That NFC mini cartridge system is such an adorable solution. I love this.
@AdhamOhm

From what I see, the device is running a program called Emulation Station which has an interface to scroll through the games list and play them from there. All the NFC cartridges do is load a game automatically without having to go through the Emulation Station menu. So a cartridge isn't needed to play a game, it just adds a cool feature.

I am completely and utterly blown away. This is one of the very best Pi "retro" style mods I've ever seen and, as much as I love how the NES Classic Edition looks, this exceeds it in every single way. The NFC cart idea is... well... I'd say it was magical but that would be an understatement :D Well done, man, seriously.

+Daniel Salazar well i dont think it would be any different then what Nintendo is doing now. it's only the case and how the to access the games that's different. I'm pretty sure it would cost around the same for Nintendo to manufacture everything.
@TheBaldr

mini carts would have pushed the price tag up if sold as a bundle, or separately people would have complained about Nintendo being greedy, knowing they could fit the library on the console. Also the complaints that they are too small and easy to lose.

I don't think they wanted to compete with their own Virtual Console platform though. Plus, after offering 30 games for $60 (hardware included) it would have seemed overpriced to add new NES games for $5 each. I think they just wanted some quick revenue this holiday season to make up for the lack of software. It's also a nice reminder of why many of us loved Nintendo in the first place. I could also see them releasing new models of this like the Atari Flashback, which is now on it's 7th incarnation. They add more and more games each time.
@Sarge92

videogameobsession compete with it? your buying THERE console how could buying a nintendo console to plaY nintendo nes games on it possibly hurt there virtual console series infact it would boost the sales of it cause people would have better access to it they could take this to hotels and other places and have access to there virtual console titles they could even later release a cheap portable to play them on if anything this would boost the virtual console sales by bring in those who want to play old titles but dont wanna fork out the money for a wii

This is indeed one of the coolest projects I've seen using Raspberry Pi in my opinion! I know there are those big complicated stuff, but this one looks so simple and but so cool!!! I love the way it makes me feels like "Gosh! I could try to follow the tutorials and make one on my own!" But then you realize you have no access to all involved technology for an affordable price here in your country. Maybe we should pay more taxes to the government... oh wait... Too bad... Leave it to a fan to show the big boys how it's done! Nintendo is so worried about piracy that they fail to see how desirable having mini carts like this would be. Sure there would be people who exploit the NFC tag to play different games, but people already have that option now. What they don't have is tiny replica carts that are infinitely cool. As usual Nintendo can't ever make anything nice because they've always got their head up their ass. BTW AMAZING WORK!
@brickman409

I bet Nintendo could figure out how to encrypt the NFC carts like they did with Amiibos. They could even make it so that putting an Amiibo on top of it could launch a game!

To be fair, Nintendo doesn't own the rights to many of the NES library, which they would need to obtain before they could legally release them. I'm thinking the NES classic is a test product that they are releasing to see if other products like it will be profitable. If it does well, buying up the rights to more games may make sense to them.
@OldsXCool
@OldsXCool 8 жыл бұрын
Joe Snes Uh Nintendo only owns half of the games that are going to be installed on the mini NES. The rest are from Konami, Capcom, Tecmo, and Namco. They still need licenses to distribute digitally which they obviously have obtained. However the game selection has nothing to do with my complaint against the mini NES. It's the fact that it's just a relatively expensive plug n' play device that emulates the NES and can only play the games that are pre-installed. If they made something like the guy did in this video I wouldn't even think twice about buying it. But instead of making it nice like this, they took the easy, low effort cash grab instead.
8 жыл бұрын
It's obvious you're only thinking for yourself and not the general audience which are the majority of people who will buy the NES Mini. What was shown here is cool yea, but the average consumer would probably see it as daunting and would be confused, they just want something simple which Nintendo's product is. I hope this post made sense.
@OldsXCool
@OldsXCool 8 жыл бұрын
MultiMrGi No if I were thinking about myself I would have just said screw Nintendo like I usually do. There is no question that the mini NES will sell. That much is for certain. But you can't tell me that consumers would find it daunting to have extra cartridges that can be bought. The mini NES is targeted at nostalgic gamers. I can't see many non-gamers or children wanting one. It looks like a NES for a reason and has a perfect replica controller for a reason. It's a cheap trip down memory lane for some, but other than that it will be on the shelves of hardcore collectors everywhere. Most of them will probably stay unopened. Nobody would be confused. We're not talking about the Wii U here.

