This guide will step you through getting started with the Raspberry Pi 5 from beginning to end. The Raspberry Pi 5 is the latest model released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and 2-3 times faster than the Pi 4. We'll setup the Pi 5 from unboxing to installing PiOS Desktop and provide some additional tips. More information may be found on the Raspberry Pi 5 Guide: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5

Very welcome, thank you for watching! I don't have a monitor that only has DVI, nor have I tried it with a Pi 5, however this looks like it "should" work: amzn.to/3usMJby . I may be wrong, but I don't think audio is carried over DVI cables, so if it works you'll likely need an external speaker (BT) for the Pi.

Great video man! I needed to be up to date as I was in the RasPi 3 hahah XD, and I needed to assemble some RasPi's 5 for a project. By the way, 6:40 the reason is because that case (as well as the fan that comes with it) assumes you don't have the cooler from the RasPi, so yeah, you have that "extra" heat dissipator. And also in 7:15 that's why you cannot put the plastic part there, because that case isn't designed for the cooler with the heatsink itself ;)) I'll keep watching and giving more feedback :D

Thanks for the vid John, can the Rasberry Pi be used instead of a full blown computer to run VPX via OTG on my Legends Pinball ?

Unfortunately, no. Windows running on the Pi 4 was so-so, Pi 5 should be better but there isn't currently a build for the Pi 5. Even if there was, it's unlikely that it would play VPX well.

Either operating system will be fine, you can also easily swap between the two if you have two microSD cards. Try both and see which one you prefer. Yes, you can use a USB stick instead if you prefer. Make sure it's a USB 3.0 stick for best performance and that you plug it into the blue ports.

After installing PiOS, you could likely just use gparted or DiskGenius to create a new partition. It's not something I've personally done on the Pi 5 but shouldn't be an issue. Here's some older info. on using gparted (with an RG350): wagnerstechtalk.com/rg350tips/#Expand_Partition . Here's something I wrote up sometime back for expanding a partition (you'll need to create the new partition first): wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Expand_a_Partition . I know it's not a perfect answer to your question, but should be enough info. to help get you started if you need it.

Hello All. I first thank the Wagner for this helpful video. I have a question for all. What do you think about the warnings some people mention about the problem of Raspberry Pi supply chain. Is it true or is it a fake ? Because, I plan to develop an IoT project on this board, and I will need 2000 units per year. So, if someone has news about this topic, I'll be really grateful. Anyway, many thanks to all. I wish a long life to Raspberry Pi.

Thank you! There was indeed a time when Pi 4's were very hard (or expensive) to locate, for about 2 years. How that translates to Pi 5 supply chain is not something I know much about. I've heard from some other companies that indicate they'll have more products to ship towards the end of this month (Jan '24). But, that's not a concrete answer for you if you're looking at 2k units per year. If I find anything else out, I'll post back.

Thank you! Yes, if you have another Pi (5/4/3) on your network, shut it down. What's happening is the other Pi on your network likely has the same exact hostname of 'raspberrypi'. You'll want to change the hostname on one of them, but temporarily shutting down the other one will allow it to boot. See #1 here for a bit more info.: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi5/#Troubleshooting

I released a guide+video last week on how to do this, if interested: wagnerstechtalk.com/vms . I've never heard nor run into this specific issue, though close. Only thing that comes to mind : 1) Make sure both ends of the display cable are fully seated. 2) Make sure the microHDMI end is plugged into the port nearest the USB-C power. 3) If neither of the other options fix it, try a different microHDMI to HDMI cable. That's all I can personally think of. I guess one other possibility is using an official Pi5 power adapter (could be cutting off due to low amps). It could be the cable you have has a short in it and is cutting out on you and causing the weirdness. Let me know if you figure it out please, will be good to know the fix. I'd look at an official power adapter and/or microHDMI to HDMI cable to resolve the problem as the "likely" scenarios.

I'll be honest, this isn't an issue I've encountered or had reported to me. However, a few things I can think of worth trying: 1) Make sure both ends of the HDMI cable are fully seated. 2) Make sure, you're booting with the microHDMI cable plugged into the port nearest the USB-C power. 3) If neither of the other two correct the issue, try a different microHDMI to HDMI cable (yours may have a short, confusing the issue). I've actually had a bad cable on a Pi4 and it took me awhile to diagnose the issue. If some of this helps, please let me know what it turned out to be.
