thinking they know what Radiohead is about. It was an early hit, but it's true, it's not one of their best, and even Radiohead didn't like to play it for a long time because they didn't feel it represented their sound anymore.

I view creep as a great entry point to the band , I slowly delved into their entire discography over many months and grew to love them more n more. Can honestly say I enjoy at least 50 of their tracks at this points, I also own the majority of their albums on vinyl now.

Kind of similar to Pink Floyd and their song Money. Although they had a few other songs that get radio air play. I honestly haven't heard anything else played by Radiohead on the radio other than Creep. My favorite album of their's is either Kid A or Amnesiac

"Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; it's biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack… Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack. I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song." Thom Yorke

Fantastic choice in Radiohead song, it's been one of my favourites since it debuted (I used to watch music videos religiously in the 80's and 90's). They manage to make music that is both tragic and beautiful sounding in a way that's unparalleled.

Wow i never gave radiohead a chance growing up but wow. This is perfect music for relaxing in a dark room on your beanbag. What you said at the end about death hits home more than you know. You cant change it vut accept it and enjoy what time you have left. But if you are given a new lease on life that gives you inspiration to enjoy as much as possible daily. Still trying to break out of my introvert life to try new things in life i would have never done with a morbid mentality i had for years. Some will know what im talking about, most wont.

Great review! So glad you reacted to Street Spirit! I'm from England and remember hearing this song on the radio and being blown away. Off of the brilliant The Bends album which I bought straight away, then went into their Pablo Honey album. I rally haven't got a clue how this band had escaped me until that point. Seen them live several times since, they are epic in the flesh. One recommendation from their huge catalogue: Lucky - live Glastonbury 2003. It's how the song goes from 0 to 100mph seamlessly.

Music is on my top four favorite drugs of all times. I have a plethora of reasons why I like music every day. One reason is I have tinnitus in both ears. So the music prevents me from hearing my tinnitus when I have on my headphones. This is another reason like to listen/watch rappers react music.😊 Because it's soothing to my ears And helps me forget about my tinnitus as well. But I've been high on music since I was a kid.. I think of Radiohead as alternative/innovative. Their first album "Pablo Honey" they started from a batch of influences like 1980s noise rock/punk, The Pixies, R.E.M., etc. (basically, from the "first" alternative wave before grunge hit). But as each album proceeds, Radiohead evolved to the point by their third album OK Computer, and especially with 'Kid A" and 'In Rainbows' they were no longer taking influences from past alt bands and were themselves establishing where alternative music was going for others to keep up with. One thing to note is guitarist Jonny Greenwood is a great music composer (composed music for many films) and plays like 10 different instruments, so Radiohead's string arrangements and synthesizers are always on point!

Love it when you guys get back to Radiohead. This one is an absolute classic. You can't go wrong with any of the songs from "The Bends" or "OK Computer" with their 90's era material. Even their debut "Pablo Honey" had great songs other than "Creep". They became much more experimental post 2000 and that's not a bad thing. They have always evolved and tried to do something different with every album like Bowie used to. "National Anthem", "Exit Music (For a Film)", "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Just", "Nice Dream"...the list goes on dudes.

12:35 the cracked eggs and dead birds screaming as they fight for life is a metaphor for the beginning and end of life, like a baby crying during it's birth and a man screaming while nearing death. the fighting part would be the chicks fighting to hatch from the eggs and the dead birds would be fighting for survival. fading in, contrast to fading out (the full cycle of life)

I'm a new sub so I dunno what you've heard already but my future suggestions are "Exit Music (For A Film)" and/or "Talk Show Host", "Weird Fishes", "Jigsaw Falling Into Place", "Paranoid Android"

Art Rock and Alternative Rock is what Radiohead is mostly called. But they mix things up and go into a more experimental or electronic music on some albums. Radiohead music is Radiohead music. I immediately know it's Radiohead.
