Thanks for sharing, it really sucks when we lose an animal. We lost one of our leopard gecko last year. We moved him into a bioactive setup and a couple of months later he crashed. No idea if the change caused it but nothing indicated that was the cause. I think it just caused us to be even more diligent in our keeping. Best of wishes!

People definitely need to talk about their negative experiences within the hobby to help support each other and talk about ways to improve their husbandry and keeping. I’ve got a 3 year old eastern long neck who had a pretty rough start at life. Shortly after getting him I noticed that his skin had turned white around his mouth which ended up being a bacterial infection which spread into his immune system. For about a year and a half I had to inject him with anti biotics every six months as the infection kept resurfacing, and after a lot of time and money spent on the turtle I can happily say he is now in great health. Although things turned out well with him, that time definitely made me reconsider whether or not I wanted to continue owning reptiles, but I’m very glad I stuck it out and am loving the hobby now more than ever

Hey mate, thanks for talking about the negative experiences and your right, having that space is super important cause it helps us be better carers for these incredible animals. I'm pretty new the the whole hobby with have two little Strophurus Ciliaris Aberrans that I've been looking after them for 2-3 months, I love them so much it hurts. I've found it really hard cause they seem pretty scared of me, I'm trying to balance between keeping them happy but also being okay with my presence. I really enjoy watching them and i will often throughout the day/night sit there and look at them. They have started retreating into a bit of bark that I cant see them in, I feel guilty cause all I want to do is watch them exist but I doubt that they understand that. I'm always open to advise on building that relationship ☺ Regardless of any advise I am very grateful for your video, sending you lots of love and best of luck to your beautiful family that you care for each day 💚🦎🌳

I'm so sorry to hear mate, keep going, the gtps with enlarged hearts, keep them going on smaller food as you said, fingers crossed they make it! Maybe stress caused the geckos to pass? The worst experience i had was two of my favourite snakes passed away with in a few weeks for each other. Had a little jag that was going perfectly and one day opened the tub and it had passed. 2 weeks later one of my beautiful striped jungles passed, no idea why. That SAME year i had my first clutch of carpets. zebra jag x zebra, 12 gorgeous eggs. Mid way through the incubation the incubator spiked up the tempreture (was one of those exoterra ones). the babies hatched about 3 weeks after, 11 out of 12 were severly kinked. I had to euthanise all 11... had a few that were looking like they would make it but they didnt. had 1 baby that was healthy and i sold her to a friend. To be honest i nearly sold all my reptiles. I was so devestated becuase it all happened within a month of each other. And as you said, it all comes in one go. But i kept with it and had a beautiful clutch of 14 babies (carpets). Keep going mate, best of luck! I would also love to see the build!

Your honesty inspires us novices. The fact that your failures are portrayed in public shows the problem that every keeper has and we can all learn from each other's mistakes because no one is doing it perfect (captivity is not the wild). Back when I was keeping a collection, I put a rat in the aviary with my awesome diamond pythons which were good eaters bases on a outside influences but the problem was me not listening to myself and the knowledge I had collected from multiple sources. Had a pair of Saltuarius moritzi, and lost the male two years ago. Literally found it frozen in position halfway through a moult and still clinging to the wall of the enclosure. Didn't realise it was dead at first, but wondered why it wasn't moving, and poked it. It was gone. Still no idea what happened. Suspect a congenital issue that just took a long time to finally do the little guy in. Still looking for a male to replace it. Female's still going strong at least.

Sorry for your losses man. I would definitely consider the possibility of a virus, maybe a Nidovirus strain or something similar. You can have a situation like yours where amongst multiple animals within the same species and/or enclosure, some individuals pass really fast when they were otherwise looking fine, while other individuals appear completely or mostly unaffected, these individuals are sometimes asymptomatic carriers. This is a very common problem with Nidovirus amongst pythons, especially chondros, but there are tons of Nido strains that affect various reptile species and a foreign strain can wipe out otherwise healthy animals who have no natural immunity to it.

Ive been thinking about this. Obviously Geckoes will occasionally lick the substrate in a similar way to dragons. They will also lick drops of water off of it. I have found with tile pointing once its cured if you spray water on it it seems to give off some sort of residue. Do you wash the pointing down with water once its cured? Once I saw this I made sure i wash down a new enclosure build before introducing inhabitants. Just a thought.