Can I ask what you had to study to be able to build stuff like this? I'd love to learn how to do this kind of thing, for whatever ideas I have, but I really don't know where to start the learning process: Is it basic engineering you studied first (computer, electrical, mechanical, whatever), or programming, or something else, etc. How were you able to know where to start on a path that has led you to a point where you know everything you need to know to be able to build a fully functioning mini-NES? It boggles my mind, and I'd genuinely love some tips on where to start learning the skill-sets required to do this kind of stuff-and not specific to making a mini-NES but just building hardware and stuff like this in general. Feel free to email me privately if you want. I assume you can do that directly on KZbin, but if not you can just go to my blog and use the contact form to email me directly: www.inceptional.com/email_kirk/

I've always enjoyed tinkering and playing about with things to find out how they worked. Electronics has long been a hobby of mine and if you read enough/watch enough youtube videos on the subject, you'll end up remembering something cool that somebody did or wrote about, and that gives you a place to start looking for information. That's why I want to share the things that I make, because I've so often been inspired and learned from other people's work. It would be nice to think that someone else can do the same looking at something I made :)
@inceptional
@inceptional 8 жыл бұрын
daftmike So, is there a place to start that you could recommend, like beginner-level videos or books on electronic engineering or something like that? And I really do mean "beginner"-level-like, I'm a 40 year old child and don't know anything right now, but I want to learn. I'm so ignorant of what I need to know that I don't even know where to start. I mean, did you study circuit board design for example, so you'd know how to mess around with actual circuits and stuff? I'm trying to figure out how to be someone like Ralph Baer, where one day I'll be able to sit there and think of cool ideas for little gadgets and computer devices I'd like to make and then actually be able to go out and build working versions of them. Maybe part of the secret is having enough money to be able just try stuff and learn as you go (you know, buy circuits boards and all the equipment and tinker around soldering parts and stuff)-sadly, I don't have any money-and the rest is just a matter of doing it because you can and there's little to lose, I guess.
@daftmike

KZbin is a great resource, watch videos that interest you and search for the things that you want to learn more about. I didn't formally study anything like this, I'm not an expert in anything. I just read about things that other people have done and play around, it's just my hobby.

This is so cool! Nintendo should've done this with their Mini NES! Imagine, you can get an amiibo NES cart of Super Mario Bros. and put it into the Mini NES! I admire your work on this. Well done!!!

Wow! I am astounded! No, really! This is quality work, eye for detail and very creative work on the mini-NFC cartridges. Absolutely amazing! I modded an original SNES console with a Raspi inside (video in my channel). I'd like to think i did a decent job, but compared to this i look like a neanderthal holding a rock in one hand and a club in the other trying to create something. Mad props for this stunning piece of work!

With all the energy and effort to make such a remarkable retro NES you might want to consider putting the finishing touch of making a full-sized, usable NES controller. Your console is nearly perfect!

Now this is just very cool indeed. And, in all honesty, it's actually closer to what I imagined when I often talked about Nintendo re-releasing its old and classic consoles but with a few small tweaks here and there to make sense in modern times (like making the actual consoles smaller, adding display connections for modern TVs, and that kind of stuff). It all makes great sense to me, other than scaling the controller. Just go with a normal-sized controller, because you actually have to use that thing to play the games, and you'd obviously want it to be comfortable and practical. Aside from that one niggle with the overall idea, it's pretty frikin' awesome.

I'm in love with the little NFC carts. The whole thing is so good I actually cringed every time you took a cart out without turning the power completely off even though I know the carts are just using NFC and aren't actually connected to anything inside the console.

This is just amazing! I would pay a good amount of money if this was a commercial product. This is how Nintendo should have done it. They even could have sold those cartridges separately.
