Aust Recon did this break contact drill somewhat differently some time ago. Prior to the Gulf War the majority of the training was done in jungle/rainforest/woodland settings, not the environment of Iraq or much of Afghanistan. Additionally, Recon these days is heavily mechanised and therefore the drill is set toward breaking left or right quickly whereas before it was all about opening up distance as a priority so that breaking left or right was done dry firing so as deny the enemy your position.

Max Headroom, Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures have definitely evolved over time and I think the evolution is accelerated even further now that we have modern technology to conduct detailed after action reviews with video footage on the ground. A good acronym for determining how to implement tactics is OCOKA. Using the principles of OCOKA, one can take this drill or any other and apply it to different types of terrain. The underlying principle of a break contact drill will remain the same though, that is to keep a volume of fire to distract from the maneuver element (in this case one person).

@Captain Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock Check out the USMC's LARs, and the ADF are literally adopting Boxers in a CRV role. It's the intent, whether or not it works is another question, though.

What happens when one of them gets hit?

This actually depends on a number of factors and would depend on how the team trains. For example, if the person who is laying down suppressive fire is hit, then the next man up might move to recover the injured team member while the man behind him takes up suppressive fire.
