Rare 1975 Ford LTD Landau Commercials - In 1975 Ford introduced the Landau, which would soon replace the Brougham edition. The Landau was distinguished from lesser LTD models with hidden headlamps, ornate trim on the deck lid, and wider body side moldings. LTD Landau script was featured on the front fenders. The inside was remarkably plus and featured high-back extensions which Ford called “flight bench seating”. Nicer door trim and a few extra features gave the LTD Landau just enough flash to justify a higher price, and lent the car a stately, almost Lincoln-like appearance.

Hard riding, hard seats, thin tyres, stressed-out 4cyl lawnmower engines and if it has any hint of soft comfort, car-review soybeards write shitty articles about how it wasn't "performance oriented" and cry they couldn't throw it into a corner at 6.5G's or whatever

My Family owned the Local Ford/Mercury Dealership. I remember traveling in a car just like the Dark Brown one. My younger brother and sister and I would stretch out on the back seat and floor board (with pillows) We where 10,12 and 14 years old. Try that in today’s car’s.

These cars were surprisingly reliable for that era. My grandparents bought one brand new in '78. They took good care of it, but the next two owners beat the hell out of that car until the late '90's / early 2000's.

My family bought a well optioned new '75 LTD Landau with the Landau Luxury Group. It was a silver blue glow 4 door with dark blue vinyl top...essentially identical to the model shown in the thumbnail image attached to this video. It was one of my all-time favorite cars...I felt that it rivaled the '73 Mercury Marquis Brougham and later '78 Grand Marquis that my extended family owned, and they were also wonderful cars. Our Landau shared all of the luxury features and even most of the same interior fittings as the Grand Marquis, but with a slightly shorter footprint. I've always held the '75 through '78 LTD Landaus - particularly when fully optioned - to be "sensibly-sized Lincolns". Four years later, we purchased a 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, and the LTD became our second car. I loved that Fleetwood - it was a stunning car - but other than a few small features, it offered little beyond that of our LTD. Furthermore, the Cadillac had an absolutely inferior back seat...while the Ford's was perfectly straight across and could comfortably seat three people, our Fleetwood Brougham had a curved backseat (both the bottom and especially the backrest cushions) which "threw" all three occupants together toward the centerline of the car. So, on those occasions when we carried three people in back, the Caddy stayed home in the garage, and we relied on the Ford! I recall how in 1977 Ford advertised that the LTD "kept its size" in the face of the newly downsized Chevy Caprice, and even boasted how the LTD was dimensionally close to the similarly rescaled '77 full-sized Cadillacs. At the time, perhaps Ford was desperately promoting an old dinosaur against GM's boldly rethought and progressive new cars. But, as someone who grew up with both the old "big" LTD and newer "small" C-body Cadillac, I look back and appreciate the reasonableness of Ford's promotion.

I was in highschool in Los Angeles in 1975 and I remember these commercials.My father worked 4 Rockwell and 1 night he came home and told us that they filmed 1 of these Ford LTD commercials in the parking lot where he worked.I think it was either in El Segundo, Seal Beach or Downey California.He told me he met Hugh Downs.If U can find this commercial somewhere on KZbin it was a blue car on an angle and the ground was wet because it rained earlier that day.

My folks had the Landau in the brown metallic shown in the first clip, with the soft brown cloth split bench as shown. It was one comfortable car, and drove smoother and quieter than my current 2010 Lincoln Town Car. Not a lot of zip, but still comfortable after a 600 mile drive. That's not going to happen in today's cars. They traded it for a 1985 Toyota Cressida, in metallic brown, of course, my mom's favorite color. The Cressida was basically a Supra sedan, which gave a "push you back in your seat" takeoff which they both loved, and it was far easier to park. But 300 mile trips would leave you squirming a bit. Ford was really on a roll during this time(mid 70's) Besides freshening up their lineup with higher levels of trim, interior fabrics, etc. they were prominently featured in tv/shows produced by Aaron Spelling as well as popular films. Add to it great marketing campaigns with lots of magazine ads and detailed commercial spots, they didn't have to worry much about the competition!

