Jambi is named after the genie in the show "Pee Wee's Playhouse". I believe Danny Carey thought the bass riff sounded like the chant the genie would do, so they named the song after that character and made the song about wishing for things. An unusual way to create a song but very interesting.

Yeah... it’s about his son, “Devo H. Keenan”... this can basically be seen as H. Part 2... he’s saying he got everything he wanted and was living large in the rockstar lifestyle... living like a king... a sultan... but after his son was born, it put his life in perspective, and really changed him for the better... and he’s saying that he’d give it all away if he were given the choice between all that decadence and success and his son’s life and his relationship with him... pretty straight forward when you listen to it over with this perspective.

The vocals with effects are actually adam jones and are from a talkbox. he sends his voice through his guitar to modulate it that way.
@joechurch74 жыл бұрын
Dimi Devos talk box originally invented by Bob Heil for Joe Walsh to use on the song Rocky Mountain Way then Peter Frampton got his hands on it and used it on the Frampton comes alive album. David Gilmour was a huge influence of Adams and used it on the animals album particularly on the song pigs. If you listen to Gilmore solo on dogs it has a mirror template to Adams solo on descending. The talk box is actually taking your guitar sound running it through a plastic tube into your mouth then using the shape of your mouth to modulate the guitar sound back into a microphone. Pretty easy to build by yourself that’s what I did they are fun to use. I’m fond of running my theremin through the Talk box

From song facts: “"Jambi" is an Indonesian Province in Sumatra, which was once part of a powerful kingdom with a rich sultan who lived an opulent lifestyle. The setting reinforces the message that family and friends are more important than wealth... which is a great interpretation, but it turns out that this song was inspired by the kid's TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse, which had a genie character named Jambi. At a drum clinic in Kansas, Tool Drummer Danny Carey explained that when Justin Chancellor came up with the bass part, Carey thought it sounded like Jambi's chant on the show: "Mekka-lekka hi mekka hiney ho." Lead singer Maynard James Keenan wrote lyrics about a genie and making wishes, and the song was born. While it could appear to have deeper meaning, Carey claims it was simply a joke.” I would add that I personally think that the song takes on multiple meanings, as per usual with Tool, in that the rhythm was joking named after the chant from Pee-Wee’s Jambi who made wishes AND the lyrics also reference the power of having material things (as per a king) while desiring more meaningful things like relationships, mixing the two meanings of the word Jambi as inspiration for Maynard’s personal perspective and creative outlet.

A little Tool Trivia-- Jambi was the name of the genie on Pee wee's Playhouse ("Meka-Leka-High-Meka-Hiney-Ho") on which Adam Jones got one of his earliest SPX production gigs. And according to Maynard, like much of 10000 Days, has to do with the death of his mother and wishing for another minute with her. Also, I believe this was Adam's first experiment with his Frampton-esque Talk Box.

I truly truly LOVE you guys. And I completely agree with @myname5918 that Parabol/Parabola MUST be listened to and reviewed. One of the very best songs f-intro and songs- that I heard live in concert. No doubt. Love you guys! Laura from Boston ❤

I finally got to see Tool live last year at Welcome to Rockville 3 day metal/rock fear in Jacksonville, FL. Tool headlined the last show on the 3rd day with a little over 100k people I was able to get about 15' from the stage. It was a childhood dream dream come true!!

i've been waiting for this... For me this song is about our growth and experiences and how we see ourselves in the past.

That’s one reason I’ve loved Tool since the beginning. They don’t define it, because they don’t want to prove anyone’s perception as “wrong”.

A letter to his son Devo. Written shortly after his birth. F yes!

You sure? I thought Devo was born in maybe 1994. This album came out 2006. Either way, great song

Pretty sure devo is alot older seeing as he toured and played strings in Billy howerdels other band

Not sure when it was written but, this is to his son.

That was H. Devo H. Keenan. This is likely now that he’s gotten older to see him grow up.

Written date occurs much earlier than album release.
