I reall don't get the "this is not the point of the pi"... when the pi came out it costed around 35 and it had 256 ram. Now with that money you can get 2 gb of ram with a quadcore. Plus, IF YOU FANCY, you can get up to 8GB of ram. PLUS! if you're looking for something really basic and efficient there's the zero. So the product range is at the same price when it come out, its more powerful, there are more options plus they added another model for very basic projects. I really really really don't see what's the problem (neither the people that are buying these like hot cakes)

There will always be a market for the cheaper ones, as well as a market for the better performing ones. I'm actually waiting for the better drivers for pi4 before I buy one, because while it is the better hardware, my pi3b is still enough for what it does , at least until the pi 4 has good graphics drivers, so we can see what performance boosts we'll get on n64, ps1, Saturn, Dreamcast, and x86... That's the big thing, if I'm not using it as a video player or an emulation machine, it's just a mid-range gaming / general purpose computer when I don't want to use my high end computer or smartphone.
@lifehacker1234 жыл бұрын
I just don't see the point of a 8GB version. That is just far too much RAM for a Pi 4. Before you are even close to filling up the 4GB's RAM, something else will be far more overloaded, probably the CPU is going to bottleneck really hard far before the RAM does. I mean, it's cool that you can create a 4GB RAM disk and still have 4GB RAM left, sure. But what are you going to do with that? There is no scenario where the CPU now wouldn't be one huge bottle neck.

I don't necessarily get the 8gb. But the 4gb is amazing for what I use it for. I use the Pi's for tuning cars. Instead of a laptop I have them and touchscreens installed in racecars running tuning software and it's insane how good it works. The pi4 works better and is actually faster at on the fly tuning than my cheap laptop. I'm assuming it's because if the type of math the CPU needs to do. But a race dash can cost $1000-$2000. A pi, touchscreens some cleaver install and some 3d prints can reduce this to less than $200 and it works better!!!! But the 8gb? A bit useless IMO for such a low powered CPU.

As a big fan of the Raspberry Pi series, I could not resist buying a Pi 4 (8GB model) even though I have been using the 4GB model since its release. Although I agree that there really is not much different about this new model (except with more memory overhead for some programs), I did notice a big difference between my 4GB and 8GB models in overclocking. It seems that my 8GB model is able to overclock much higher than my 4GB model! My old 4GB model (with ICE cooler) was able to manage up to 2300Mhz on the CPU and 750Mhz on the GPU (force turbo set to 1 and overvolt set to 9). It was stable in emulation, desktop usage, and sysbench, but I saw immediate crashes when running the stress-ng benchmark. To my surprise, when I loaded the same config settings to my 8GB model (also equipped with ICE cooler) it was fully stable at 2.3Ghz in stress-ng with temps never rising above 50 deg C. With the enthusiast in me being greedy, I decided to put my shiny new Pi 4 on the line for science, and I pushed it up to 2.4Ghz and was shocked to see it still fully stable in stress testing with no thermal or power throttling at all. It may be just me winning the silicon lottery with this unit, but I suspect firmware updates since release and maybe some of the power managements circuitry changes made to the 8GB may have improved power efficiency enough to allow for higher overclocks compared to the initial release models. I'm curious to see if anyone else has had similar experiences?

Fact if that there is a lot of optimization that are going to be done on 64bit version in the coming months. We might also see better GPU drivers for this. So, I beleive that Ram consumption should get optimised. On a more practical note. I would like to see how many Chrome tabs I can open on 4GB vs 8GB version. I won't include rendering or converting app in this mix as they are designed to use max cpu already and thus would defeat the purpose of actual usage senario. And yes I do have more then 100 tabs on Firefox in my desktop. And a lot of people usually have 30+ tabs in there daily drivers.. So, its not far fetched.

Wanted to build a gamer for my Grandson, but it just might be my new media server if any game problems. How did the pi run gamecube? Good or bad? Guess i`ll find out. Will it run windows 10? Thanks for sharing ETA Prime.

Almost no games over ps1 I would say it will barely if at all run gamecube games also no it will not run 10, even if it did you cannot use most 64bit applications and all desktop apps will he sluggish.

I have had two raspberry pi 4 die, with hdmi issues, I managed to send one back, it would have Hurt more at this price, this is an old pi, even though it's much more powerful than the pi3, it only does tasks slightly better, if you need a pi 4, the 2gb model is a bargain, but a new pi or revised pi should be round the corner some time soon, I will be happy to pick up that in its 8 GB variation, hopefully it will be with working GPU drivers or even a improved GPU.
@crystalchaos4624 жыл бұрын
I think I'm still good with my 4GB that I just purchased. I preordered a NexDock Touch and was hoping to pair the two and use Raspbian/RetroPie on separate microSD cards. the subpar KZbin video playback in Chromium and Firefox is kind of a deal breaker knowing I have Samsung DeX on my S10+ too; which runs flawless. 8Gb isn't going to make a difference. It's probably just going to be a standalone RetroPie at this point. Would you recommend flashing LibreElec to another card or adding Kodi directly to my RetroPie build?

