Umbris - Qwark's HQ Ratchet & Clank OST Music by David Bergeaud

I legit thought for years the creepy shouting in the song was “HEY! QWARK IS A SNAKE! HEY! QWARK IS A SNAKE!” Implying Qwark’s deception and treachery. But I realise now the lyrics are actually “WOAH! WE’RE GONNA GET THIS PLACE!” Which is a sound bite from KISS’s Alive tour in 1975 for their song Hotter than Hell!
@josiahcruz2610 Жыл бұрын
That’s really awesome actually. I always thought it was genius how this game would sample tracks from various pop/funk (and apparently rock!) genres and incorporate them as the basslines for their tracks.

What I love also is that David Bergeaud wasn't afraid to go dark or gritty with his musical tone and textures, and effectively portrayed the very real danger to Ratchet's life the obstacle course posed. I mean we can hear the street smarts of Ratchet in the jazzy riffs hiding amongst the Stravinsky-esque strings, as well as the frenetic action in the beautifully intricate drum line. The sing-songy intro melody lulls us into a false sense of security, almost as if we are falsely reassuring ourselves and saying, "Just one more step," but it's on an instrument that sounds like it has sharp edges (very metallic-y with uneven harmonics.) I always associated it with those spikey ball mines as a kid! Then we have that main minor-diminished Ratchet and Clank motif that is present throughout the soundtrack to encapsulate Ratchet and Clank's growing bond, friendship and teamwork. Robotic sounds are heard, representing Clank. Then the harsh reality of the surroundings kick in, and more orchestral sounds are heard. I freaking love the subtle modulation on the organ, it almost feels sinister and creeping, as if someone or something (Quark) is watching us. David effortlessly blends historic and modern musical instrumentation here, as is present throughout his work. That progression from intense orchestral tension and groove to the isolated vocal + percussion is so spot on with how blunt, candid and harsh it is, like it's jarringly unempathetic in a mouth agape kind of way, suitable for an uncaring obstacle course and the guy who runs it! Musical storytelling at its finest folks. David Bergeaud is genuinely a musical genius on par with Stravinsky, Holst, Debussy etc. ❤

Damn, you're talented at this. Would you mind pointing to the timestamp of this "Ratchet & Clank motif"? I know that at least two different musical cues are repeated throughout the OST, so I can't tell which one you refer to as the main motif

This is one of my favorite songs in the series. It does an excellent job creating tension and it makes you feel like you’re a badass agent, having to get past all the defenses of this massive fortress. Once inside, you’re betrayed and the song changes and becomes almost like a God of War track.

Yeah. Donald and Ratchet were very selfish and cruel to Sora and Clank initially. Abused, exploited, and blamed for minor mistakes, all because Sora wanted to find his friends/Clank wanted to find a hero to stop Drek. And the consequences of such cruelty ended with Riku teaming up with Maleficent/Gorda City being destroyed, something that could've been avoided easily if Donald/Ratchet were not blinded by their selfishness.
