Walking around the u-pull junk yard today we may have stumbled on.. well, lets call it a very "rare" WJ. We also pulled a spare third brake light from a Jeep Commander XK and some trim pieces from a Jeep Cherokee XJ.

I worked at a dealer and was inspecting a jeep wrangler that was taken in on trade. The salesman came back all proud that he took in this nice low mile wrangler. But I informed him it was 2wd and showed him no front axle. He lost his shit cause he gave them trade in value as if it was a 4wd. It sat on the lot for two months until they sent it to auction. Lol

FUN FACT: Only in 2004 was a 4X4 WJ offered with AWD and no selectable transfer case/gear select. Like they did on 2005 and up. It was a Quadra-Trac I NV147 On-demand; utilizes a gerotor coupling for improved response; high-range only (does not include neutral or low-range positions). Only on the 2004 WJ was this started. Not saying the one in the pic was a 4X4 that was this set up, just throwing out a fact. I too never understand why someone would buy a 2WD Jeep.

I also watched a video in one of the WJ groups on FB of some show doing a review of the WJ and it suprised me on why it was a negative review. The guy was complaining that the WJ was too capable making it really expensive. Said things like "why would I need 4x4 if I live in a city?" And pointed out it's great for us rural folks, but the majority of their clientele is in big cities.... and it really started making sense why certain jeeps even existed. Why our beloved jeeps started turning into soccer mom vehicles! City people fund them so us broke suckers can off road them when their "pavement princess" years are over! And that's where Chrysler realized jeeps need to have this awkward balance of luxury/sex appeal and still reasonably capable! Because the offroaders could careless about the "frills"... infact most of us will eventually gut them out once we get sick of them... but the city people absolutely need that. But without potential of offroad capabilities then there would be an aftermarket to Sing it's praises and put the legends back Into the jeep lore... all this has to be balanced while not exceeding their main client's wallet capacity.

The ONLY nice thing about a 2wd Jeep is that sometime they put killer axles in the rear. For a year or two the 2WD XJ came with a D44 in the rear if you got the tow package... find one of those in the junk yard and you have found gold! The 2WD WJ V8 has the D44a, but those are far less rare or desirable.

For those who wanted to look cool and show off their "Jeep" but had no clue what 4WD was...and the extra $1,000 for the 4WD option was just too expensive on their 8 year loan on a $14,000 truck LOL. Granted I don't use 4WD very often but when I do it sure saves on a $1,000+ tow bill...only better option would be an M35 Deuce & A Half and someday I'll have one of those as well LOL.

@@DEInTheGarage im in Manchester New Hampshire lol, i only bought it when I lived down south, 11 years ago, but i moved back home to NH a few years ago, since i moved back to NH, i couldn't resist to go crazy with all the WJ part outs because they are so cheap around here, long story short, my 2003 WJ i bought down south 11 years ago now has an 04 overland interior, and i converted it over to 4x4, with a pair of 3.73 Vari-lok axles, and a select trac transfer case, rolling on a set of Goodyear Duratracs, the thing can go anywherein the sand, snow, steep inclines offroad, and through mud, but ive never had it in mud deeper that about a foot or so (its my DD, i like to have fun within reason, but i don't push it to the limits, and dont abuse it too much) I have a bunch of mods and upgrades done to it, but i won't bore you with all that, however i am in the process of building a 4.6 Stroker, i already have a rebuilt 42RE trans that was rebuilt with some improvements and mods for better shifting, and to also handle the power from the stroker. I live right up the street from Golen motors, they are the ones who i use for machining my parts and who i get my advice from if i have any questions. Last year I built a stroker for one of my customers, he brought it to Golen motors to have them perform the break in process, and once it was broken in and ready to drop in and go, the dyno results were 253HP, 306ftlbs toque. Im basically doing the exact same motor build for my stroker, however i will be breaking it in myself. I have another 2 WJs that are both driveable, and a dedicated parts rig, those 3 are all 2004s. Next on the project list is a WJ pickup truck conversion, and making a custom WJ trailer :)

I have a 2015 2wd Ford Expedition. I assumed because it was a King ranch 4wd would be standard. Bought it and couple days later found out it was 2wd wanted to drive it into a pole. It has an open differential and it sucks badly anywhere but on pavement I get stuck all the time. I hate it will most likely trade it in soon. I love my old AWD WJ that jeep goes anywhere.

I bet if they offered them without an engine/transmission the idiots here would buy them for better fuel economy and cheaper to work on...as that's the reason people won't spend the extra few bucks for the 4WD model, costs too much to maintain and you get terrible fuel economy LOL...funny that logic is pretty far fetched unless you have one of the old full size Chevy full time 4x4 trucks that got 6mpg downhill LOL.
