The song was about the pressure they felt to get a new album out when they weren't ready following Paul's death. Also that was my favourite ever guessing game at the start 😂

🦋This Is Definitely One Of My Favorites. This Was Slipknot's Tribute/Heartfelt Goodbye. After they lost their bassist Paul Gray in 2010 after he accidentally overdosed. In An Interview Corey described that moment on stage. Looking out at the millions of fans. "This is the melancholy look at how people wanted us to deal with Paul's death, and listening to that song I see us on a stage, just in silence, and millions of people looking at us with ideas of how we should grieve already set in their minds, and maybe that's completely opposite with how we were trying to deal with it, and lyrically it's us saying, 'Look, we're the only ones that really understand what we're going through. You can expect us to break down and cry, but at some point we have to stand back up.'"- RIP Paul May He Forever Live On Through The Music He Gave Us All.

Every Saturday Hollywood has a new favorite 😁. Corey sang a song called “From Can to Can’t” on Dave Grohl’s Sound City album - it goes with the documentary. There is a video on KZbin of him working on the vocals. Butch Vig is at the board, and you can see he is astounded by Corey’s voice. Butch has been a producer for decades as well as being a member of the band Garbage. He compliments Corey effusively when he finishes singing the song.

You guys should check out the tribute song they dedicated right after Paul's death, "Till We Die". It was recorded with Paul for the All Hope is Gone album as a bonus track, but after Paul's death they dedicated it to him. They created a music video for it and they close all their concerts with this song in honor of him.

One of the things I love about Slipknot is they don't let the label tell them what and how to write since the beginning. After their first album some management types at the label suggested that they make an album full of Wait and Bleed type songs (because it was the most radio friendly song on the album) so they followed their self titled album with Iowa. I freaking love that!

The Grey chapter is an album dedicated to the late Paul Grey (hence the album name) and the song Custer is a metaphor comparing slipknot to Custer basically saying f you to all the people that doubted slipknots ability to continue on without Paul and Joey

Alot of these songs would have something to do with the death of Paul Gray so there would be a lot if underlining meaning behind the words. I feel like each Slipknot album has the emotions of how they were feeling hence the different styles of songs. Nothing beats putting on the full discography on a mix because you go from vermilion to scissors to spit it out to this song and it's totally different. There was a saddness to a lot of these songs not so much the mental depression from scissors.

This song is so underrated. The Gray Chapter is definitely one of my favourite albums of all time. This album is mainly written by Clown, Jim and Corey but as far as I know Jim wrote demos. This guy is a genius, that's why both Slipknot and Stone Sour albums have so great guitar parts.

May this be another chance to suggest y'all to react to Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine and Ride as a gateway into the wonderful world of beautiful noise a.k.a. shoegaze. Hope y'all will get there! ________ Well this was unexpected. The weird 'speak n spell' (just dated myself) voice in the song was most likely more Craig (pinhead mask). He usually adds the weird little noises and voices. If you had to pick a more "commercial" album, I would say probably go with All Hope Is Gone, the fourth album. The thing you have to keep in mind with songs from the Gray Chapter is that this is the album after Paul's death and Joey's departure so a lot of the songs are in a way dealing with the loss of thier brother. To me, I always felt like this song was kind of aimed at people who want to hold on to negative things. The reason for that is lyrics like "In these diamonds, we're left with colored glass" and "if I'm not broken, break me down." It's about how that negative energy can affect you when you are around those people who only want to focus on the negative things cause rain is what they want. You know bad things happen to everyone and there are people who can get over it and move on and people who just dwell on it. So to me this song has always felt like a way to say let go. Don't dwell on things. I could be totally off but that's what I get from it.

I always check out your Slipknot Saturday videos because I love watching you guys find and genuinely enjoy their music. Man smokey was struggling out the gate. Happens to the best of us bro lmao. (And after watching, I think I would also go as far to say that gray chapter is Hollywood's favorite album because everytime we hear one off of this album, he often says it's his favorite thus far.) This song is the last song off of .5 and I think it was a great atmospheric song to finish it off. It felt like an accumulation of the pain, sorrow, and anger throughout this time period for them and it just blends together to make this. You could really hear it Corey's voice and how the song/instruments are almost plodding at parts but in the best way. And that middle section..."if I'm not broken, break me down so I will never feel alone again" And as for their commercial breakthrough, that would probably be vol.3. They started out with their 2 heaviest albums that gained them notoriety and then their sound shifted after their drastic changes in lifestyle. It brought us stuff like duality which was *the* insanely popular song of theirs for a long time and still is, so that was really what cemented them as radio hits, just as long as the band felt like making a radio hit.

I’ve never bothered to deep dive into the lyrics or interviews with the band to try and understand the real meaning behind songs, but I’ve always felt like there was this underlying theme of slipknot taking over the world from the undercity up. They’ve always felt like some sort of heavy-metal prophets, like they are taking control of and taking responsibility for the rest of us, for our sake, for our own good -Being martyrs for “our” cause. The song has always made me feel like perhaps we as a society had gone dormant and stopped fighting against the oppression, and slipknot is somehow apologizing for not being here to stand against the enemy -but never again. “Their” cities, will never fall to the oppressor again, will never blindly accept the oppressor as a just and deserving ruler. Sometimes it feels political, and other times like a moral struggle while they yell at God. Whatever they’re singing about -it creates great imagery and inspiration when I’m making artwork, and they establish such a mood that it dunks you deep into a whole other world. I think it’s fascinating that through the same tools as many other metal bands, they can create such a different setting for your mind to wander. True artists