What about just watching 1080p 60fps videos on KZbin on it's own would it be able to handle that or would the CPU be the issue

I'm just about to get my first pi and there's one thing I'd like to know because I can't really find any information on this. Can they handle ANY PC games? As in steam games that require low usage, not gta 5 or COD games. Something sensible like portal or the stanley parable. Otherwise how well would/does it handle video files at 720p and videos files at 480x242? If you could answer any of those or point me to a site where I can find the information myself that would be great. Thanks for responding when you're able.

Video files: The PI4 has a hardware decoder that can decode 1080p (8Bit) H264/AVC and 4k (10Bit) H265/HEVC. For other formats, it depends on the efficiency of the software decoder. For example, I’m not sure if it can handle 720p video, if that 720p video is encoded as a 12 Bit HDR video in AV1 format (note: that is A V one, not an upper case I as in AVI), as there is no efficient decoder available for that profile currently. (But that is a professional-grade settings for the latest cutting-edge format). So for most common video formats, 1080p videos should be a "yes, it can do it". Gaming: Not so much. Keep in mind: Most proprietary, closed source games (the ones you typically buy from stores) are pre-compiled for x86 processors. To run these on ARM processors, each single x86 CPU instruction has to be translated from x86 to ARM live in real-time. Expect the PI to run such applications like if it were a 300-400 MHz Intel CPU. (Emulating x86 and x86_64 is hard.) Open source games are a bit different story, as the source code can be compiled to native ARM instructions, so no real-time translation has to be performed. Those will run way better, but still not really well, as the GPU part is weak. And the GPU does not support newer/modern OpenGL versions, which rules out many of those open games. It does provide Vulkan 1.1, though. But that’s not used by many of those games at the moment, so it doesn’t really help. If you have a gaming PC, you can install the Steam Link application on the Pi, connect both via a GBit Ethernet connection and stream your games onto the Pi. That will work fine. Another Tip: Get yourself a fast MicroSD card or USB3 SSD, otherwise your experience with this device will suffer. You don’t want your PC to boot of a medium that does 4MB/s read/write speeds, do you?

does it mean that the ram is configured in single channel mode ? that's sad .. same amount in 2x4gb would be a c ompletely different story

If I open Chrome with a few Google sites open (specifically gmail google docs and youtube), together with VS Code and another app, I am pushing the RAM and cache on my 4GB Raspi 4, and take a performance hit. I think that the 8GB model will work better for me, but I'll have to wait. I've only had my 4B model a couple months.

If you have the 4gb it’s not a big deal to upgrade , the upgrade will be good if they first upgrade the cpu and add 3D acceleration . Even the 2gb is more than enough for 95% of users of the pi. Next upgrade the cpu gpu and add nvme or sata III connector

@UnlimitedRicePudding_4 жыл бұрын
I brought up a similar point on the Raspberry Pi reddit page. I feel like the original goal of the board is getting a bit lost. Even if you're thinking of getting the pi as a cheap desktop machine, you could get way more bang for your buck from a small second hand tower on eBay, for just a little bit more money. Not only that, but you could get a second hand pc with a processor that doesn't tie you down to ARM. As good as box 86 is, there's a lot of applications it can't run which would be very beneficial. The main thing on the new model is, while the RAM has increased, the power from the CPU hasn't.
@typxxilps4 жыл бұрын
@@UnlimitedRicePudding_ guess what: they offerred just what customers had been askinf for and sales figures had shown them too the more ram the better the sales figures What had the by far longest delivery time? the 4 gb version due to high demand not low production And the 1 GB version were always in stock ... You can buy whatever you want and of cause they did not loose their focus cause that is always what customers want cause otherwise a foundation will dy pretty soon. The poor child from africa can still get a zero for cheap and more powerfull and pi 3 that is cheaper than a pi 4 with 1 GB and less power hungry. Next step is 64 bit and then they will be working on a more powerfull zero and m 0.2 sata support throughout the whole line I guess. From there on they might go for exchangeable RAM and maybe a different graphic, a dedicated one as option if they find space to place

@someone3214 жыл бұрын
Techman application support. That simple. I personally don’t like windows but I’d appreciate it in a computer due to the fact that a hell of a lot of applications are windows only. Not to mention that the ARM architecture makes matters even worse as many programs don’t even support it and are closed source, so you won’t even be able to compile them yourself.

I wont be upgrading, my 4gb is never starved for ram. I think the only use for 8gb model is in a server cluster. With hardware accelerated video, and android/ ubuntu/ retropie support.

Well, maybe someone cares about the redesigned power delivery to have more power for the external devices... Also we have seen this on pcs already: 64bit version of the programs takes more RAM, 2gb will struggle soon. Furthermore when overclocked the 4gb might become the bottleneck of the desktop experience. My question is: what do you do to max out ram in your server? I run many things on my rpi2 and is at only 300-400mb of ram usage

Better overclocker, can handle higher power. 4GB model may reboot with all 4 vcore load. The 8GB pi has 50% higher PMIC frequency, thus delivering more amperage. The added memory can be used for some server, Minecraft etc.