Some hard times there mate. Hopefully the worse is gone and more good things will happen in the future. Even though I would like to see the enclosure build I would feel the same if I had an animal passed away just after I made a video. I’ll be at the Penrith reptile expo in February. Highly unlikely I’ll get anything but I’ve said that before and came home with something but I’ll be there. I’ve had a few negatives with my reptiles besides them passing away. I’ve had mites come through the collection 3 times now in the past 2 years. The fist time was from a new animal I believe then the second and third time I have no clue. Molly my jungle has had RI twice and had surgery to remove some kind of growth in her stomach. My first bearded dragon Lucy prolapsed after laying 41 eggs one year. Bluey and Bo two of my eastern blue tongues who are brothers were kept in the same enclosure together for 8 years and one day decided to fight each other, to add to that it was during when I had my HSC so that was a nightmare.

Congrats on the babies. Sorry about the crappy stuff! My son tells me I should go travel and I say, and leave my animals? He doesn't get why I can't just leave them or even say move to Oz! NO! These are my babies, my family! As far as bad experiences. My first snake, my brother in law came over checked him out, put him in the enclosure and didn't push the lid over the last part (locking system) my snake got out. We didn't even think to look for it! That was ignorant! We assumed that since it was July, very hot out, that he went outside and might have survived. We should have looked! I loved Jafar! Now I know tricks and not to give up and to be the one that gets my animals out and puts them back. Speaking of that, my husband has not latched our male crested gecko's enclosure a few times! Each time he gets out. It took a week or so to find him the first time. Each time after I was even more livid! Thank goodness my husband isn't the best at keeping crickets where they belong so the gecho likely had food ;) Luckily, we haven't lost any reptiles. Just dogs and cats as they were older.

Darker surfaces will retain heat longer. This build from what I can see was darker than the usual Pilbara red type setups you and Coop tend to construct. Perhaps it retained heat too much?
@BeachesScalyBeasts3 жыл бұрын
Certainly a good thought mate. They tend to temp gun the same between that enclosure/fimbria/aberrans even when the lights are out, so it’s got me a little puzzled. I’ll keep a closer eye on that though and see if there’s a longer hold though. Might just have to stay up later!
@rickh37143 жыл бұрын
@@BeachesScalyBeasts Probably not that then. Relative darkness in different hues is tricky. I noticed when sunbathing my EBTs in mid summer on the deck ( with shade access) that the black slate is significantly hotter than the red brown slate so I use the latter. At other times the black slate gains more heat so before (e.g brumation), I might use that help them digest the last big meal for the season.

The only thing I could think of would be something in the compound itself or perhaps the polyurethane glue used to hold them all together, as it’s highly toxic and it does seep out. Only thing I could think of to get around this would be a solid period of airing the tanks out for a month. With a few cleans with vinegar after the airing out process has been completed. But my money would be the polyurethane glue. I hope this helps. And it’s awesome that you can admit that things to do wrong, the Australian reptile community on Facebook can be very toxic. I am only halfway through this and had to stop for a minute! My word!! You have had a crap time of it! Babies die, we know that, but it's hard and we want to know why. But sometimes we will never know why ( even human babies :( ) I moderate a group for corn snakes here, and people get neonates and they die and others start blaming breeders or pet stores and I tell them, the truth is most baby reptiles aren't meant to survive. They are meant to be food for other animals. I wish you had shared the common name of your geckos or put the scientific name on the screen. There are so many types of geckos, I keep crested geckos and don't add heat. They are kept at room temperature. I have never lost one, but they are cooler temp animals. They hide from heat. Every few days each one gets UVB and that adds heat, but it doesn't stay on for long and only during the day. I worry so much about over heating animals, they can't survive that like they can being too cool. My snakes only have added heat when they go up in feeding size for a few weeks or if for some reason their enclosures are not as warm as they usually are when I do a laser check. All but one of my snakes avoid all heat, I have a male that shoved all his substrate aside to be able to lay lengthways on the glass and has done so the last few days. I will be turning off his heat when we feed this next time (it's winter here). So even if you keep snakes or lizards that as a whole, in the wild, survive in certain temps it's important to understand their behavior in those temps. So it may get really hot but that doesn't mean they are out in it, they may burrow or go into water or some other retreat to where they might be twenty degrees less than the surface or air temps. I know you are probably aware of that, but I point that out to get to this, some individuals like it much cooler. Of my five snakes only one will tolerate added heat, as in go into it, but even she rarely does. Each one of my lizards and snakes have different personalities and preferences. It could be that, even though most everyone else keeps theirs at a higher temp than you, that they had inded over heated. I hear too many horror stories about bioactive enclosures and yours have made me absolutely sure that I will never go bioactive. There's too many things at play, too many uncontrollable factors. I know that there's dirt and soil in the wild, but that is substrate that they can get away from if needs be (if there's something going on). I know there's nothing in this video saying anything against bioactive, it's my take home from it. My animals have good sized enclosures, losts of enrichment and hides. They are all alive and healthy. I just hate to mess with that. I am so sorry for the FOREVER long comment.
