How good was Mark Smythe! He seemed to be able to wrong-foot players and slap the ball away effortlessly on the forehand. Watch, too, his backhand smashes - even to serves - from around 27:05. Wow! Brett Clarke seemed to have a lot of time in his ultra-smooth play, too.

Luckg too, not many people get to work in the area they love and his done it. My father always said do what you love and you will never do a days work . i envy him for that as that to many peoole is one of the most sort after notions of success. Also it is very difficult go do bug he found a way.Lucky bugger! Still reckon he sleeps on a table and has stiga and double fish tatts though

Does anybody know how Paul Burton used to fare against Mark Smythe. Paul had a wicked back hand loop.

that brett clarke was a weird character. never said a word as far as i knew.good player though. i think him and mark smythe slept on a table tennis table.

Fucking A i agree with that. He was weird ok .Almost alien in presence. Played him a few times ( i was a very average A grade player). Thrashed me always ,never got higher than 15 points against him usually between 10 and 14 points. Tried to make a few jokes and not a word or expression . Maybe he was deaf!!!!. Af least Mark had the abilith to talk. You got to remember they defined themselves thru table tennis so unless you were in their league they snobbed you. i think they would admit that now that they have matured (or they should have matured by now). Yeah Iam quit ed shre they went to bed dreaming about Jan ove waldner. i think Brett was your classic loner you know incredibly introverted with few friends ( to have friends u gotta talk or at leasf smile).Don't think he would have a facebook friend. In fact when i look back on those times he deminds me of the classic disturbed serial killer.!!!HELL OF A PLAYEF THOUGH. LEFTY N VERY NATURALLY TALENTED. IF HE WERE BORN CHINESE I BELIEVE HE COULD OF BEEN A TOP INTERNATIONAL PLAYER ,AM SERIOUS, SERIOUSLY MEAN THAT. PAUL BURTON WAS GOOD TOO.

By the way his still a bit of a smart ass,you know what i mean if you know him well. His still quite good,i think he won the WA open a few tjmes. His only lost a tad bit of powed n speed thats all. Obviouslg thats expected as ws get older. He was my coach when i plaged 25 yrs ago at Albert park and Dandenong.
