What you can do with the werthers originals is get 2-3 of them and dissolve them in a cup of hot water. From there, add the coffee and a quarter of the condensed milk. Then, have the jam sandwiches with the coffee. Best 5-star coffee you'll get in the field. Now, with the hearty beef stew. First, you want to make the mashed potato and mix the cheese into it with salt and pepper and Tabasco sauce. Layer the potato on the bottom of your cups canteen and lay the heated hearty beef stew over top. If you get crackers in your rat pack, break them over top. You just made a field Shepard's pie. Also, 5 star.

In the Aussie Army Cadet Corps we had rat packs on some of the camps. At annual camp we lived off the 10 man ration packs and some fresh fruit for 9 days while we camped on an army base. We were told (warned) the cheese stops you up and the chocy helps you go so be wise and use them as needed... When we got home and went back to school a teenager got dared to eat 5 packs of the chocy at school. An hour later he raced from one end of the playground to the loo and was there until his parents had to transport him home after school ended. The next day he had to help the school cleaners sweep and mop the toilets, as a reminder to think thru consequences before taking a dare.

Like most things with Rat packs, if you have the time to prepare it all, you really can make wonderful meals... or if tactically you can eat it all cold, sadly. Ration packs have a shelf live of 7 years. The trick with the large chocolate bar if its 'white' is to turn it into a hot chocolate drink, in your cup canteen is to bring water to the boil and place the chocolate bar into the water until it melts. Yes the peach in syrup usually goes off, the acid in the syrup dissolves the lining of the tin. Lastly remember the difference between the 'old' Vietnam ration packs and the new ration packs - is that the new packs are actually eatable. We would eat the main meal at night for two reasons. 1. if its dark you cant see what your eating and 2. you usually had a blocked nose... so you couldn't smell it either.
@dotcassilles1488

Had the old style ration packs in the Aussie army cadets. We were just glad to have food to eat at the end of the day. Also had them when we did search and rescue. You used to be able to buy them at the army disposal and surplus stores. At annual camp we had the 10 man 24hr ration packs and one year the "cook" loved pepper. We had extra rations of water supplied after we got one of the chain of command to eat a plate without a drink. He bet he could eat the plate and go back for seconds in 5 minutes. If he won we would have an extra night march. If he lost the command would do all of that nights washing up. He lost and never lived it down.

There's a reason why the tube of sweetened condensed milk smelled/tasted like caramel. It's literally one step from being milk caramel. You can use the stovetop, oven or even a microwave oven to cook it into a Dulce de Leche caramel.

There used to be a can or tube of "coffee & milk" in the shops here in SE Australia. It was made from sweetened condensed milk and coffee powder. We would buy it to carry when we had a search and rescue mission, light enough to carry in our pockets and we would use it to make coffee with the hot water from a Thermos. Also caramel made with sweetened condensed milk is the best. In cadets we had little hexi stoves that were to sit out kidney cup on to warm stuff up in. We would put water in the metal cup and sit the tube of condensed milk in it. Then watch carefully, checking the tube to see how hot it got. Let it heat for 15 minutes or so. Let it cool down. Sit and squeeze or suck the caramel out of the tube. It goes even darker caramel and tastes almost the same as the old "Jersey caramel" lollies.

A mate of mine, his dad was ex SAS (australian special forces). they never had a regular can opener in their kitchen, always their fold out spoon style things. took me about 5 minutes to open a can of tomatos with. Then John showed me how it was done, went at it like a buzzsaw, and had the next can open in about 10s. there is a knack to it, but hugely effective, even tho he had been out of the service for 10 years, it is a superior can opener if your good at it. I have to wonder if the peaches are deliberately allowed to ferment to get around the rum ration... a form of pruno.

An Aussie rat pack can be re-loved by the quartermaster with the appropriate qualification a number of times. You definitely had an old one, that had most likely spent some time in the sun under a tarp on exercise, the peaches are a good giveaway. Fun fact, you can make alcohol out of the peaches and sugar depending on how long your on ex for and have the right kinda vehicle to transport your containers..

So when you said you liked Vegemite (based by the way my mexican mate likes it too) it sounded like you said hooroo which means goodbye in our broken english

We used to do what we called 'break down rats'. So we'd get issued rations hopefully before going into the field and could pull them apart and discard what we didnt want and supplement with 'jack rats', ie just store bought stuff you brought with you. That way you werent careying stuff you werent going to eat.

Nonononono... when a can is bulging like that, it's a no-go! It means it's spoiled. The chocolate turning white means it has "bloomed"... it's part of the chocolate coming to the surface surface due to heat or age.

The advantage of Aussie ration dinner meals is that you probably be eating them in the dark. 😂😂

Many Americans struggle with Lamb. It's surprisingly not common in the US, except in a few small and specific regions. It's a very high fat meat and the fat tastes grassy or as some say, like poo. It's really a very strong flavour, dependent on the age of the lamb and the diet of the sheep before it was culled. To me that Lamb Curry would be great. British reviewers tend to love it, US not so much.

How have you never tried muesli? It’s granola with dried fruits, you add milk to it and have it as cereal.

You have to eat the mash hot and melt the cheese into it. It's delicious. We also have 5 man ration packs with some good stuff in them if you can get your hands on one

The rations pack with the Shrewsbury jam biscuits are worth it. I don’t care if that’s the only thing I eat all day it makes the day well worth it.

I think if you made a large frame of all of spoons/sporks you get. Draw the flag of the country, ep #, what main item you ate (or ion back) and hand them up but as a twist, move them around at the end or beginning of an episode in order if your favorite. Cheesy but cool. ❤
