As a German-speaking 53-year-old Austrian, I saw Rammstein in her early days in 1995 or 1996. Back then we were all sure that they would become superstars in German-speaking countries, but I would never have believed that they would become international superstars. no matter whether in Russia, Japan or the USA, everyone sings along with the German text even if it is not understood. The band clearly owes its success to Till Lindemann who is incredibly charismatic.

Rammstein's one of the few bands in the world who can take a creepy ass German fairy tale/children's show about the Sandman and make it both more ominous and beautiful.
@kardy123 жыл бұрын
The song is about the terrors of childhood nightmares. It also makes makes references to an old German children’s TV show called Der Sandmann, and the opening line of the chorus (Nun, liebe kinder, gebt fein Acht. Ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht. Or: Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you) is taken from the show. The show used to have a bedtime story for kids, and this song is essentially about a nightmarish variant of the sandman. But Rammstein lyrics always have different ways to interpret them. Some interpret the lyrics to be a reference to abuse linked to mind control or brainwashing, some that Till’s character suffered from these nightmares and that it’s about adults being unable to protect children from their nightmares, and I’m sure there are many more.
@godlessfornicater3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! I interpreted it as childhood abuse BY adults and the video being these grown children being unable to free themselves of these traumas. Which is why he killed the elderly woman and them burning the place down.

It's one of the aspects I find most interesting, as I speak only a little bit of German but read the translated lyrics; yes they have double meanings and word-play and that makes the songs worth listening to repeatedly, with fresh perspectives. What a great band Rammstein is.

You have incredible insight! Till was a championship swimmer and grew up at a boarding school. He spent most of his day in a pool (long distance swimming). He was going to the 1980 Olympics when he had an injury that ended his swimming career. He was smaller at the time and had rosacea and acne and was horribly bullied.

It is also good to remember, that he lived in Eastern Germany. As someone, who lived under the same regime for a time of my childhood, you can't even immagine how it was like. Even me - a six year old, who did not get what was politically going on - felt the fear and paranoia. How we kids would be told not to menton this or that to our peers, how praying was done in secret and anything western was literally contraband, coppied to spread to like minded people. And putting on a mask of happy families in public, never knowing who might been push to betray you or else their family would suffer.

I have been to that building and have walked around it. So R+ didn't burn it down. It is spooky. Till represents the nightmare and dreams of children. He steals their tears whilst they sleep. The lady is defending the children from Till. You see her from a young nurse maid to old lady, still trying to protect them. That is why she ages in the video. The children in the cage/bath are the band and you see thar they also age and finally escape their prison/nightmare and burn the building to the ground.

This is my favourite song by them......why you say? Oliver Riedel on bass shines in this one. This might be even better live,as you hear how he pounds that bass. Oliver usually is very anonymous on most of theyr other hits. The other guys tends to steal all the attention. And i have always been weak for a heavy present bassline throughout songs. The song and video is a metaphor about nightmares and fears. The text deals with the essence of fear, personified as a creature that injects the tears of children into its veins. Actually it is a dead body, but the fear of the people makes his "heart burn" so it brings it to life. The video goes in a similar direction. The orphanage with the imprisoned children is a metaphor for the people's fears. Everbody is in some way trapped by his own fears. The children grow up, but these are the same fears that haunt them as adults. Only in the end when the prisoners face their fears, do they succeed in escaping their prison. In the end, they can defeat Till and rob him of his power, who embodies the essence of fear in the video.

the school seems like a metaphor, an insinuation for not having a choice. us regular people dont really get to choose your school, its just a thing you do. a bit like you dont get to choose your family either, its just a thing in your life you have to cope with. i see this as a metaphor for domestic violence and how the memories of it can fuck you up if you dont let go. 1) the kids that wore "the mask" kind of thing. many in abusive situation tend to wear a facade, you know the kind of "everything is peachy" kind of thing 2) till vs the woman in different ages and his actions towards her = she knew, she always knew but could not stop the madness. didnt dare to. 3) the dreams of the children portray a sense of being trapped. the faceless captor stands for not understanding what is happening 4) the kid who did the throat slit gesture, he was corrupted by Till. if you´ve grown up in circumstances like these, your morality might be a bit wonky. 5) the broken one (the one in the surgical table) understood everything (she could never wear a "i´m happy" -face ) and gave the children a glimpse of the real world and how things are for real. 6) now seeing how things are, many children got help (the woman in white) and got out of the circumstances. those who didnt, broke free after removing the "i´m fine" face. what was under the "mask" was a complete mess, but they got out. 7) the kids got out, but the "freed" adults burned the entire house down. 8) in the end, tills own demons ate him alive way before the house was all in flames.

The song's lyrics involve a narrator describing the terrors of nightmares. The opening line of the song's intro and chorus (Nun, liebe Kinder, gebt fein Acht. Ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht, meaning "Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you") is taken from the German children's TV show Sandmännchen ("Mr Sandman"), which provided children with a bedtime story. The song's narrator appears as a darker version of the character.
@metalrulezU3 жыл бұрын
The premise of the song is that its being song from a night terror or sandman if you will, basically his heart burns because he doesn't want to scare these children but is compelled for some reason. the video you can see the children getting older showing how our nightmares sometimes stay with us until the end, very cool idea for a song and different to most writers train of thought :) not to mention the music is banging xD

Definitely watch the piano version. Now this is very technical, but: the science of esthetics deals with four fundamental categories: the beautiful, the ugly, the sublime and the grotesque. In no real art will you ever get any of them in pure form, it's always a mix of two or more. But essentially if you overdo the sublime, you slip into grotesque (think of Galadriel's transformations in the Lord of The Rings as an example of that), therefore grotesque is somewhere between sublime and ugly. You get what I mean.