I owned this car. I had a 1976 LTD Landau. It was equipped with a 400 v8, split bench with "reclining Passenger seat," am radio only (unfortunatley - but worked and sounded great!). Yet this car had 4 wheel disks brakes. It was a gold/bronze color and it looked as new. I kept it that way. In the hot summer heat it had new car smell. The Hood was like glass how it was polished. It had coil springs and NO leafs. I got compliments from many. It actually handeled very well I thought. Yes it was a huge heavy car but it was very well balanced and the rear end never broke away. You could drive it fast in corners and trust it. But the hubcaps would fly off!! I had to get out and retrieve them at times. I drove this car for a few years in the 90s. It also had the fold down head lights - they were vacuum powered. If you had any vacuum leak the lids would just stay up. It was a good car once I got it reliable. It was great!!

The crazy double-digit inflation of the 1970's was making car prices jump several times a year. By 1975, Ford gave GM sleepless nights by holding the sticker prices on their big cars. I still remember some of the Ford, Mercury and Lincoln "inflation fighter" special editions - content delete cars. Ford also created "seasonal special editions" available with limited colors and trims to keep prices low. And "Regional Edition" cars like the Northwest Edition Torino and the Southwest Edition LTD - neat end-of-the-year tricks to clear inventory!

Understanding the history of automobiles gives you a good understanding of how economics work. The 70s are the decade of the energy crisis, yet they kept making boats that ducked up gas, and people Co tinued to buy them. This gave the Japanese an opportunity to forsee the future and capture and retain large market share, while the big 3 continued to lose and never recovered.

Oh boy, do I remember this car! When my parents were looking for a house the real estate agent had a 2 door version. My sister and I sat in the back, it was a floaty, ride and the longer it went on the more car sick my sister got. Finally I had to yell at them to pull over before she threw up on all that velour upholstery!

Interior trim levels on Ford LTD surpassed competitors' cars. Ford LTD handled safely and predictably on slippery roads. Although Chevrolet was a quicker car light-to-light. Ford was a cruiser, and made a run from NY to LA with sometime triple digit mph velocity feel like a run to the supermarket. Ford LTD was a superb, reliable road car -- the best of this era.

from 69-74 the two spoke wheel was straight. the 75-78 wheel had a downward offset this is not centered The base model was called custom 500 and was available till 74. it was offered in 75-78 for fleet sales only to taxi and police orders.

@@cj-fh4nx 74 was the last year for the Galaxie 500. Custom 500 was only for police, fleet rentals and taxi in 75. LTD was the base model, LTD Brougham and Landau as the top series 75-78. Inflation was everywhere and it looks like Ford did this "special edition" for those who would not consider a full size unless discounted or by promotion. The Ford full size was the top seller of all ford models in the 70's

Our forklift pick these cars up like nothing when loading them in and out of the crusher. As a kid I enjoyed riding in these nice cars. Everyone felt safe and used to say they were heavy. When a grew up and got into the salvage business I quickly realized how easy the John Deere 544k moves them around.

My grandpa bought a 1973 Thunderbird in 73, He died 3 months later. Handed down to my mom, The car sits in a garage has only 36,000 original miles. Window sticker is still on the dash and plastic bag cover still on the seatbelts. A Jefferson Airplane 8 track is still in the player.

My parents owned a Dk.Blue/White '75 LTD 4dr (but not the Landau) from 1975-85. And because my Father was a career US Army NCO,that LTD went around the world twice! (Two postings to West Germany) Bit of a handful driving it down some of those little narrow 12th-19th century streets with cars parked on either side,though!!!

Of course I remember those. They used to be assembled in oil-fed Venezuela, with a 400 engine, no emissions equipment, and no headrests. People like the Landau model because it slightly reminde them of the Lincoln Continental. At 30000 (1976) bolivars was quite a bargain against a 80000 bolivars Mercedes 280S.

It's funny how all those things they advertised as luxuries are standard on base level cars now (except the V8). Automatic transmission, WOW! Power steering, WOW! Power brakes, WOW! And forget about that V8 engine. Todays 2.0 4cyl engines put out more power than those V8s from the 70s.

Up until the early 1970s, automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes were optional on full-size Fords, Chevrolets, and Plymouths. If someone had not purchased one of those new cars for a long time they might have still thought they were optional.
