Afraid not me thinks ! Many moons ago I saw a pair of ceremonial daggers taken from Admiral Donitz at the time of the German surrender. He was disrobed [ disarmed ] and the daggers were given to an army security guy. The guy was never told what to do with them, so he kept them. Tend to think the Donitz family ought have them really. I love how the Germans had dress daggers for almost every occupation. Can you imagine a U.S. Postal mail carrier walking around today, delivering mail while wearing his postal dress dagger? LOL!
@brittakriep29383 жыл бұрын
As far as i know, some members of US postal sevice are armed security personal. In many Wild West movies, robbers try to rob the post/ money box and money, jewelry etc. the travellers from a post coach, and a ,shotgunrider' was next to the driver. This happened sometimes also in Germany, the postmen had been usually unarmed, but sometimes, when paying a fee(?) a policeman accompnied the coach. Sometimes the postmen on foot did not only deliver letters or small parcels, the ,Geldbriefträger'/ money postmen had to deliver money. As far as i know, in imperial Gernany the ,Geldbriefträger' had truncheons. Posttrains/post raiilway wagons had been accompanied by armed railway men/ railway police or Bahnpolizei. Formerly sometimes in large post offices there had been few arms. In Hitler era, i don't think, that ordinary postmen carried daggers, but surely the armed men of Postschutz / postal protection . When in wwll outside of Germany, reststance groups attacked german trains, the defenders had been often no soldiers, but men of Bahnpolizei and Postschutz. Few decades ago the son of a postman told me, his father has pepper spray from ( German) Federal Post, but not against post robbers, but for dangerous dogs.

Breathtaking inventory, but then Tom Wittmann has been doing this for decades, so it's no surprise. Back in the 90s I used to collect, and it was indeed a very exciting hobby. The Wittmann Offering publication was an event to wait eagerly for. But eventually I got out of it, along with collecting all the Leica Cameras (which was my main interest), and got heavy back into music, so I was collecting instruments again, mainly guitars. Now, as I'm getting older, I've been shrinking my stable of guitars down to just a handful (dozen or so) of really outstanding pieces. It's funny though, that decades ago, when I was into daggers, I hardly knew anyone else that was in to the hobby. Just a couple of 'dealers' in NYC and that was it. It appears that the WWII dagger hobby has grown, no doubt because of the internet, and the excellent work that folks like Alex are doing with walking encyclopedias like Mr Wittmann. I know I'm very late to this party, but I hope you're both doing well and staying healthy!

Decades of dedicated collecting by Mr Wittmann! A fabulous look around a legend level collection. Incidentally when referencing the Red Cross its untrue that red cross personnel were specifically banned from carrying weapons, quite contrarily the Hague conventions (detailed in the later 1929 Geneva convention) do state when medical personnel are permitted to bear arms.

I have been a WWII History buff for 65 years. I knew the German Military was fond of daggers 🗡 and swords. But I didn't know there were so many collectors. In a millennium America it isn't socially acceptable today so I would imagine many collectors just don't show off their collection to the neighbors......... But as for those who are of my mind I can see the fascination. I am totally enthralled with this hobby at my age. I can totally understand how one could get into daggers and even collect a luger or two. I kept remembering an old maxim from long, long before my time. "Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it".
