Ration Review: 2017 Chinese PLA Type 13 Menu 1 ~ Fried Rice

This is a Chinese Type 13 Self-Heating Ration. It's menu No. 1 and was produced in 2017 (probably the freshest ration I've ever laid my hands on!). The interesting thing about these Type 13s is that they don't have a lot of different components. They basically have two large (250 g) main entrees along with a little pouch of pickled vegetable and a drink powder. The mains in this one are Meat and Vegetable Fried Rice and Soy Sauce Fried Rice. To be honest, for the american MREs I would rather have a larger main entree and less snacks.

I really like the foam insert on the ration heaters and the Type 09's are more in line with the MRE based ration with the main, side, fruit/veg and a desert. In fact I just ordered two from my friend Xia. Also I noticed the difference with the heating elements, they used to be one large square looks like they are now using a sectioned out version that will provide better consistent heating to the entire retort pouch. Good stuff!!

As a Chinese I can tell you that most of the PLAs prefer to have instant noodles(some PLA veterans told me that). Not licking America or Europe, but the portion of meat and vegetables in a meal of an American/European ration is higher than that of a PLA ration(mostly rice), which is more nutritionally balanced. Not about components, just entrees.

Glad to see you back sir. I will divert from this review, just for A second. The U.S. MRE you had for comparison, creamy spinach fettuccine, what year, never saw that one, Apologies. Back to review, LOL. These menus, do not have A lot of components, but are calorie and protein rich. The other reviews I have seen on these, I do not remember two heater packs, maybe something new? Agreed , U.S. rations could learn from this! Love the translations, LOL. The texture of the rice in these meals , always seems perfect. Awesome friend, Peace, John, Magnum.

I' was surprised when they sent me one of these how good it actually was, I had another ration with pickled turnip and it was pretty tough to eat.

Those FRH's! haha, recommend menu 3 as its the only one that has a rice main and a noodle main, which I think makes more sense than 2 rice dishes. Thanks for showing. ATB

Great review as always I do love the foreign ones. LOL see the body bags. LOVE it. And they give you a kids spoon, just in case you lost your chopsticks. LOL love google translate. Terrier meters in the fried rice? what does that taste like? Pig stew juan dream people? Old Plumbing ROFLOL But hey it has wine in it. The rice looks like it might be a sticky rice and that is why it is so gelatinous. Thanks for the great review again.

Thanks for the review ! I had menu 2 from this type. I expected something really full of flavors or spicy, but it was similar to your ration. At least I had soy sauce based sauce for making the taste more interesting.

Great review. Very happy and enjoyed seeing you review an international ration. Very good. Rice doesn't looked fried in the western sense of fried rice. Looks really bland. Looks like you could use some red pepper or something w this entree. The second entree looks better but still looks like they need something to spice it up. Well you answered my question. Thanks

Type 13 MRE was developed to contain 2 main courses because PLA front line troop involved in some of the recent major Chinese earthquake rescue missions complained that the MREs handed out was not really fulfilling after a full day of intense manual labor. So the decision was to put emphasis on providing more fulfilling food rather than serving a variety of tastes.

well....you are try using just 1 heater cut into 2 and put half on each side. That way you can have another one for future use. The 2017 version seems more low quality, i was heating my 2015 version as i was watching this and the bag used for the 2015 ones seems better. Your so call side is actually a appetizer. And this i believe is suppose to be their 24 hrs MRE that is why there is 2 mains. And drink wise is actually a mix of malt extract, citric acid and flavouring. I have really try it yet. If you want more things in the MRE you need to try the 09 (green bag) version that comes with a dessert/snack.

I found my trays at the Brimfield Flea Market about 15 years ago or so. This guy had a bunch of oddball stuff including a big stack of those trays. It didn't even occur to me that they were left-handed (which is perfect for me, as I'm left-handed) until much later. I wonder if he just happened to get hold of some big closeout on left-handed trays that the company made but nobody was interested in... No idea, but interesting to think about.

Almost every PLA company has its own cooking squad that operates mobile kitchens and delivers hot meals to the front line. As I know from friends in PLA, those rations are solely meant for emergency/survival occations, where an additional entree makes much more sense than a bunch of snacks and candies.

That's about as likely as finding a US issued MRE that says "Lobster Mac & Cheese" Dog meat is served in China, but it's like consuming horse meat in the USA. The animal is required to be raised as livestock (ie. specifically raised for human consumption), and anyone wanting to eat it is going to pay a premium for the privilege.

I heard about that scandal. The issue wasn't that they were selling horse meat. The issues at hand were improper food labeling and that the meat wasn't properly sourced and inspected. If it had been labelled as horse meat AND it had been sourced from livestock that had been inspected by government inspectors, there wouldn't have been a problem. Of course, properly sourced and inspected horse meat is fairly expensive in Europe. Obviously it isn't popular in the UK, but it is a traditional food item in parts of Italy, Greece, and Poland. (not sure what other countries).
