Description of Ford Mustang taken from Wikipedia "The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobiles known as the pony car. The Mustang’s styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. It was initially introduced as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale the following year. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its underpinnings with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment."

The 72 Gran Torino is probably the most beautiful mid size car Ford ever built.

These were the best looking cars of all the Torino years. I appreciate these slower car commercials over the ones we have now where the car is shown racing around and the picture changes very two seconds and has some guy yelling over the blaring music.

I agree with you Trent! Even though the Torino production ended in 1976, it did live on unofficially until 1979 as the LTD ll. I own a 1978 Ltd ll Sport and love it. The 1977 Ford Ltd ll was an updated Torino and still looked great...well the 2 door coupes anyway. :)

@@trentbdog The 1972 Torino, Ranchero, and Mercury Montego were my favorites. Great looks and good power too. After 74, they were iconic...but not fast. Even with the 460. Very comfortable and classy...like a personal sports couple should be. Keep your eye open and when you least expect it, you'll find the one you want.

70 & 71 looked great too if you had the headlight covers on them. Not many were ordered that way. The 72 looked good even as a 4 door but the 2 door fastback was the one to get. The “Gran Torino” movie car would have looked better without the vinyl roof.

The 1972 Ford Gran Torino is so beautiful, the car itself can remind me of the movie Gran Torino (2008), which is actually named after the main character’s (Walter Kowalski - Clint Eastwood) beloved car (a dark green 1972 Ford Gran Torino Sportsroof. :)

If Ford really wanted to go retro, they'd bring back the styling of the 1972 Gran Torino, with the boss 429 motor! That would blow chevy away, and force GM to reconsider rebadging the Trans Am, Firebird, Formula, and The GTO The Judge under Buick, since they were the closest thing to Pontiac .

Dad bought a 73 gran torino. Nice looking car. The 302 blew a rod 2 yrs in. Fixed that and then had endless coolant/ waterpump issues. Beautiful car that had tons of critical problems. Would spin out around wet corners by accident all the time. It was a fishtailing machine. Gold w/ brown vinyl top, brown interior, and a ton of large 5" cheap aluminum running board strips....the 73 had a much better looking grill than the 72. .Had the extended bumper and wider grill... 2300$ brand new in 73. I also had a 68 fairlane that sold brand new for 1500$ ( no radio) between 68 - 73 is when they first started to use alot of plastic in cars. The difference in styling and comfort in those years was like night and day...more comfort, less durable....

This was the year that the curator for Ford’s Greenwood Village was buying two cars to own and drive for the rest of his life because emissions standards were ruining drive ability and performance. Probably not a good idea cause Ford wasn’t using galvanized steel in body panels and living and driving in the rust belt meant rust through in three to five years.

Probably worked out OK. 73-74 were the worst years for drivability. Things started getting better with the introduction of catalytic converters.

They were beautiful cars that year. Even the guys who hated Fords thought it was a great looking car. In 73 they had the bumper standards they had to meet, so they had to change the styling to the “Starsky & Hutch style. Looked ok but not as good.

I have no idea where that particular commercial was filmed but I'll guess it was somewhere in Michigan. Commercials for the early part of the model year were often (usually?) filmed with pre-production cars and I don't think they didn't wanted to stray far from home in a car that didn't have all the bugs worked out. That goes double for that rolling frame car.

Interesting that the Torino was new for 1972 and the Chevelle was not new until 1973 because of a GM strike. Quality was also bad on the 72 Chevelle especially with poor paint quality.
