Dragonite's design is not bad as a stand-alone design. I would probably like it a lot more if it was part of a different line or a Pokemon that doesn't evolve. But going from a regal, sea serpent dragonair to derpy, Puff the Magic Dragonite always felt jarring to me.

Mewtwo is not an imperfect clone of Mew. That's an anime only thing. Mewtwo, in the games, is an upgrade of Mew. A bunch of scientists found a female Mew, it was a new Pokemon, it was pregnant, they genetically modified the baby before it was born, and thus, Mewtwo was created. It's not even a clone in the games. It's a fucked up Mew. One that was born naturally to a Mew, just modified to be stronger unnaturally. And stronger it was.

Sceptile's tree tail makes perfect sense actually, it's good for keeping itself balanced, especially when jumping across trees. Why do you think squirrels have such large tails? It's for the same reason. Plus, aside from the balance thing, it makes more sense for it to be able to use Leaf storm and there's always an argument to be made about camouflage too. Sceptile is just awesome in my opinion. Grovyle looks kinda cool but it also weak looking.

Nitro The difference between it and squirrels is the size. Something as large as sceptile shouldn't be able to be as agile as grovyle, it would work better as a ground dweller. It's still pretty cool though

Eh, I still disagree. Aside from the obvious strength advantage Sceptile has in its much larger thighs, Grovyle is always depicted as flat footed (much like a human). Sceptile has a leg shape more commonly associated with canines, felines, birds and dinosaurs, all animals known for having better speed and agility. I think it's reasonable to assume Sceptile's legs are also much better adapted for agility and speed than Grovyle's are.

Haha, I loved this episode, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. One thing that really stuck with me is that there are a fair number of pokemon that are not related but have very similar core designs. You pointed out several of them, e.g. Cubone/Charmander, but there were really quite a few if you look at the vague shapes. There's quite a few spherical bodies with faces that have arms/legs glued on like Geodude, Mankey, Jiggly/Clefairy. I wonder if many of these were created from early stages as different elemental versions of the same base, almost like they were their own "Evee-lutions" so to speak.

I slightly disagree with your fixation on "monster" in whether a Pokemon is on brand. I've always seen the ideal Pokemon design more like modestly fantastic "animals". Though, that stretches really thin in later gens, and "monster" can be more useful. Cinccino is still my 'quintessential Pokemon'.

Weirdly enough: •My Flareon nearly swept Sabrina's Gym in red and it was decently leveled for that gym. •After failed attempts and grinding, I can't afford any decent potions (and my bag has like no room for anything) so I'm stuck at the league unless I feel like massively over-leveling my Pokémon (which I don't because gen 1 Red is mediocre).

Charmander is a salamander Gorwlithe and Arcanine are based on Shisa statues which are like Lion dogs in Chinese folklore they are guardian spirits. Being only one year younger than Digi, I have also been around since Gen 1. However, I don't have any nostalgia for the games back then. My Gen 1/2 nostalgia is for the cards. When it comes to the games, Gen 3 is where all of my nostalgia is, as that was when I started having the games be responsible for some of the developments in my relationships with my friends.

Voltorb is not lazy. I honestly think it's really smart. It's literally the Pokemon version of a mimic. A mimic that also freaking explodes in your face. In the games you go around picking up items, and when you think you're getting a potion. BOOM! Voltorb. It also can be seen as a standard bomb/grenade, which I bet Surge used in the war.

Chancey was actually one of the strongest Gen One pokemons (and my personal favorite) from Gen One. Play on it's strenght, massive hp and good special attack. (ignore that's its a normal pokemon) make it learn ice beam and thunderbolt, keep minimize and softboiled (it's a dublicate attack of recover from abra/kadabra/alakazam/mewtwo) with the combination of the stall tactic from minimize and softboil with almost no weekneses (only fighting) together with the special attacks of ice and thunder you can pretty much hurt anything while tanking a shit ton of damage. (Chancey can easily take down 3 enemy pokemons before it goes down)

I actually like Diamond & Pearl the most, but that's mostly cause I like how they actually had a decent antagonist for the first time. (which was topped by black and white lateron) There's probably a little Nostalgia too, cause I started with platinum (yes, I started when I was like 13 years old already). Gameplaywise I think gen 2, 5 and 7 share the best until now, but pokemon-designwise I'd have to say gen 3, 4 and 6 are my favorites

They didnt fuck up Butterfree's design May. They switched the sprites of the final evolution of caterpie from venomoth to Buterfree because of the anime. Ash was got caterpie which would evolve into Venomoth but because Venomoths design was scary and intimidating they did a last minute switch to let Ash eventually get a Butterfree. And I'm glad they did because its soo fucking cute
