Where in the hell do come up with "underrated"??? Any person with good taste and knowledge of guitar knows better. Is he not FM radio rotation or his music should be piped in to all buildings??? Oh, they are awesome people, I did not know they were your personal friends. He said "Chink" so he is a racist? Well "chink" is the stuff between logs in a cabin or knee length chaps.

This man and his wife and band are amazing. Way better if you are there for the concert. I saw them in St. Louis at Old Rock House, it was beyond sick, It is not mostly country. He plays about equal amounts of the main guitar styles, and mixes it all in, sometimes even in the same song! The drummer made more drum sound with one drum and a cymbal, than a lot of drummers do with 20 drums. Tanya could teach a clock how to stay in time.

Saw Junior Brown in NYC years ago at a place called Tramps...it was a snow storm night as well, but made the show with my date...we got to meet him back in his dressing room with his wife Tanya after the show...just sat talking like we were old friends...thanks Junior for your time and respect.

I found Junior’s cassette tape at the library back in about 1994. Now I own all his work, I’m a huge fan!

I saw Junior Brown in Austin. The venue was small and he had the room rocking. I had a great time.

Junior is a great talent. I'm sure he is flattered by the commenters getting upset because someone called him underrated. Junior isn't exactly blowing the country music world up. He actually is over looked too many times. Hang in there Junior.

I can't believe he struggled at first, I liked his style the first time I heard him.

When my boys were teens and fighting on a long drive I played my Jr Brown tape, which they hated because it was "cornball country". Punishment for them... I'd rewind "Highway Patrol" again and again, marvel at the guitar solo, sing along in my bass voice, "Justa doin my job... on the highway patrol." Good times!

I was in law enforcement when "Highway Patrol" came out. We'd have to both respond to and occasionally just drop in for a walk through of local bars, and one DJ at one bar used to also be a cop. Ol' Bonnie, God rest her soul, used to have that song cued all the time and that would start before the door closed behind us. That was always very cool.

Thanks for posting this excellent interview. My wife and I were fortunate to first see Junior and Ms. Tanya play at a neighborhood bar here in Austin, about 1990. I had never heard of him and only went to meet a friend for a couple pitchers of beer and some free music. Boy was I in for a treat -- one of the best music performances I've seen -- and I've seen many. There probably weren't more than 30 people in the place -- but they were all going nuts by the end of the first song.

Wow !!! Thanks for posting this - I love Junior Brown. I’m very eclectic in my music tastes (everything from Gregorian Chant to modern Hip-Hop!!), but have always had a weakness for great guitar playing. First heard his “Surf Medley” on an internet surf music playlist and chased it down. Been hooked ever since. Great to see this video about him !!

He is what I would call an unknown legend. He has played with so many if the greats, and is the guy that the greats listen to. Like John Hiatt, the songwriters song writer.
