The note about not having enough time to work on your own cars is valid, Nat and Cal should probably promote someone to general manager and step back. Still come in and work 4 days a week to help keep the place running in tip-top condition and be the "faces" of the company, but give yourselves a proper two day weekend every week, and a day a week to do your own shit. That's the thing about having a successful business - if you don't get to enjoy the success, what was the point in the first place?

I had a BMW 318 iS 1990 from new back then. The engine had different specs 1990 than it had later. A 2-door shell (only choice), M interior. Basically 325 M underpinnings. Way shorter rear end ratio than a normal 318 or 320. The engine had a rev limiter and the car really needed it. The estate body is way more useful than the 2-door. Mine was the same red, but with one piece BBS wheels. Used the original steel rims with winter tires, because BBS wheels cost a lot here in Finland back then, both from BMW and aftermarket. Interesting video as always. I've been watching your videos sińce the Gordon Murray Escort build.

Enjoying the Saab build. Out of curiosity, which VIN do you use when joining 2 different vehicles together ?
@simongroot71473 ай бұрын
When the car is grafted together from two originals, which VIN gets used or does it get a unique Retro Power VIN? Who decides, I seem to recall that the DVLA awarded points for major assemblies to decide but it seems the Allegro and the SAAB seem to be about 50% of each donor.

I think it would be interesting if you guys reviewed your process of what you do at the end of the day to make sure the shop does not burn down. Seems with so much welding and grinding you guys have some really good process in place.
@RetropowerNat3 ай бұрын
It’s always a concern! There is a “shutdown procedure” which is used if Cal or I aren’t doing the lockup (though we usually do) and no hot work can be conducted for the last half hour of the day. Flammables kept away from weld areas. All power shut off to non necessary stuff at the end of the day. All that sort of thing. Still always a worry though.

Do you treat/coat the bare metal before applying the lead loading, or does the lead protect the bare underlying metal from corrosion?
@RetropowerNat3 ай бұрын
No, it has to go onto bare clean steel, and the flux used (basically ammonium chloride with powdered lead in it) is pretty aggressive. The key to preventing corrosion is cleaning afterwards and prep afterwards
@chrishay83853 ай бұрын
The metal has to be super clean,so it can be tinned so the lead solder will adhere
@BurningAlive4093 ай бұрын
Base metal is tinned with an acid solution that gets torched on, this is why you can see them wiping with cloths regularly, to clean off the acid

Something I’m very interested in and have been for 2 years or so. I very nearly acquired a 7 axis robot 12 months or so ago with a view to bringing this in-house, but realistically the software is the absolute key to the process and it’s not quite there yet. Close but not yet a fully commercial proposition for our application. One day……..
