I loved how Brian would stand up to Murray in this tape. He knew WHAT he had and WHO he was. Murray may have gotten them started, but it was BRIAN who took them to the stars! Murray needed to step out of the picture long before this.

Yeah Murry was clearly jealous of his sons success, it’s sad really, it’s wasn’t enough he abused them all those years, but he had to continue to insult and belittle them.

Murry knew they didn't need him after mid-1963. He was trying to make the group all about "him." He must have made each session run an extra hour each time he showed up.

Poor Brian. It doesn't matter that Murray was a musician and DID probably have some helpful ideas to contribute. Family needs to stay the HELL out of the studio. This isn't amateur night or karaoke. It's a professional major label band trying to work.

Drunk Murry Wilson telling Al he shouldn't drink wine with "so many kids around." I've seen many version of this session, but I've not heard the portion where Mike and Brian argue about one of Brian's new "intellectual" friends. It was transcribed in a magazine somewhere, but I've never heard it.

I cannot believe that they put up with him for so long. It must have been terrible those early years dealing with Murry. Murry knew the music business and helped them get signed but I don't think they really NEEDED him. They would have made it without him and probably would have been less screwed up.

How the hell did these guys make it as long as they did without strangling this overbearing moronic control freak and throwing him out on his ass? He also tried to stop them from recording 'Fun, Fun, Fun' because he didn't like it. No wonder Brian was so troubled. This asshole screwed up his head with constant putdowns throughout his life.

I have to break up this collective judgemental session of bloggers. Yes, true. We all know about the horrible Murry. He was, I'm sure, an overbearing ogre. However, if you reseached his own upbringing, his father was also much more abusive than he was, with alcohol being in the mix. This is a pathologically generational thing, that continues from one generation to another. Unfortunately, Murry wasn't able to "break the chain". There is a thing called "forgiveness". And that's up to the Boys.

Great point. Nothing changes instantly. Each generation can only improve so much upon what they inherited. That's true with both families and society (civil rights, technology, etc).

“...fight for success” -right there Murray confabulates bullheaded aggression as the solution for artistic excellence. He’s the WWII-era dad. And Brian is standing his ground and being entirely reasonable. It’s both a little sad and kind of ridiculous. If the dad wasn’t so tellingly bleeding from his pores with envy and the loss of dominance, I don’t doubt that Brian would have taken any useful advice without the bellicose clap-trap.

This is like listening to someone else's family argument, a pretty uncomfortable situation. Part of this recording can be heard on an official Beach Boys documentary DVD so they obviously don't have a problem with the general public hearing it. I really don't want to pass judgement on anybody here. I've known guys like Murry Wilson and have had some tense family issues myself so this tape actually sounds oddly familiar in some ways. The fact is, Brian and everybody else here got past this and continue to have great careers.

Let's not get carried away with all that praise for Murry.. Yes, he was instrumental in getting them going. After that it was their talent plus The Wrecking Crews instrumentals in the studio backing them. Brian IS a musical genius and much due must be given to him also. By the way, someone I know within their production co. says this concert tour they are getting ready to start should have a half-million guarantee to the players in the group per show. 50+ shows booked, that's a lot of money

I read somewhere that Brian gave the song Surf City (he wrote it) to Jan and Dean to record and when it went to #1 on Billboard the father beat the hell out of Brian. that where Brian lost a little bit of his hearing. What a peace of cake that father was.

Despite Murray Wilson's attempt to interfere or make the session better - this Beach Boys Greatest A Capella tune. The tune is written in F Major. In the bridge beginning on bar 17-24 the chord sequence begins with this change: D minor 7 (D-7) to G7. It is this change beginning at the Bridge- and not as a turn-around as often is the case that makes the words "Rhonda You

To his credit he doesn't SOUND drunk on this tape. He sounds like a controlling, belligerent, idiot but not a drunk one. Wow, how unprofessional though if he did come into the studio drunk, especially with all the spectators that were in the studio at the time this was recorded. No wonder Brian sounds embarrassed/annoyed. Very bad example for his kids, and under those circumstances he has no right to belittle Brian like that.

So even though he isn't singing lead in this take..... either he already laid that track down and their doing the backing and will turn Brian's vocal down in the mix, or it's yet to be done. I think I hear his name mentioned .. he's in the studio. The equipment was so primitive that you controlled each singers volume by their placement. There were controls also, but the mixers were smaller and the tape machine's didn't have that many tracks.

sounds like my dad. The guys from that generation meant well. I think he really was proud of them and wanted the best for them. But he just bugged the crap out of everyone. Of course thats great advice to "sing from the heart" etc. But they didnt want to hear all that over and over. My dad did the same thing helping me with homework and sports etc. But at least he was there and cared. And that means alot.

It's so obvious to any fool that the Beach Boys owe ALL their success to Murray Wilson's loving and wise guidance. He had the patience of a saint with these slackers. I mean really, he was so instrumental . . . and why didn't the ingrates even record Side-Step Two-Step? They TRULY did not deserve this guy . . . bunch of shrill loafers singing through their asses the whole time!! So sad. I wish they would just shut up and let him talk. An intelligent man . . .
