Rashomon is definitely a classic and 9/10 is what I would give it too, which makes it even more wild that out of the 20 Kurosawa films I have seen, its only my 6th favorite. Man was a legend. Solid review.

THE movie that made me love Japanese movies. I saw it as a kid on PBS in 1971 and fell in love with it. PBS would show the Janus collection every weekend. Other films i saw then was Double Suicide. I don't think the medium's reliability is wrong because it is supernatural. That is the exact point. The scary thing is that truth cannot even be found in death. Even the dead see their lives through their own "self." Is a perspective coming from pride? Partly. But it is coming from human limitation also. Rashomon affected filmmaking and the whole idea of perception, truth and man's limitations with understanding self. Hero with Jet Li, Vantage Point, so many others. Yes, i could rave about this movie so much. It created in my twelve year old heart a love of spatial, temporal, and intellectual disorientation, time-wimey, dislocation, etc in film. And that love has stayed with me into my sixties. Rashomon shows how scary humans are and yet how human and frail and confused we all are. If I could recommend a couple....check out Double suicide, Shanso the Bailiff, Ugetsu Monogatari. And oh so many many more. Kurasawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kore-Eda. Great directors all. Oh, if you can see the Chinese movie, Shadow, (2018) check it out. Not for story but for the color or lack thereof. Sooo good.

I have it on bluray now but I also had this on VHS and watched it probably twenty times. One of the first foreign films I became obsessed with.

This one was the first Kurosawa film I saw, many moons ago. For some reason is the only of his samurai films that I don't love, I can appreciate, I loved how the story is told, the cinematography and acting but for some reason i don't find it as engaging as his other films. But i completely see i is considered a masterpiece. I have see twice, maybe the third time will to it for me. Btw you should do a video of your compete criterion collection.
