Russell and City Girl the corn was too long on the stalk and it started to convert into seed corn , you should pick the corn when the silk on the top dries out. Long before the husk turns brown the husk should be still green. As long as the silk is dry it's ready for harvest. And you are correct nothing beats a home grown tomato
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin4 күн бұрын
Yeah that's the one vegetable we truly missed the boat on. I picked one piece too early and the 2nd piece way too late. Next year we'll try harder.
@windchimerainbow1364 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, that the husks should be greener. I've grown a lot of corn in my life, but the last time was in the 1970s. I've forgotten many how-to's, until someone jogs my memory. Also, if the husks are still green, you can use them as wraps for grills and bakes, right? Including tamales. I love Mexican food. Heck, I love most all cuisines... sans any sugar, and with very limited salt.

Some good advice on the corn and nettle. Also to take the sting out, burdock leaf rubbed on the area, making sure you get the "juices" from the plant on your skin and it will take the sting away. Burdock grows near stinging nettle so there should be some nearby. Your beans were very mature for eating as well. Just like the corn was.

Baking soda and water neutralizes the sting of nettle, but on the other hand it's also one of the most nutritious plants to eat. The stingers go away after blanching for 3 to 4 minutes then drain it, pat dry let it cool and add to salads or eat like spinach.

Corn issue. You harvested it too late. They are ready when the silks turn brown. The kernels will be sweet at this point. They then start to get starchy and a bit drier. Chilling in a fridge will slow that process right down. So harvest earlier and keep in the fridge. I went through the same thing when I first grew corn 😊
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin4 күн бұрын
So you can harvest before it's ready and store it in the fridge and the kernels still develop?
@colingreenwood9873 күн бұрын
@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin . No. The kernels are ready and sweet when the silks first die off. The outer cover is still green. Once you have harvested them, store in the fridge so they dont go hard and starchy like the one you tried to eat the other day. Being chilled slows down the process where the sugars turn to starch. When they grow corn to turn into silage for cows, they harvest them way late, but on purpose as the nutrient level is higher for the cattle after the kernels have turned hard and starchy and not suitable for us to eat. You can gently open one up whilst its still attached to the plant, just to check the kernels. Just close it back up if they are not quite ready. I will watch with interest next year to see how you go. Regards Colin from Melbourne Australia

How to make nettle fertilizer? Nettle slurry is easy to make. Put the cut nettle into a bucket and pour water (up to about 2/3 of the capacity). The bucket should be covered with gauze to allow air to enter. The fertilizer will foam during fermentation, so don't fill the bucket all the way to the brim with water. Leave the dish in a safe and shady place for 2-3 weeks. Liquid manure should be stirred daily. It happens that the fertilizer can be ready faster, e.g. after a week, especially when it is warm and the fermentation process accelerates. The dark color of the water and the lack of foam in the bucket means the end of fermentation and the fertilizer is ready for use. The only downside of liquid manure is its smell - it has a very unpleasant smell, which can be slightly weakened by adding a solution of valerian or basalt powder. Some people add blooming valerian to cancel out the smell.

Nettle as compost Freshly harvested nettle can also be used as a mulch for vegetables - it improves soil structure and increases yield. It is enough to put a thick layer of nettle (about 3-5 cm) between rows of tomatoes or cucumbers. Nettle can also be added to compost or watered with nettle extract. The ingredients contained in nettle accelerate the formation of compost and also enrich it with nutrients.

What are you going to do the extra panels that you took off.
