Important Note: Gameplay is faster for the Android gaming portion, the built-in screen recording on Android isn't great. 😢😢 Keep an eye out for my follow-up PS2, GC, and Wii emulation showcases with the Pi 5.

Your videos are excellent. Im a big fan of retro game corps and saw your video on the RP4pro and watched it. You do an excellent job of being extremely informative yet not overwhelming for someone that is a noob like i am to the Raspberry Pie. Impressive little board if you're able to get it for msrp. Ive always read horror stories regarding getting a pie so hopefully the stock issue gets fixed with the latest here

Wow, that's a really kind comment. Thank you for that, it means a lot to me and I'm so happy that you found your way to my channel. I'll actually be meeting Russ in-person during my trip to CES. 🙏 Yea, I'm hoping things will be better for the Pi 5. It's good to see that you can at least pre-order them for an upcoming shipment.

I don't know if it's just because the video was recorded this way, but it looks like Diablo Immortal is running at 10 - 15 FPS. I wouldn't personally consider that playable. I was just a bit confused because said it was running "quite well".
@retrotechdad9 ай бұрын
It’s the built in screen recording of Android, which is why I did off-screen for emulation testing. The game is definitely playable.

IDK how they still can't get the production numbers to meet demand. I ordered mine at the beginning of December. Might get it by the end of April but will probably be early May. Orange Pi 5 is the same price, has double the cores and an integral TPU. I will have to spend around $50 on a Coral TPU and a hat to do any ML projects on the Pi. I was strongly considering canceling my order and getting an Orange Pi 5 but I keep seeing reports of all kinds of issues that would have to be dealt with. I want to use a SBC for development projects, not spend a bunch of time figuring out how to make the SBC work right. I found a decent print file for a case based on the MicroCenter one that gives good access to the GPIO pins. This may be the official case but looks like cooling would suck. The one I'm planning to use has an intake right over the official cooler fan and can exhaust out the GPIO window, giving a better cooling effect. This case has a tiny little slit that has to handle both intake and exhaust which just never works well. There will be considerable hot air recirculation through the cooler. While emulation isn't a major focus of mine, I'm planning to eventually turn the Pi5 into a cyberdeck and it is nice to know I'll be able to do some gaming on it. I was left wondering if DOSBox or some other emulator could allow for older PC games to be emulated...

are there any viable pi-powered gaming handhelds?
@kreatur3able9 ай бұрын
Not yet. This thing is still super new and most people are still having trouble getting one as they are still shipping batches from pre-order. Will be some out eventually I'm sure. Just like with all the previous and weaker pi boards.
@retrotechdad9 ай бұрын
There were some interesting ones for the older models and I'm sure we will see some cool projects come out for the Pi 5. The eventual new version of the compute module will be much more interesting for a handheld project.

Question 🤔 on the pi case, could you maybe turn around the fan ceiling and have both fans in the case? 1 blowing on the CPU and 1 on the heat sink pins? Or would the pins interfere with the fan?

The original Xbox is a hard system to emulate because it has PC hardware. You can upgrade the CPU, RAM, and hard drive in the original Xbox and output games in 720p. I don't think the Raspberry 5 can't emulate the original Xbox.
@uncaringbear9 ай бұрын
The RPI5 strikes a good balance between price and performance but it feels a bit behind the curve compared to the hardware that came out after the RPI4. It's also pretty much impossible to obtain one. I think it'll be really interesting when the compute module version arrives and then we'll start seeing interesting kits for handheld gaming.
@retrotechdad9 ай бұрын
I have very similar thoughts as well. There's been A LOT of competition after the Pi 4. It's also a shame that the 5 is already showing signs of being plagued by the same supply issues.
@harleyn30899 ай бұрын
There are currently 4 vendors on rpilocator that have them in stock for immediate shipment. The two in the UK ship to most of the world including the U.S. It has been in stock continuously since about the 26th of December. It's not a supply issue, it's a demand issue. They have manufactured over half a million so far, it's just extremely popular. If you define competition as "something in the same segment that has any chance of selling as much", the Raspberry Pi has no competition.

how well does minecraft plays on android?
@wopino9 ай бұрын
Dope vid dad. The Pi team needs to bring more to the table when you can get a base odin2 with 8gb ram and a docking station that can play the basically the entire PS2 and Gamecube library. Hell even the upcoming RP4 Pro with the Dimensity D1100 can play way more and is only slightly more expensive than this Pi 5. Right now they're just too behind performance wise compared to everything that's out or coming out shortly. Thanks for the review tho!
@retrotechdad9 ай бұрын
Yea, there's a lot of competition out there nowadays. It's still cool to see what this is doing for $60 but we are definitely getting up there in price which makes one consider other options.

That's the trade off for getting something that has open source drivers at least. The Raspberry Pi is extremely weak, but it's very well supported. I don't think it's a good emulation device at all in this day and age though. Especially since you can't really buy one for the price they're asking, most resellers are selling them for $100 and higher.
@retrotechdad9 ай бұрын
Well said, and it's exactly what made the Pi 4 very popular but like the Pi 5 is already showing, it's extremely difficult to get one for the asking price. The other issue is that now the Pi 5 starting price is higher than what it was with the Pi 4. I am still excited/curious to see where things go with the Pi 5 once more people get their hands on one.
