Thank you for explaining the difference between toughness and hardness in stones. A lot of people equate hardness of stone with its toughness as well, but they are two different characteristics altogether.

Thx for this didn't even know I wanted to see this and as a full time student and mom we aren't gonna be able to afford any type of diamond. My partner has some disabilities so he's on a set income and it just covers bills. But that's why I'm working so hard in school so make sure we are good. I don't need to be rich but I don't wanna live month to month or can only get gifts for the kiddo. But I know all my hard work and time away from my family will pay off.

I have a uranium spinel engagement ring. They're rarer and more expensive, but spinel is tough enough for daily wear while glass is definitely a special occasion only material.

My weding ring is a light blue topaz with a halo of white sapphires. I've worn it daily for almost 9 years without any chipping, scratching, or breakage and I am by no means carful with it. Maybe its the cut of it? (It's a cusion cut) but it has been really hard wearing.

Tanzanite is my fav blue to purple stone... Its almost as hard a diamond, its a million times more rare...and buying one helps the Tanzanian people with jobs and revenue...unlike blood diamonds...

Talking about the cleavage/cleavage plains - can you actually... well, _see_ them? When you look at such a stone with a magnifying glass or something, can you see the lines along which the stone would break? Is that dictating how the stone will be cut?

Yes! You can see them, some minerals and certain stones will be more prominent and apparent than others. Diamonds have octahedral cleavage or 4 planes of weakness but other minerals have different numbers of planes-this can often be seen by the naked eye or microscope.

In the industry I see a lot of diamond halos on dress rings with softer stones. If you were hell bent on a softer stone and knew you would probably have to replace it in its life I would go for all the safer setting options, like rubover, low set, split shank, halo. A fitted wedding band that curved around to minimise under cutting. An ofc top notch maintenance like not wearing it to clean, in the gym, or to bed etc, as well as check ups and regular repairs. Theyre higher maintenance, but if you have the time and money ❤
