Interesting that it isn't a "numbers matching" car but still valued/sold for over a million dollars (two million I believe) ...I had a buddy in H.S. in '73/'74 who owned a '70 Nova with an L88 that him and his Dad had blueprinted and installed in the Nova...it had an M22 transmission and 4.88:1 rear gear in a 12 bolt rear end. I drove it a few times, it was the fastest car in Titusville Florida at the time. If he wanted to the car would do such epic burnouts it would leave rubber on the car's windshield behind him at stop lights and would burn the biggest series 60's available at the time in all 4 gears. With slicks it would run 11.0's.

Can anyone confirm the L88 made a compression ratio change very early on due to trannys or clutches being blown ?? I believe gm also changed the warranty to 90 days on the drive train........ can anyone shed some light on these questions I have.... I recall a first phase and second phase terminology being used when they made this change
@thud9797
@thud9797 4 ай бұрын
Never heard of that clutch or tranny story. The original L88 had a different cam and closed chamber heads. During 1969 production they went to a second design head and also changed the camshaft. The new heads lowered compression from 12.5 to 12 but this was done to increase power not lower it.

@@johnmartinelli5511 Ok Mr. Rocket Scientist, when you come back to reality, physics remains constant. If the L-88 did have more hp than the 427 in the AC cobra, if wouldn't make up for the curb weight difference........you probably don't even own a corvette......just a keyboard warrior in your mom's basement1

Gonna be 75 soon, a few vettes, Z28'S, REMEMBER LOOKING at one new 427 sc cobra side oiler in 1967 before entering the military. Chevy made the grandsports to conquer the vettes during the vette-cobra war years.......then shelbys 427 came on board for a total o 348 plus or minus one. Then chevy did the L88 to maintain street domination (never heard much from hemis because 425h.p. was where they stopped). THIS IS AN OLD ARGUMENT.....i love cobras from the 260 ci to the 289 ci to the 427 cu in engines. PHYSICS (?), YES, I WENT TO SCHOOL AND KNOW THE 3 LAWS OF PHYSICS. THE L88 came and gone just like the cobras. They were not street cars! Read about MOTION PERFORMANCE AND YENKO CHEVROLET...MOTION OUT OF LONG ISLAND AND YENKO OUT OF PENNSYLVANIA from back in my day. YEAH, IM IN THE BASEMENT ALRIGHT. This is a no- win argument. Good night.

this is the most expensive corvette in existence in case you are wondering.

I believe it's the most expensive sold so far, but not necessarily in existence. If a '63 Grand Sport were to ever go up for sale it would fetch considerably more.

@@jimmiematho8082 Correct. I think in this rarified air of '67 L88s and '69 ZL1s and '63 Grand Sports, in the very rare instance one of them actually goes up for sale, it's pretty much going to come down to how much someone (who money is probably no object to) is willing to pay, especially in these times where car prices are insane to begin with.

I'd like to know how it can be an 'IT' block if service blocks were 'CE' stamped blocks and consequently not stamped with the date code and suffix (in this case apparently an 'IT' block ), Can anyone possibly shed some more light on that?
@thud9797
@thud9797 10 ай бұрын
It's proven to be a real L88 so if you think that's just another Vette well we can't help you. And obviously the person that paid over $3 million foe it disagrees as well.
@thud9797
@thud9797 10 ай бұрын
@@cyberman4276 This car has a corporate history (President of Pontiac ordered this car) so could have gotten different treatment. Or the 5/50 didn't apply to the 67 L88. The CE stamps were only for engines replaced under the 5/50 so if it wasn't covered under the 5/50, it wouldn't have a CE stamp and they would just grab an over the counter block which were all stamped IT.

@@thud9797 I have a L88 short block that was purchased “over the counter” with CE366815 stamped on the front pad. It is the open chamber engine, 1969 design, with a casting date of C1273, March 12, 1973, which makes it a legal 5/50 warranty engine for a L88 69 Corvette. I’m getting old and it’s been sitting in my build room for 30 years now and I’m going to put it up for sale. It was only drag raced for a few years in my 68 Camaro drag car and is in very good condition, you can still see the cross hatch marks in the cylinders.

Knew a guy that built an L88 out of a 69 390hp car. Factory shortblock then built from there, back in the 80's when you could still get the parts. 3.36 gear. I asked why? He said cause he liked the way the speedo and tachometer both buried at the same time. 😀
