My advice to my students. Create 3 targets. One in your "weight class" that your competitive with (the Rival), One just outside your "weight class" that your strive to study from (the Mentor), One so far out of your weight class they are on the horizon that is your ultimate goal to equal (The Master). When you beat your Rival, find a new rival. When you have gotten all you can from your mentor, Get a new mentor. When your equal with your master, Find a new master. Revisit your old work and try to redo it. You'd be surprised sometimes you've progressed so much and sometimes you might have regressed. Don't take the regression as a bad sign it could just mean you learned something fundamental the old you didn't know. Fundamentals are not baby stuff they are the beginnings of every difficult work. even the greatest of masters needs to fall back onto them for difficult shots. So at the start you should expect to use your fundamentals all the time. The eraser is as much a marking tool as your pencil. What information you chose to take away changes your work just as much as what you add. Artistic rules are meant to be broken but only when one understands why such rules exist in the first place.

@NameIsDoc2 жыл бұрын
@@hayleyhavener5977 It helps me figure out their state of mind as well. as sometimes we have confident kids that grab something bigger then themselves but sometimes you have the kid that isn't confident that choses a rival that is below them. What I adore about him is when he fixes the art submissions, he maintains that artist's style. I could still tell who the artist was. He's offering advice that works for everyone, but still tailors the demonstration to the subject.

You're right fixing someone drawing and judging it from your point of view/options/art style, it's sign of disrespect to the artist, and find a style more "similar" to the artist style is an act of respect for his work, when trying to "fix" his/hers mistakes.. No one has your art style, and you can't expect others to have it, and teach people to reproduce your style is kind of nuts, because either it will take a lot of time or the difference in options will separate/bring suffering to you and the "disciple"(even if he's blind to notice and wants to learn your style really driven), and you don't want that. I think choosing to show a style similar to his/her, or what to reach out for your "apprentice" it's the smart move, that way you know for sure he/she will add influences later that will correctly make him/her progress, and be confident/trust, focused in their own style. Thanks for actually teach this way, good sir! 👏 😁

I just got to the part where it said "Just draw with your eyes..." and although this could go in a number of directions, it might be referring how you take note of different qualities of that object or what ever you're drawing and focus on implementing them one step at a time. The problem is that even with this more specific interpretation is that it is very general and you need to ask about specifics depending on what the focus of the art is.

Really the best part advice I told myself was to stop comparing against other artists in terms of their technique. I used to get extremely bummed out because I couldn't draw clean, straight, and controlled lines. Needless to say it's dumb in hindsight as I have congenital defects in my hand only exacerbated by injuries so my motor functions are crap, but that's at least one great aspect about converting to digital art. With digital art I can retain my characteristic roughness but it doesn't look like it's just graphite spaghetti on the paper. However, I do think it's great to see how other artists do art! I would watch a whole bunch of "How to Drawing" videos, mostly just to nitpick how skilled artists did their work. Also it got me to learning and studying anatomy so it's more than worthwhile.

When people say “Don’t compare yourself to other artists” they don’t mean “don’t use references or look at other artists work to help you improve” it means don’t base your value on the work of others. Also, this trend of photoshopping other’s obviously stylized art to look like an artist *you like* is madness. It’s such a bad example. I don’t care if the original artist offered it up. You’re absolutely not the only artist doing this either. Should we go photoshop some Egon Shiele or Margaret Keene? I’m being facetious but honestly, this always feels so…gimmicky and not particularly advantageous to artists looking to improve. But I don’t have an internet channel, so what do I know.

I remember my ex seeing concept art I did for Sony Imageworks and being amazed and saying "I had no idea you knew how to make art like this". That's because I literally was drawing every day like I was told to, but I wasn't thinking about anything-, I wasn't trying to convey anything visually and I wasn't challenging myself so all my recent work looked crappy and the same: stiff, boring, lifeless, easy-peasy bad habit forming drivel.
@bruchett47992 жыл бұрын
But then compare the first drawing on the left.The mans jaw is really U shaped. You can argue it looks very cartoon like. What is the style the artists is trying to convey? Was it done on purpose? The main point of not comparing is that a lot of artists critique themselves so hard that they quit. Analyzing and studying other works would be the best choice. Then applying it to your own. I do get the main idea of the video and I have seen really bad art tips from mediocre “professionals”. Many art teachers are bad at explaining when they say use your “eyes” they are not telling us what to observe and the reasoning behind certain elements and principles of art/design. A lot of art is done by doing and not thinking. So we get a lot of sink or swim and perceptions that you can only draw if you are gifted rather than being a skill that is taught.
@royalfrost1 Жыл бұрын
I feel like people give the 'don't compare yourself to other artists' advice to stop people who struggle with self-doubt from beating themselves up over how big the gap is between them and their goal, but it's actually counter-productive considering beginners are meant to suck and the only way to improve is by learning what and what not to do from other people.
