Damn straight! I'm right behind you at 67 and still rocking and loving it as much today as I did in the 60's and 70's. Songs like this and many others live in infamy. These guys did a great job with it. If this song doesn't get you movin' , you're probably dead. Even my kids and grandchildren love the rock and roll that I've introduced them to. Take care and rock on brother!!

I saw Rare Earth in Vegas 2009 outdoors at the Freemont Experience. The Summer of Love. They were one of the most of bands I have ever seen. They played this song twice. Because the promotor showed up late and she loved this song.

Great sound; much like the original. The drummer sounds a lot like Peter Rivera, and that's a good thing! Don't know why Pete left, but it's sad to see squabbles break up a great band.

LYRICS / TESTO: It was the third of September That day I'll always remember, yes I will 'Cause that was the day that my daddy died I never got a chance to see him Never heard nothin' but bad things about him Momma I'm depending on you to tell me the truth Momma just hung her head and said, son Papa was a rolling stone Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone Papa was a rolling stone (my son, yeah) Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone Hey Momma! Is it true what they say that Papa never worked a day in his life And Momma, some bad talk goin' round town sayin' that Papa had three outside children And another wife, and that ain't right Heard some talk Papa doing some storefront preachin' Talking about saving souls and all the time leechin' Dealing in dirt, and stealing in the name of the Lord Momma just hung her head and said Papa was a rolling stone (my son) Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone Hey Papa was a rolling stone (dad gumma it) Where ever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone Hey Momma I heard Papa called himself a jack-of-all-trades Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal To pay his bills Hey Momma Folks say Papa never was much on thinking Spent most of his time chasing women and drinking Momma I'm depending on you to tell me the truth Momma looked up with a tear in her eye and said, son Papa was a rolling stone (well, well, well, well) Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone (lone, lone, lone, alone) Papa was a rolling stone Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone Wherever he laid his hat was his home And when he died, all he left us was alone My daddy was Papa was a rolling stone (yes he was, yeah) Wherever he laid his hat was his home)

Yes they were Rare Earth, and just so you know ….. Pete left the band twice because of the same stuff he pulled that split the band the first time. When Rare Earth was at the very top of the charts, Peter had a bad case of the lead singer syndrome. He wanted the band to be called Peter Rivera and Rare Earth, and he wanted to fire some of the band members. All the guys were writing and they wanted to sing their own tunes, but Pete wasn't having it. That's just one of many things I'll share that happened. Pete froze the accounts and Rare Earth broke up, which left five men and their families without work. Litigations began and while awaiting trial over the name, it finally come to court in New York. Gil won the name of Rare Earth, and he worked all of his life doing what he loved best, making people happy with his Rare Earth. They were fantastic! They played to sold out crowds all over the world with cheering fans constantly jumping to their feet with joy for love of the music of Rare Earth. Gil was the one and only member of Rare Earth to play on every tune ever recorded, including when they were the Sunliners in the 50s and 60s, of which there were two drummers before Pete. Everyone that was ever around Gil knew that he was a kind, humble man who was one of the greatest sax players I've ever heard, and he had such a beautiful voice. He was a quiet man, but he knew that all the members of a group makes the band, not one person can stand alone. Gil's history and his legacy speaks for itself. His family reads this stuff, and we know that there are (the same) trolls posting the same ugly stuff on anything that’s uploaded regarding Gil. I ask you to refrain from negative comments. Just because he is gone, please don’t think his family won’t defend him.
