Only good and deep if coupled with theistic hope, otherwise, it's just shallow nihilism and basic modernism. Nothing good or impressive about that. I still can't figure out where TOOL stands as many of their songs appear to be extremely nihilistic, atheistic, and modernist, but then other songs and many lyrical sections disagree with that. I'm leaning more towards 'spiritual nihilism', which makes them very confused and contractionary as it doesn't make sense or have any grounding in deeper reality. Maybe some hardcore TOOL fans can tell me if they are fundamentally Christian/Western in nature and content or just intelligent nihilists because I can't tell (note: I have not heard all their songs, so maybe that's part of it). Thanks.
@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams4 жыл бұрын
@@TheClassicWorld Not nihilists. They explore a range of these topics because it makes for fun subject matter, and this particular song is insulting the average modern human's addiction to negative news and violence, by being sung through the perspective of one such individual. They're actually more spiritual than anything else, taking most of their influence from Buddhist and Hindu spirituality.

Front to back, AEnima is their best album. And when you listen to it, you have to remind yourself that this was released in 96! There was nothing that could even come close to this in 96. They have been so far ahead of everyone else since day 1. I saw them live in 92 and had never heard of them. Tool was the second band of like 10 bands at lololapalooza. I was there to see Rage, Chilli Peppers, Ministry, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Ice Cube. But when Tool started playing, it was obvious they were special.I bought Opiate and Untertow, and they have been my favorite band ever since, hands down. So I have had the displeasure of all the waiting periods in between albums....brutal

I still remember the first time I heard this. Bought the CD the day it came out...left the mall in Santa Rosa...opened it while walking through the parking lot on the way to my car. As soon as i got in the car I popped it in the CD player...FUCKING WOW. I almost had to pull over on highway 101 on my way home. THEN...before I could even start to try to catch my breath and mentally digest Vicarious...BOOM! That OTHERWORLDLY fucking RIFF that starts off JAMBI kicks in. Even though i had been a tool fan for over 10 years at that point and had all of their albums (except Salival...still don't have that as of yet) ... and had seen them live and knew the lyrics to 90% of their songs by heart and...just judging from their track record and the caliber of everything else they had ever put out i already fully EXPECTED 10,000 Days to be amazing before I ever put it in the CD player in my car. HOWEVER...despite all of this...I WAS NOT READY for what I was about to experience. Vicarious standing alone...BY ITSELF is OVERWHELMING and it is one of the top 3 most EPIC songs... if not THE MOST EPIC song i have ever heard in my life. I will never forget where I was and what I was doing the first time i heard Vicarious. There are only about 5 songs EVER that i can say that about. The one besides Vicarious that comes to mind is Master of Puppets...but experiencing VICARIOUS for the first time in all it's GLORY...and then a second and half later having JAMBI split my face open right from the first riff? I don't know if there is a better one two punch to start off an album in music history. Funny cause I already referenced this but now that I think about it...it's the best one two punch to start off an album I can remember since the mid 80's... the first time i heard the last notes BATTERY fade out and MASTER of PUPPETS kick in. To me the opening combo on the 10,000 Days album with Vicarious followed by Jambi is on the same level as the opening combo of Battery Master of Puppets on the MOP album...and no other opening 2 songs on any other album that I have ever heard even come CLOSE to those 2

About the lyrics in this song, it's always hit me deep because I've always agreed with the message of this song. You turn on the news and day in, day out, it's nothing but trauma and tragedy and death and destruction. It's so depressing and a constant reminder that evil shit goes on in the world all the time. The universe doesn't care - bad stuff happens all the time. But we as a society are literally addicted to watching this stuff and keep the news teams and the media rolling. And then you look at all the musicians and celebrities that have had their lives ruined and in some cases committed suicide because of constant media pressure and you realise that it all becomes a vicious circle - now that musician that killed themselves because of the media, and suffered through us having such a need to know every tiny little detail about their personal life and in the process, stripping them of their privacy, has now died which itself will become a news story and the cycle starts all over again. Think about all the talented musicians which took their lives for this very reason - Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Layne Stanley.... The list is endless. A self-fulfilling prophecy. And to this day, 15 years after it came out, this happens now more than ever. We as humans have an odd desire to seek out the tragedy of others to force ourselves to appreciate the good things we have in life. If your own brother dies, it's a tragedy. But it's a totally different story if it's someone you don't know. Then it's not a tragedy - now its entertainment. Which is pretty sick if you think about it. It makes me think about people who look up to serial killers and enjoy watching murder documentaries. This weird fascination with death and horror that we all have. Wouldn't it be nice if, for once, we actually heard some good news for a change? You've probably thought that to yourself from time to time - Well, we're the reason why. The media gives us more of what we want. They wouldn't show that shit all the time if people didn't watch it. We only have ourselves to blame. That's just my two cents. I could go on and on even more lol but I'll leave it at that for now. Definitely a very thought-provoking song, like all tool songs are.

The media always has something bad to say about drugs too. Why can't something positive come from doing drugs, "Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively there's no such thing as death life is only a dream and we are just an imagination of ourselves, here's Tom with the weather."

The opening song to 10,000 Days. Hell of a song and very relevant even to this day. Maynard is actually well known in the music industry of having a unique voice and range . Hence the reason why you can find him doing back vocals on song by Rage against the Machine,Deftones,etc.
