The idea is to exploit the Coanda effect (airflow of the engines follows the curvature of the wing) to create extra lift, even when the plane itself has zero airspeed. This enables very short takeoffs / heavy lifts. Moreover, the plane is more resistant to foreign object damage from debris left on runways.

The An-74 was initially an upgrade of the An-72 test aircraft, intended to be used in the Arctic and Antarctica; and had the designation An-72A "Arctic".[3] The aircraft's main purpose is to deliver cargo, equipment and personnel over short- and medium-range routes in any climatic conditions ranging from −60 to 45 °C (−76 to 113 °F) and at any latitude, including the North Pole, and high altitudes. It can operate to and from low grade airstrips such as concrete, pebble, ice and snow aerodromes.

IMHO this plane looks very nice, maybe little bit strange, because of the position of engines, but otherwise its are streamline and balanced lines and proportions, as common in the Antonov bureau. The take off is shorter than 30 sec. and it is due the Coanda effect. Tchaburaska, as mentioned bellow was a nickname for the Czech made L-410 Turbolet, 12 seater commuter, frequently used in former Soviet union. It is a name of the cartoon mouse similar to the Mickey Mouse.

This plane can land on ice in the arctic that's why the engines are placed that's way
@justforever96
@justforever96 6 жыл бұрын
No, its engines are placed that way because that's the way the aircraft it was derived from, the An-72, has its engines. In both cases, the engine location is to help create lift to improve STOL performance, and avoid FOD and dust ingestion. The fact that the An-72 was so good at hort, unprepared fields meant that it was an ideal aircraft to optimize for arctic runways; the changes to the design were all around making it able to handle snow and cold weather, like ski landing gear, etc, but the engines were already the way they are. So you see, the engines were not placed that way to help arctic landings, they were placed that way to help with SHORT landings, and BECAUSE they were that way it was decided it was a good aircraft to use for Arctic missions as well. See the difference? Semantics, I'm sure, but it's an important distinction. It's like someone saying "The PB2Y Privateer was designed with long range to be a maritime patrol aircraft"....that's simply wrong. The PB2Y was developed into a maritime patrol aircraft BECAUSE the B-24 had an excellent range. Big difference there.

@@justforever96 , you are correct. I went to Boeing just about the time of the 'roll out' to deliver and install a GEC 905 computer system for future software development to the triple engine management system. It had the designed software on board but changes are always needed during flight trials etc. The engineers said that the three computers were each programmed in a different language to make sure a common language fault would not cause a system failure. The three computers worked on a 'voting' system for the engine management system. I was not a software engineer just a field service engineer on the GEC 905 computer. The three computers on board were compact military computers. A 'blown flap' plane needed a very fast response to an engine that was failing and that is why a computer system was used. The forward speed of the aircraft on take off was partially generated by the engine configuration.

Well, partly. More importantly it is to create a 'blown wing" effect for STOL performance. The fact that this is about has high as you can get on the plane helps, as does being further forward, to a lesser extent.
@Ace-Av8er
@Ace-Av8er 5 жыл бұрын
Correct. The main reason for engine placement is to achieve a blown wing where the exhaust gases and air are blown on the top surface of the wing to achieve high speed flow of air above the wing so the wing starts creating life at a lower forward speed without having to have a long take off run This is a STOL configuration for a STOL aircraft.
@JFrazer4303
@JFrazer4303 5 жыл бұрын
Not only does exhaust air stick to and follow it down to the trailing edge, but that fast stream captures and drags surrounding air with it (see Coandă effect), over the top of the wing and back through the tail. Extra lift & control authority.

This plane is one of the best STOL in the world. Maybe it is weird, but actually he doesn't: the engines are located above, in order to blow on the upper wing and flaps profile. The Coanda effect generated increases lift by 20%. This aircraft was designed also for the new soviet class of aircraft nuclear carriers (Ulyanovsk), never entered service. There was also an AWACS version: the An-71. This planes are too big and tall for the Kuznetsov carrier, they could need catapult launches and higher hangar on board. Too big for aircraft carrier.
