sickboy I think we have a Jeff 🤭🤭 There’s this new kid, Alejandro Aranda. Getting noticed from American Idol but his genius arrangements, melodies, emotion he puts into his songs, his skills on guitar and piano just give me the feeling I got when I listen to Jeff. Not a mimic but his own thing. Its refreshing af. His personal music posts are where you see those feelings.

Jeff communicates using his entire being. Mind, body, and soul. When he expresses himself it all lines up. And it's a fucking *masterpiece.* I've known people like this, though they are painfully rare. They warm everyone fortunate enough to be near them. Like the sun. To know them is to love them. And they don't even have to try. You just want to be with them. Doing anything. Or doing nothing at all. To share experiences with them is just beyond comparison. Most of the joy comes from getting to witness their reaction in real-time. It's intoxicating. They make you feel safe. Sorta like you're indestructible. Like no matter what it is, or what happens next, to be with them is enough to make your whole world okay for a while. These types are a gift. More precious than diamonds. If you are loved by one, especially if you are entrusted by one, cherish them openly. And as often as you can. They tend to feel everything very deeply. This includes the bad stuff, making them quite tortured at times. And likely to spiral. They often need extra support, love, and assurance. And I mean lots of it. In quantities far more than most ever need. But they are not spiritual vampires, every bit of emotional labor you put into the relationship comes back, tenfold. It's in the way they experience it and feel it. Their kindness, their sincerity, their gratitude. And especially the love they feel for you. You can see it all over them. And god, does it ever turn your insides to mush. You'd move mountains for them. All they have to do is smile. I know it's a stretch to say this of Jeff since I didn't know him and have only seen him speaking in interviews and other precious little bits of media here and there. And of course, we are blessed to have his art. I can only know him through that. But I do know this "trait" (for lack of a better word) and it is almost always instantly identifiable. You don't need a lot of source material to know it when you see it. And it cannot be faked.

Man that brings back memories! I played “Grace” to death, and even transferred it to cassette so I could play it in my car and wore that out over two-plus years. I couldn’t wait until his follow-up. Then I came across a tiny article about his death in the local paper in May ‘97 (I wasn’t home much at a time and the internet was just gaining popularity). To put it lightly, I was floored. It was the first time in my life that I was saddened by the death of a “famous” person; and that remains the case today. I put t”famous” in quotation marks, because Jeff was far from famous in the sense that you didn’t hear his music on any radio stations outside of college radio; his two videos were relegated to the late night “alternative” program 120 minutes on MTV; and the sales of Grace were modest. I’m fairly certain a completed second album would have made him a star, as you could hear the potential of some of the tracks off of Sketches… It’s a bit odd that it took American Idol contestants’ renditions of his version of Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to foster his posthumous exposure to the public. But better late than never, I guess; and regardless of the source from which his talent gained wider exposure and appreciation.

Magical! And...not. Jeff is beloved. And, just an ordinary person, look for deeper meaning in life. He beautifully, adventurously, and accurately expressed his inner longing through music. In that, his voice was unusually beautiful. But his story is as old as every other musician with the misunderstanding that music will fulfill them. It won't. But that longing....that's worth looking into. There's more. He knew that too. That's my favourite thing about him.

This was late August 1995. The live footage at the end is probably at the Metro in Sydney, August 28. He then played 3 different small venues in Melbourne the following week (and the RRR Rooftop Cafe set) and 2 more shows in Sydney. He then took a break until a New Year's Eve show in New York City, then back to Australia for about 15 more shows, and one in Auckland, in Feb/March '96 (the Hard Luck Tour). These were effectively his last ever proper concerts with the original full band lineup. He only played sporadic warmups or secret shows under funny names later in '96 and early '97, then the Memphis residency at Barrister's with his new drummer. In my opinion this is why the Australian shows were so great, because he was near the end of the touring cycle and at the peak of his powers. He had also had a good break before the '96 tour and was touring with friends in the Dambuilders (featuring Joan Wasser) and the Grifters. He obviously loved it here :) thanks Jeff.
