The Soviet plane was a direct knock-off from the fantastic Anglo French Concorde. It was based on stolen plans which were inadequate. The French aerospace industry knew that they had spies working for them and cleverly slipped them out of date plans which turned out to be the undoing of the Russian aircraft. It is the main reason why the Russian plane had to adopt the Canard wings - it was totally impossible to fly at lower speed without them. It was a copy, and a bad one. One can admire the airmanship of the brilliant Soviet pilots who were fully aware of huge dangers of this supersonic Frankenstein. What skill; what courage.
@dmitrybobrov Жыл бұрын
@@technicolor1956bullshit. Commercial Tu-144 was absolutely different plane and had much lower landing speed compare to Concord. Concord had around 700 incidents - blowing tires due to high landing speed. French wanted to redesign Concorde when they saw commercial tu144 but British had no funds to do it. If Concorde would be redesigned it would look like Tu144. Besides Concorde team and Tupolev design bureau worked close on settling new procedures for servicing supersonic planes for ground handling

@bombarderoazul The aerodynamic requirements of an aircraft this large actually dictate the overall shape, so the Tupolev must look similar to the Concorde. This includes the engine intakes and the wing shape. The low speed canards are unique to the TU-144. The XB-70 Valkyrie also has canards, placed lower. In another video, the deployment is demonstrated, they still work after powering the aircraft, very cool. The Soviet engineers did a wonderful job designing this machine.

My dear friends... Concord and Tu-144 are awesome planes! I love them both! Concord is beautiful great plane & best IMHO plane; this bird flew longer ALONE with NO COMPATITOR for so long while Tu-144 was where? - Nowhere... But don't take me wrong... Tu-144 has its moments; such as regular airlines Moscow - Alma Ata for several years & speed record! Till it became not interested to Kremlin... It is not a coincidence that Boing, NASA, Rockwell, Tupolev choose this plane for high speed testing... One more thing - understand me right now, I don't want to look cynical, please but don't forget that Tu-144 took way less causalities then Concord... Both planes are history now & they played great role in avionic progress! Respect each other & be ready for awesome future!

As a footnote, the 144 suffered from its monolithic chassis, huge single alloy sections. Once a crack started, it would continue for many meters. Today, computer modeling makes finding the flaws much easier. Multiple smaller sections is far safer, but you have to remember this was from the 1960s.

That noise was one of the TU144's problems. Passengers were literally unable to communicate vocally over the sound of the engines and had to use gestures and written notes as the engines used afterburners for cruise flight whereas the more refined Concorde engines did not have to and were thus quieter.

The TU-144 sadly became just a very expensive postal flight service between Moscow and Vladivostok before the Soviet Union collapsed due in part from their lagging behind in computer development and the eventual imperative necessity for what was to become known as the internet.

I'm worn out with the who-copied-who argument. It is obvious that some details may have been copied between potential SST manufacturers, but there is one hard fact that held up throughout all those development years, and that is design. Given the technology of the time, how else would an SST aircraft look? An ogival delta wing was the obvious choice. You didn't have to spy on your competitors to figure that one out. Mechanically, these were all very different aircraft with a similar skin.

The 144 is a fascinating example of trying to do too much with too little, too quickly. Where the Concorde had tremendous funding, years of research and, frankly, access to a pool of technology the Soviets lacked, the CCCP attempted to bridge the gaps through industrial espionage, brute force engineering and hand waving some pretty unpleasant flight envelope characteristics. From what I’ve read, Concorde, while operationally and procedurally challenging (primarily due to it moving faster and having more phases of flight), was actually quite easy to fly - meaning inputs resulted in predictable pitch, roll and yaw performance, it was easy to trim and generally flew like a fast, but conventional airplane. In contrast, the 144 was quite a handful to fly. This was especially true on transitioning to final, where managing approach speeds and glide path were very hairy due to the high final approach speed (which was, depending on sources, as much as 30 kn higher than Concorde, and of questionable stability). Flying the 144 required some serious skill and concentration, and it really was underbaked for commercial aviation (which is why the CCCP canceled the program with the fleet of 14 production 144’s having only made 55 commercial passenger flights). But to be fair, the 144 is a gorgeous looking aircraft (frankly, it’s even better looking than the exceptionally sexy Concorde). And, neither of its crashes were due to its flight characteristics or a core design problem: the Paris Air Show crash was pilot error / (possibly politically motivated) recklessness, combined with non-functioning flight control protections (which under normal circumstances wouldn’t have overridden the pilots attempted maneuver); and the second 1978 crash during a pre-delivery test flight, was a result of a ruptured fuel line and subsequent fire in the APU in the port wing. I imagine the 144 was pretty thrilling (bordering on terrifying) to fly, especially if the Tupolev final approach recommendation to NASA, for the last flying TU-144 (77114) featured in this video, of ~194 knots is correct. 194 knots, no thrust reversers and a breaking parachute - very puckerrific, IMHO, in a 109 ton (empty weight) aircraft. It’s also interestingly bizarre that the second, and last, official operator of the 144 was NASA.

The main problem that doomed it was structural problems caused by the completely new construction method they used. The engines could have been improved given time and the system problems resolved given time. Expected in an aircraft that was rushed for Political reasons. Once the structural problems appeared though it was history. Too much money to start all over again. Put it down to experience. Something the USSR got plenty of during its development and construction. The TU160 today will owe a lot to the lessons learned. The most versatile long range supersonic bomber in the World today that can fly high and very fast and very low with terrain following radar and carry by far the biggest bomb load in the world. Not that I will live to see it but odds on it will fly for a long time and remain an effective bomber for another 50 years. Only the B52 and TU95 can claim that distinction. Yes the TU144 was a failure but without it would the TU160 be what it is.

The velocity of sound is not an absolute, unlike the aircraft which has absolute velocity in terms of distance covered in a time frame. Being super sonic means nothing unless you refer to the specific sonic velocity with reference to the medium through which the sound is traversing.
