Rare Porsche 914 Station wagon comes home with me,

a friend asked me to go on a porsche 914 pick with him. he was not able to make a deal for $ and then passed on it. l offered $200 more and got it, its rough but l like the odd cars, that and thought it would make for good video, the car is a 1976 porsche 914 converted into a station wagon by a guy named bondo bill in 1978, in this vid we take a look at what we got and what it will take to get it going.

The sticky part is prob a bushing... the left to right is a simple ball socket... the front to back is a slide thru bushing... a lot of WD should remedy that... notice I didn’t say fix....

Mark Miller hope all is going well, brother. I was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer back in Dec, they took out all of my lymph nodes from my right groin area, every test I’ve had since then came up negative, so I opted for no radiation and Chemo was not needed according to my doc. I go in for a PET scan in mid May to see if the cancer is gone, my fingers are crossed!

What's missing is the flange around the middle with grade 5 bolts every 4 inches. Just take all the bolts out and pop it apart into the front and back halves and work on the engine, then bolt it back together.

This is Bosch d-jetronic FI, like the VW Type 3s and 4s (up thru the first month of MY '74.) FI Beetles were L-jet. Yes, you want to replace every inch of pressurized fuel hose. Use any decent quality 5/16" hose, because the pressure is only 30 psi, but the old hose will break and leak. Don't forget the hoses around the pump, under the gas tank. Until I saw this video, I thought engine access on a 914 was the worst I've every had to work on, but you've shown me wrong. If you can't find an appropriate distributor, I have a couple that will work. I believe they came on '72 Type 4s, pretty much the same thing, only earlier. Good luck with this project, but I'm not sure it'll be worth it.

Porsche 914's are the love of my life! I had 4 and still have one! great cars and handled better than any old 911. the problem also was the area below the battery, the hell hole. but only for the regular ones, because the rain water would drip right on the battery. the battery would overflow and rot the metal below. the roof was nicely stored under the rear trunk lid and hardly took any space up. that piece of hose you found in the front trunk was the rain water drain for the right side of the motor. the tray on the left side of the motor is the relay tray and the ECU attaches ti it in the side. put a ply wood in the trunk and lay on it to work on the motor

I had a 914 too ,laid over on it's side after going through a barbed wire fence before I got it . I installed lots of bondo to it, steel wheels to replace the factory alloys . Kept it 2 weeks and traded it for a CJ5 .I still have the alloys ,use them to hold air hose and water hose .

if you had an hour to skype, I could walk you through everything, I was a long time owner and this is almost a sin to watch. I wish you luck but it is so sad. Yes that top is original except that the jackleg that butchered it cut a moon roof into it, yes it does go in the rear trunk but does not take up but 1 ½ " still holds old type american tourister luggage. so many things I could tell you about this. Most of the time in the '75/6 the biggest problem was an improperly programmed "brain box" , a bunch of back yard mechanics took out the injectors and put on a carb. The shift pattern had 3 gate H left gate 1 and 2, middle gate 3 and 4, right gate upper is 5th to get to reverse, push down on the shifter and take the bottom right gate. Love your show but this one should be salvage what you can you will never get it good by rustoration.

I sold motors out of the rusted ones to someone who was making trikes. When I was WAY younger I had a 71 914 1.8L. It was SOOO MUCH FUN!!! They stick to the road like glue so cornering is AMAZING! I can't imagine working on that one with that back on it. With the original hood LOL you could pretty much just touch the engine. The 1.8L had no bottom end and it wouldn't even squeak a tire BUT once you got it wound up it would sing. I got about 40 mpg normal driving and probably 30 mpg running it like a borrowed mule. I really miss that car we did some crazy sh!t together. I ended up trading it for a 72 International Scout II. Talk about worlds apart!!!
