The coins were collected by a numismatist, James Allaire Millholland, back in the late 1800's and until his passing in 1911. He kept them in a custom wooden cabinet that he had hand crafted in order to preserve his cherished collection. After his pasing, the family left them in their original condition and untouched for over 100 years. Here's a good article to read about them, if interested: www.coinbooks.org/v26/esylum_v26n08a17.html I know the video is long, but if you love true pieces of art and coins that have escaped the concerns of time (and circulation), then I hope you will enjoy the video as much as I did making it. I have two 1896 silver dollars from my father after his passing , that received them from his father before his passing . My grandpa was born in 1896 and his mother saved them for him . When he turned eighteen , she gave them to him to pass on to his children . Which he did as well as my dad did before his passing . The coins have not seen daylight since 1975 , when my grandfather passed . I’ll pass them to my son when I pass and he’ll do the same . Great heirlooms to have .

I know the coins are the star of the show and they're beyond spectacular. Once in a lifetime coins for sure. That antique wooden chest they were stored in was awsome. Old school craftsmanship, old wood and hardware. It was a remarkable piece as well. Great video.

Thank you so much for showing us all these magnificent coins Rob. What a treat it must have been for you to get to actually touch them! Yes, Millholland was a true aficionado and loved his coins. I'd like to think (and have good reason for thinking so) that many of the coins we handle today will be as greatly admired by our descendants in 100 years as those in this group. All the more reason for us to understand we are truly not owners, but stewards of our coins. Again thanks for sharing your experience here. Greatly appreciated.

"Whoops! Excuse me while I wipe the saliva that just dripped off my tongue onto my chest, as my eyes glazed over from being hypnotized from the toned kaleidoscopic glaze of those coins!" I know the shiny clean silvery white coins are coveted by most collectors, including myself at times, but I think there's nothing more "alluring" to me than a coin that has toning to it, whether that be a dusky gray or a myriad of rainbow-like hues. I think it's because it gives a life's history to them. The shiny ones look like they were made just minutes before, hiding their actual age. You can feel and experience the history behind the toned ones! Those Morgans were just exquisite, from the ones that were uncirculated to the 1895's you showed that weren't, like the one that was PF45 (one of my favorites!). Thanks Rob (as well as Stack's Bowers Galleries) for allowing us this special look into the collection!!! It's very appreciated!

great conversations in the clips. It's amazing how crazily coins can colorize and tone in the years. Mad respect for the family who resisted the urge to touch them or sell them. Love the light but very noticeable golden toning on some of the Morgans. Truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to even view these.

Two thoughts on this: one is that it's hard to believe that when these coins were new, the mint sold them for .25¢ to .50¢ over face value ( on average) and the second thing is that I'm kinda surprised that PCGS didn't give them a custom label attribution for the collection. Absolutely in awe of these coins, Rob , you're a lucky guy 👍
@videoluvr4204
@videoluvr4204 Жыл бұрын
yes, pretty strange they couldn't give it a collection distinction on the label
@jamesgoss1860
@jamesgoss1860 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is almost as big a deal as that gold horde found in a box in the ground, and that got a special label. It's a shame there will be nothing to link these coins together going forward, other than sequential PCGS registry numbers.

Living in New York City in the middle 1980's, I had the opportunity to attend several Bowers and Merema auction previews. I remember seeing a number of well known dealers im attendence. I felt a little embarrased when I signed the registeration form and it asked what company I was with. Apparently i was the only person who was there "just to look" at the coins. Nevertheless, the B and M reps were very professional and showed me the most wonderful collection of uncirculated pre 1834 U.S. gold that you could imagine. I kept record of the prices i thought the coins would bring (this was in the pre-slab days). I subcribed to the auction catalogue which included the prices realized follow up results. Those were the days!
