Thank you for this. Very interesting. Having a narrowboat and a daughter who should be taking computing A level (but they have cancelled the exams) I will make her watch this and then she can make one for our narrowboat.

I like the suitcase computer! What a clever idea. Squeak obviously approves. I don't know if the case is easy to open - but it would have been great to show what a Raspberry Pi actually looks like. They are great little devices, so versatile - and really affordable!

Well I clicked on as I thought I was going to see you make a raspberry pie ha ha, I don’t know anything about gaming, I didn’t really understand a lot, but found this video really interesting and loved it all neat and tidy in the old retro case :)
@rwbimbie58544 жыл бұрын
Raspberry Pi is a computer. One of the things it can do is play lower end games, but its is fine for FACEBOOK, TWITTER, NETFLIX, KZbin, web surfing, and simple spreadsheets/documents. It will happily run a full size keyboard & mouse, with a 60" hdtv display if thats what you want to use as a screen

I watch all my you tube through chromecast brilliant little thing. Seeing the Atari brought back memories, I can’t even remember what games they had, if I remember right there was a tape player that had the games on it. I have not played a video game for about 10 years, I was hooked on touring cars about 30 years ago, I even had the steering wheel and peddles lol

You can buy a 12v laptop charger very easily. Just google “12v laptop charger eu” to account for the euro plug. They come in a bunch of different varieties and capabilities. If you have a particular computer model you need it for, add the make and model in the google search also.

I already have a 12v laptop charger thanks, the Pi is just a more effecient way to do office work.

I use a Pi3 for Kplex NMEA0183 routing to wifi so I can opencpn on any device. I didn't have much luck with the Pi4. It just keeps freezing and lots of issues with Wifi. Just orderd my NUC with a 12V DCDC converter.

Hi Sebastian! I might have to stop calling you the secret hairy man if this keeps up :) You can buy 12V-19V DC-DC converters for the laptop pretty easily on ebay and those are pretty efficient. I suggest buying one that is potted into a big metal heatsink rather than the slightly cheaper ones in a little tin box. I used to run my gaming laptop off one.
@SebGDay4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mozi! Thanks.. now googling dc -dc converters! I run my laptop with a 60w dc adapter.. and I think that it's actually just a step-up dv -dc converter!
@MalawisLilleKanal4 жыл бұрын
@@SebGDay The 12V-19V converter can also be used for many monitors. There are also 12V ATX PSU (Power Supply Unit) for regular desktop-computers to be found. Bonusinfo: There is a new PSU-standard on it's way for desktops where the motherboard only requires 12V. It's called ATX12VO and is likely to become common in 2021-2022. Should go perfectly with a build based on Micro-ATX or mini-ITX.

She keeps saying they don't make what she needs... I keep telling her they do, but she seems to want to be stubborn and keep pushing her false narrative. lol I'm glad to see she finally got a Raspberry Pi though. I first told her about it a couple of years ago. That was pretty clever assembling it all in an overnight bag. Just having the lid open to use it should keep the screen cool enough. When I mentioned it to her, I was talking about mounting it to the cabinet in the boat so it would actually be built in. This way can be more portable though. As an engineer, I design and build computers and entire networks.

Think people would be interested in some of the technical aspects of your implementation. Others have put in details of their set-ups. I have a couple of fairly high end audio systems which have been (commercially) built around the Pi. If you are limited by having to use 12v then I guess this is a way of building fairly useful solutions.

I will second what urbanimage said about using a NUC if you need a more powerful PC, what I have also had luck with is the Atomic PI which is a SBC based off of boards from a failed kickstart project ( so recycling/reuse), They dont have the support of the raspberry PIs but they have more power and can run windows...
@curryconsult4 жыл бұрын
I hope you mean Raspberry Pi ;) I’ve been using them since the original model and now have 5 or 6 running most of the time doing all kinds of jobs. The new pi4 will make an excellent low power computer for those who have to watch their power consumption. Enjoy!
@SebGDay4 жыл бұрын
The Pi4 does look interesting!
@richardboulanger33934 жыл бұрын
How large of an SD card did you use for all of those emulators and such? I take it that the Pi doesn't have much onboard memory, so you use the SD as a hard drive?
@SebGDay4 жыл бұрын
It has a 64gb sd card as the hard drive, an excessive amount of space!

@@SebGDay Thanks! Which model Raspberry Pi did you use? Are there similar options for Arduinos?
@SebGDay4 жыл бұрын
@@richardboulanger3393 Raspberry Pi 3B+, it was the highest spec at the time. I would imagine the Arduinos would operate the the same way for storage but I don't have any hands on experience with them!

If your computing requirements are modest this is a sensible solution. I had looked at building a more powerful 12v computer myself but it's simply a false economy... if you want something more capable you are better off using regular laptops and investing your money in power generation.
@Dave-bu6bc4 жыл бұрын
There's lots of similar small computers out there at similar prices, some with quite a bit more processing power like Odroid's 8 core XU4.
@urbanimage4 жыл бұрын
Intetesting video. It depends on what you want to run, but for something more powerful you can run an Intel NUC i3 computer on 12 volts. These are pretty power efficient too. NUC's with i5 or i7 in theory should run off 12 to 19 volts, but I don't have any first-hand experience with those.
@bobham9194 жыл бұрын
i have an i7 without a fan. it don't have a battery, no monitor, no key board, no mouse. all is external. it does not multi task so well. i think its not multi thread. how does it compare to that pi?

seeing this put a big 😊 on my face! i'd never thought of putting a pi in a suitcase! brilliant! one question, how do you handle heat from the screen (is there any?!) i know my pi 3+ gets a bit warm im guessing your pi is nice and cool where you have it, the screen tho?? i love the rpi's! they are bril! ive got 6! (yes six!) one is a media/web server, another is an ad blocker (called pi hole! its on an old rpi 2b), another rpi 3 is our file server, a retropi (yay!), one's my workstation, and the other is an experimental setups pi (for checking out pi cctv setups for example!) keep these and others coming! 😊
@SebGDay4 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff, i've never noticed the screen overheating I think it's very efficient! The Pi is normally fine as well, that's why I paid a little extra for the aluminium flikr case as it acts as a heat sink. Sounds like you're deep in the Pi hole!
@TelstarFirst4 жыл бұрын
Ironically nearly all computers are 12v anyway used from a stepped down mains transformer, the SSD ones are usually 5v. All you need is a 12v supply for running laptops in a car, it's the power supply that needs changing not the computer.
