IRB make the rules, the teams play within them. No one can say that rugby is not far more entertaining across the entire playing field that it ever has been. The forwards becoming an additional key element of the game, more so than before, just makes it that much more interesting. We need more coaches to be innovative, within the rules. Those that don’t have the capacity to do so will have to follow those that do and not just complain about it not being in the spirit of the game etc. etc. Credit to the Springboks, that display great sportsmanship both on and off the field, while being innovative, exciting to watch and real proffesionals.

Bill is vocal on the traditions of rugby, yet World Rugby seems determined to undermine the value of the big boys. They were bleating about mauls and wanting to do away with them, then it was taking a scrum from a free kick, now they want to attack the use of forward substitutions. Even before this there was heavy penalisation around clearing of rucks. A desire to soften the game under the pretence of safety. He has even argued safety when it comes to the bomb squad. There is nothing stopping other teams from using a bomb squad too, so the playing field is level. Rugby has become more tactical in the modern era, this innovative use of substitutions is part of those tactics.

In Beaumont’s vision of old, where was player safety in that scenario? Did tired players end up injuring themselves more frequently as they tired? Other than minnows, who don’t and didn’t have depth. The scores became one-sided after sides with more depth were able to employ impact players, or finishers as Eddie Jones called them. To back up his sentimental claims, I would like to see the stats on tier 1 and tier 2 team matches. What were the scores at halftime, at 60 minutes and the end. I am not sure the All Blacks or the Springboks waited just for the final quarter to run rampant on their opponents.

1. It makes the game more exciting. Last 20 minutes is less likely to be solely ruled by giving up big mistakes & 1on1 mismatches. 2. It's opens a match up to more of the overall roster. Just bc last quarter is currently dominated by subbing power forwards doesn't mean it won't eventually be countered. 3. The game will be accessible by some athletes who would never have been able to compete at top play which traditionally preferred stamina over explosiveness.

I remember when England were working up to their world cup win and won match after match. Man their play was turgid, but they won. Eventually rules wrre tweeked because they won by kicking goals, a stone wall defence and strangling the game to death. In short they won because of a quirk that they could exploit. This really isn't different, SA have a once in a generation dominance in one adpect of the game, muscle mass and the rules will get tweeked. My point is this isn't personal. World Rugby always have tweeked the rules to keep a level playing field and the Status quo

By the way, Beaumont is stepping down and law changes are not made by one man but by consensus. If SA want to have a World Series Rugby tournament (participants SA only) that’s fine but don’t expect everyone else to want to watch your piano shifters and penalty kickers for entertainment. Before long Rassie will be instructing players in tight games to drop the ball so that the pack can then get a penalty from the resultant scrum. Legal? Yes but not what the game is about.
