4 month update: I bought this exact kit because of this video and Im still very happy with this purchase. I have my pi overclocked to 2.1 gigahertz and have a 128gb sd card filled with a couple thousand games and my pi never overheats. ETA prime thanks for your great videos! Anytime something new pi related comes out the first thing I do is check your KZbin channel.

Needing a second Pi-4, I recently got the CanaKit 8GB starter set. Although it came with a cute little plastic case with a rather small 30mm fan, even with the nice heat sinks they provided didn't seem to cool it much at all. I upgraded to a GeekPi Ice-Tower cooler a couple of days later which cut the CPU temperature by over 40C - dropping the average lightly loaded temperatures from over 80C to slightly less than 40C! The other accessories that came with the CanaKit worked perfectly - but the cooling of the originally provided case should have been much better.

I like everything except the RGB (y'all probably consider that a plus). Just more wires I have to cut. But, if you consider Amazon's regular pricing on all that stuff to be "fair", then yeah, it's a (slight) bargain. I'd still have to pick up at least a 3.5A Argon PSU though, so there went my savings.

Not all PSUs are built equally, I've had more trouble with the 3B+ than any other model though. They're very picky about power, my CanaKit adapters sometimes give me that under heavy load too but they work fine with earlier 3Bs and 2Bs.

I ended up getting a used Pi 3B not long ago that came with the heatsinks installed, turns out the heatsinks had some kind of adhesive or thermal pad? Carefully took off the CPU heatsink and added a small dab of thermal paste so it wouldnt stick to the CPU again, it dropped the CPUs temp about 10C or so, more so when using a FAN Hat. So i dont think id use just a thermal pad without a little thermal paste when i get a Pi4

The Graphics Processor Unit in the Pi4 is brand new and the drivers are still being written for it as it is being reverse engineered for open source. Eventually it will be good but for now it's still a little rough around the edges as some of the GPU tasks are still being performed by the CPU. If you want a more polished or better experience in the meantime I'd suggest trying out the 3B+ as it's drivers and firmware have had much more time to mature.

i got this kit. seems pretty decent so far. my only complaint is the sd card reader is usb-c only. and my pc only has regular usb. luckily i have other sd readers anyways, but something to keep in mind to new buyers

Then you didn't get this kit, because the SD card reader is both USB-A and USB-C.

@@Noodles.FreeUkraine nope I did get that kit.. maybe they changed their sd reader. I got it the moment it came out honestly. thats good though :)

@@liquidt3ch Weird, but maybe they just grab what's on hand. Mine can be flipped and used either way. Just USB-C is a bit weird since most people have USB-A still I reckon.

I don't own a PC (I do have a monitor/mouse/keyboard). Can I use this Pi kit alone to download game emulations and later install into an Arcade 1 up mod? Anyone know? Appreciate the help.

Is there a reason why you switched the fan voltage from 5 to 3?

Late reply that probably doesn't need to be answered anymore lol. To reduce fan noise.

Thermal paste will do better than thermal pad, so yes. For me I using Kingpin Cooling KPx on my Pi inside Argon Neo instead of the included thermal pad. Compare to everyone else who used the pad in the Neo. I got 10-15C less than everyone else at 2.1Ghz

I had issues with the 8gb model loading images I found online (arcadepunks and other sites), there is something different in the boot procedure that causes images not to boot. I also noticed the 8gb will boot to a bios screen without an sd card while the 4gb just gives me a black screen. This was enough of a headache for me to stay away from the 8gb model
@W1ldTangent
@W1ldTangent 4 жыл бұрын
That's the newer bootloader eeprom image on the 8GB showing that screen, it's looking for a USB or network source to boot from, chances are your earlier models have never had that updated. And I've found you need to have a fairly recent set of fixup .dat, start .elf and other /boot files, and that sometimes can make a recalcitrant OS image boot up.
