I'm a mom, and the first time I took my daughter to see Tool she was about 16... maybe 17. When I told her I was able to get tickets, (18th row floor seats) she started shaking, the hair in her arms stood up on end, and she instantly had tears in her eyes, and the biggest smile I've ever seen. We both cried. It was at that moment, I knew, I'd gotten parenting right. 🤘🤘🤘 And hey, 30 some years to discover Tool? Better late than never! It never gets old watching a new love and fascination blossom and grow when someone first discovers the magic that is Tool. Love at the videos, keep swinging on the spiral guys! 🤘❤

Judith Marie was paralyzed for around 10,000 days, about 27 years. Hence the album name and song name. The Patient can be taken as a double entendre. Its about Judith being the patient in that she is paralyzed and dies. Maynard is the patient one because he never gives up on his mother. He displays as much patience as she does, even while she is actually the patient. Incredible song, my top 5 Tool for a long long time. Much love guys.

That "i still may" gasp.. gets me every time. This song is though like almost every song for them.. open for you to interpret, and at the same time you are open, vulnerable, and there to it aswell to be taken apart if you give yourself in. For me, its an inspirational song, like Lateralus for example, it reminds you to be patient, and wait whatever out, what takes time, to heal, or simply just to wait for something as long as you have to, BUT at the same time it reminds you that you can quit anytime. You may walk away if its "bad" for you, uncomfortable, and you are not inspired in a positive way anymore. When it isnt worth it anymore. Nothing is a must, and sometimes letting go is something that requires the most patience. You'll have to start over, all the time gone in vain. Patience, and holding on. You can take a whole lot with you from this track, if you take away whats there for you. But one thing is shure, that anyone can find something for him/herself between those lines

I’ve actually never considered his mother to be an inspiration for this song. She very well may be, but to me this song has always been about perseverance in the face of a difficult task or journey. Even though the thing is very difficult and causes pain and consternation, the rewards in the end are worth it. He has to keep reminding himself that it’s worth it so that he doesn’t choose to walk away.

@@RobertWilliams-ph9rn that song is about not limiting yourself when creating new art, which is the general point of the song to reach out and embrace the random, push the envelope watch it bend etc. The other songs are connected in that they're about aspects of life that could be holding you back like grudges in the grudge or not living in the moment in parabola or learning to communicate in schism or reflecting on past mistakes in reflection and in the patient staying resolute and strong on the path you have chosen, but I don't think those lyrics from the song lateralus define the album as a whole.

i THINK one of the greates things about music, and ofcoruse about Tool is that, Music Can convert into Lyrics and the lyrics can transform and get so involved in the music. I have seen myself driving my car after a long day, returning home ... Listening to this, and taking so much coherence with the different situations in my life. Perhaps in his time, the car and this album were the only times where I could let go of everything (except the steering wheel) and cry quietly. Think about it, it's like going to alcoholics anonymous, you don't need to know and cry the grief of the other hugging him, nor does he need to vent knowing your pain. They only share the feeling at different times of the same frequency. GReat Reaction Guys, as usual.

Like many others, I too have a personal connection with The Patient. It's become this mantra of sorts. Whenevr I feel down, tired, about to break down, I resort to this song in order to endure. I first listened to it when I was 15yo, back in 2001. Patience is a virtue as long as there is a reward at the end of the struggle, although que do not recognize such reward right away.

The bendy ass sound at the beginning is the bass. Justin is tapping the notes and quickly rotating his tone nob in time to achieve an almost-whammy effect that is actually pretty innovative. It’s what makes it sound like “wtf is that”

Personally I wouldn't necessarily think this is part of the Judith Chronicles. It could possibly be grouped into it, I could see where people could interpret it that way. I think, however, it's too broad and can be interpreted in many ways... not directly to her. My take anyway. 1 Jimmy 2 Judith (APC) 3 Wings for Marie 1&2 (10,000 days) 4 Horizons (Puscifer) Also great reaction as always, love ya guys!✌ Oh... also I think you should do all the songs about Judith the same day, not a week apart for each.

Definitely always took this song as a dual perspective like y'all did. The "giving blood" i always thought meant her physically giving blood and him giving "blood, sweat, and tears." As for faith, she had faith in God but he had faith that she would maybe one day feel better. She was the patient while he patiently waited. It's really a beautiful song from this idea of an outsider seeing this mother-son relationship. That chorus is exactly what you thought. He would have given up if there was no hope, if there was no love. Again, perhaps on both sides they clung to each other's love and support. Without which they would have just given in.
