My dad (rip) was a B-24 pilot - 35 missions Sept 44 -- March 45 -- and he had one of these "alien" 262s swoop in next to his starboard wing and salute -- obviously out of ammo and fuel and then peeled off. Always thought it was a great story until it was confirmed by his remaining crew members at their last reunion 8 years ago. Why didn't the waist gunner shoot, you ask?! He (a shoe salesman from Philly) was out of .50cal as well!!😋. My father assured me, it wasn't "what the hell is that, but WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!!". Thankfully, too few, too late for Adolf.

The engines only had a life of 25 hours as the turbine blades failed.Adolf Galland stated some engines only had an operational life of 12 to 13 hours.
@0Turbox6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that was negligible. One mission didn't last much longer than one hour. Better to replace some engine parts after a while, as to burry dead pilots.
@wanderschlosser18575 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady It was in fact quite reliable for all the high end technology it carried. The airframe was one of the most balanced and easy to fly for that time. Yet the engines were of cause a different story due to bad availability of better materials and of cause new technology which was in the very beginning of its development. And no, a P-51 could not easily shoot one down in combat when defending bombers because the Me 262 was simply too fast. They had to wait for Me 262-unfortunate situations such as start and landing or low(er) speed dogfights. The point is at that time the Me 262 and the Meteor were the future and P-51 (and Spits, FW190, Yaks, etc. ...) all of a sudden became obsolete as fighter aircraft!
@wanderschlosser18575 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady Well I agree that it is nowadays overhyped like many other war machines and any weapon is only as good as the person using it, the strategy it is operating with and of cause the enemy's counter measures allow. Anyway the 262 was for sure the best bomber interceptor in existence in 44 and 45. And it it did this job exceptionally good for the circumstances it was operated in. No other plane except perhaps the Meteor would have been capable to do the same under the same circumstances. And it was almost impossible to shoot it down when intercepting the Allied bombers. Even though attacking 262's were usually outnumbered by at least 1:10 by the escort fighters.
@wanderschlosser18575 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady Well then thanks that you responded to my comments and we had a brief discussion. I'm a gas turbine engineer and I learned my trade on aircraft engines so I'm not that far away from the matter. Besides that I've always been interested in aviation technology and history and I try to figure out the real context as bias-free as possible. And other opinions such as yours are always welcome.
@clockdva203 жыл бұрын
The sort life span of the turbine blade due to the lack of correct meterial and lower quality substitute's was not really that important by that time of the war , the life span of the pilots was far less than 25hrs with only a few veteran pilots left to lead their groups . It was more worrying for the pilots recovering these aircraft after the war ended in the race to grab as many of these new aircraft , lots of pilots ferrying these aircraft had little idea it their engines had zero hrs on them or 25 and half hrs . I think these aircraft are flying today with a modern engine footed or are fully built replica's , I am pritty sure it would way to costly to maintain the original Jumo or BMW engines parts wise , though some people have very deep pockets out there nice to see such an import plane flying , the Glister Meteor may have been the first Jet fighter built , but the ME 262 was light years ahead in design , swept wings an a moveable tail ,and built at a point in the war were the quality need for such an aircraft was no longer possible to do.

@hertzair11863 жыл бұрын
The 262 was staggeringly far ahead of Allied aircraft. It may have also been the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in a dive. Hans Guido Mütke (see his Wikipedia article), whilst full-throttle power diving his 262 on a P-51, reported that his aircraft buffeted, then smoothed out as he accelerated past airspeed red-line. Then as he slowed down, the buffeting returned until he slowed down to normal speed. He described the symptoms of supersonic flight and didn’t even realize it. It wasn’t until later that the “buffeting then smooth and quiet” as you go supersonic symptoms were described by test pilots. In 1999, computer modeling showed that the ME262 was in fact, capable of supersonic flight.
@hertzair11863 жыл бұрын

in 2014 at this airshow i watched from the back yard of someone who lived near the field. the 262 and then a p-51 flew over low and slow. then low and fast. the roar from the mustang was far louder than the 262. i had always heard pilots say when they got into those early jets they were amazed at how quiet they were compared to piston engine planes. i know why they say that. and then a mig 15 went over. it was also a lot less noisy than later jets ,with their vastly more powerful engines.
