Rare Earth was not the only white act signed by Motown but it was the most successful. Their album "Rare Earth In Concert" was a two-disc live masterpiece. Even the cover art (looked like a backpack) was cool. On this album, this song was 23:33 minutes of pure rockin' joy which is why I perfer it slightly to the original (which is still great). But to be able to do that live and sound that good was just incredible.

Have to add Motown was so enamored with Rare Earth they actually gave them their own label..They covered several Motown hits I Know I'm Losing You and Ray Charles, What'd I Say

It's a matter of energy. The Tempts have smooth beautiful voices (plus you can't beat their dance moves and harmonies), whereas Rare Earth's version leans more towards rock. I like them both.

Rick Clark is right, the album version is amazing and was a whole side of music on the original record. It is an utter classic of that era, when you have a chance, check it out and be amazed. You can also see these guys at the California Jam 1974. Great stuff from yesteryear and great cover song choice. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Yep, I was in the 10th grade when this concert went down. Lol I am 65 now, OMG I'm getting old! 😂 If you like this song and you haven't heard the other one you have to listen to rarest singing I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE. And if you can find it and they let you play it, you have to do the live version. Huge crowd and you get to see how they are really into it. 👍🏻🇺🇲 👀 Both virgins are great, but I am hung on rare Earth. They just push energy when you listen to them.

Angela, the beautiful 😁... what you heard is actually just a few minutes of a VERY long (17+ minute) live version, cut to fit on a 45 RPM record, or as you would call it today, the "radio edit". It had a fairly long, slow intro that transitioned into the part you heard, and then, when the version you heard was fading at the end, that's when the song REALLY kicks into high gear, with a really great drum solo piece.

What is interesting about the video is that Edward Guzman, the conga player, wasn't a member of the group when this song came out. He was added on their second album, "Ecology;" this film footage is from a later live version of the song. Still a good version, a rock version with a bit of soul I'd say. I like both, though I hesitate to compare them. Which one I like better would depend upon what mood I'm in.

More RARE EARTH, "I KNOW I'M LOSING YOU", "HEY BIG BROTHER", "I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE"... long versions are 🔥 What really makes you notice.
